I guess it is time for my annual post to complain about our tax dollars funding Fleet Week, esp 10 years after the fact that for hundreds of minutes, our air military defense was impotent against known hijacked planes aimed at the USA's biggest city and also the headquarters of USA military operations.
Less military entertainment and more military defense.

This is part of their 'advertising budget'. I find it stressful and if I do, imagine what the City's pets and wild animals/birds feel about it. Suits them for not voting, though, right.

Every time I've been before I stayed in a hotel near Union Square/Tenderloin - kind of want to stay in a different part this year if I go for a week or so in May. Going to use Airbnb this time - thinking maybe Outer Sunset? I've really not explored any of that side of SF. Sounds like half an hour to downtown via bus, is there enough to do in the neighborhood as far as bars and restaurants at the end of the day?
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 9 January 2012 02:23 (twelve years ago) link
nope
― iatee, Monday, 9 January 2012 02:23 (twelve years ago) link
it's pretty foggy and residential. sf is small enough that it maybe doesn't matter thaaat much where you're staying but I def wouldn't recommend outer sunset if you have a choice.

Friend of mine stayed way out there for some reason when she visited and somehow it took her like 3 hours to get somewhere in town on buses. She changed hotels after one night. Don't do it! I'd stay in Mission or even Noe Valley or something if you want to get a little away from downtown.
― kinder, Monday, 9 January 2012 02:53 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah a half hour to downtown sounds really optimistic. When visiting SF you still wanna put yourself in the NE quadrant of the city or you'll have a tough time getting places. Maybe try the Castro, Lower/Upper Haight, Nob Hill, etc? Some friends of mine have often had good luck with airbnb type places in the Castro fwiw.

Metro Hotel on Divisadero has been mentioned on here I think a few times and is pretty close to Haight/Castro etc.
― svend, Monday, 9 January 2012 03:07 (twelve years ago) link
That was the best thing about the Hotel Carlton when I stayed there - area was sketchier than expected (wouldn't have worried me but I was with alcoholic then-girlfriend), but it took no time at all to get to the bus lines on Van Ness.
I'll check those areas. North Beach via airbnb a good option? I've seen most of the attractions now, I'm basically just aiming for a Giants game, new SFMOMA and De Young plus days of wandering.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 9 January 2012 03:27 (twelve years ago) link
We used to hit Beck's Motor Inn in the Castro a lot, the price has gone up a lot though... but it was always good to get to most parts of SF, close to BART, buses etc.
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 9 January 2012 03:31 (twelve years ago) link
north beach is still less central than other options might be but it's a nice place to be for a week

― sarahell, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link
I've only read the Chron articles but it seems like some combination of the two. There *were* incidents between him and his wife (there's video and photos iirc, provided by the neighbor) but the wife ended up not wanting to prosecute or follow up, so Mirkarimi's political opponents have stepped in to exploit the situation. it's just ugly all around.

yeah I mean, if this guy weren't a progressive, people would be foaming at the mouth to have him fired.
as far as I've read, situation happened, wife felt bad enough about it to go to the neighbor and have her make a tear-filled video about the abuse, claimed it has happened before. neighbor takes video to the cops. wife then says no it wasn't a big deal. so either it wasn't and she is a huge drama queen (possible, she is a mexican soap opera actress) or it was and now she's just been convinced by him to cover it up. The other speculation was that she was planning on holding the video to use against him later in some kind of custody dust up. Anyway I don't think he should probably be the sheriff with all of this going on.

I've met Ross and he's always seemed decent enough for a pol but in a city as progressive as SF, stifling a pretty credible account of domestic violence is a non-starter. I hope he gets his day in court and I wish he were innocent. Call me prejudiced ('tis fair) but I look at all this w/an eye jaundiced as well by the fact that his wife is a foreigner who was allegedly told by him that he had powerful friends (insinuating that she did not) and it wouldn't behove her to mess w/him, presumably in some context regarding custody of their son. Even if she were a manipulative intrigante, he may have made the dick move of falling into her trap. I feel most shitty of all for their son.
