sturridge/wellbeck is a good and true point

at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Monday, 10 October 2011 01:37 (twelve years ago) link

Have now caught up on most recent round of intl matches and Spain, Italy, France all looked v impressive, assume Germany was too, think England should just take an U21 squad for the experience.

boxall, Monday, 10 October 2011 01:41 (twelve years ago) link

u-27, maybe

at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Monday, 10 October 2011 01:47 (twelve years ago) link

No other England forward is anywhere near as good as Rooney, but that one person who voted for him over Aguero is the most digusting savage in the world.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 October 2011 10:01 (twelve years ago) link

good concise summation imo

at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Monday, 10 October 2011 10:11 (twelve years ago) link

rooney's whiteness i think i don't let affect my judgement, i don't say i don't know it's there cos it's always there obviously, but i try to make a clear judgement on him as if he weren't white, iykwim?

― at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Monday, 10 October 2011 02:06 (17 hours ago)

^^^^^^

nakhchivan, Monday, 10 October 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry but I have no idea what that even means.

- You signal he's white
- You don't want that to affect your judgement
- Yet you are aware that he is white
- But you try to make a clear judgement "as if he weren't white"?

???

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 10 October 2011 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

deems is basically saying that when we discuss rooney's popular soubriquet 'the white pele', we refer largely to the pele element -- how does rooney relate to pele, his mythos, his technical ability, how does rooney improve upon his prototype?

however, what is missed is exactly the meaning of rooney's whiteness -- why he is white? did he become white? does his whiteness derive from or merely perpetuate the tabloid rooccult?

nakhchivan, Monday, 10 October 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

ya

at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Monday, 10 October 2011 19:32 (twelve years ago) link

but without making it 'a thing' y'know

at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Monday, 10 October 2011 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think the tabloids made him white.

I'll back off now, I'm afraid all this is too meta for me.

06/07 through 10/11, Rooney was ___ in league goals and ___ in assists.

I guessed 2nd and 6th before looking it up, wrong on both.

boxall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:03 (twelve years ago) link

He's well up there in terms of assists. 2nd behind Fabregas maybe?

Number None, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:12 (twelve years ago) link

1st in league goals.

Fabregas, Lampard, maybe Gerrard ahead of him in assists
(with usual query re how assists are defined & counted)

parasitical brain-weevil (onimo), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

No wait Cronaldo would have been banging them in for half of that. I'll go for 2nd and 4th.

pretty sure darren bent is the answer to every question about epl scoring recorde

nakhchivan, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:20 (twelve years ago) link

for english players

I dunno, tho- purely on stats rooney looks pretty good. Thirty tapins from ronaldo runs/deflections doesn't hurt, being the focal point of united's attack doesn't hurt, y'know? Keane/berbatov got 20+ each one season without a midfield behind them, just sayin

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

clearly you haven't been paying attention to Utd's midfield in recent years

Number None, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

young may be up there for assists but it wouldn't surprise me to see rooney one and one tbh, these are the effects of unwarranted pandering

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

You have to wonder what Rooney has on Ferguson though, when he could get the same return from Bent or Zamora

Number None, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

utd's midfield? I'd be the biggest critic of it on ilx tbh, but if you had to describe it you could use 'inexorable' or, indeed 'unstoppable like a sneeze rather than a boulder'

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

maybe hes just a nice person to have around carrington, offsetting the negative juju impact of darron gibson loitering about stomping pigeons and being surly

nakhchivan, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

It was 1st and 3rd actually - Fabregas and Young ahead in assists.

boxall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

take cron assists to rooney and rooney assists to cron out of those tallies i'd say he'd struggle fatly to make top ten in either

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:55 (twelve years ago) link

lol @ 'same' return from d bent, if a man u team including cron was bent wholly on getting our benty to the top of the asian market then he'd get fifty a season and he wouldn't need to fuck any magic grannies to do it

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think you "get" Ronaldo

Number None, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not sure I do either, but I'd like to.

boxall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

Rooney is 1st for goals and 1st for assists, is my guess.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:40 (twelve years ago) link

Assuming we're talking Prem only I've got Rooney > Drogba > Bent > Lampard > Ronaldo

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

Hah, I didn't see Boxall's post. Only semi-misplaced faith.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

rooney- pandered to, top team throughout, also hateful, disloyal & fat
Drogba- injured, shunted around, noble
Bent- unplayed, unloved, underrated, unlucky. Midtable teams supplying him
Lampard- a fucking midfielder, somewhat pandered to, constant in top team, somewhat hateful, corpulent
Ronaldo- hasn't been around for a while, constant in top four before that, somewhat hateful, not fat, a fucking midfielder, somewhat pandered to?

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

real life lols at drogba being categorized as noble.

i would seriously pay money for a dmac rothman's guide to prem footballers presented in such a fashion tbh.
Bent- unplayed, unloved, underrated, unlucky amazing.

pandemic, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:55 (twelve years ago) link

Rooney 75
Bent, Drogba 73
Tevez 69
Berbatov 68
Ronaldo, Torres 66
Lampard 65

obv Ronaldo had the best goals/season. Torres prob would've been top as well if he'd come over a season earlier.

boxall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

not totally sure it applies to Drogba but injured, shunted around, noble could absolutely describe some if not most of my fave all-time players

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:46 (twelve years ago) link

I think the lack of consistent 15-20 goal scorers is interesting ... Rooney's 75 goals would put him behind Messi, Villa, Forlan and Kanoute in Spain, Di Natale and Totti in Italy, Gomez in the Bundesliga. Injuries probably a factor - maybe Prem managers also more likely to bench apparently out-of-form strikers?

Aguero is only one goal behind Rooney despite being 18 in 2006.

Cristiano scored the exact same number of goals 09-11 in Spain as 06-09 in England.

My office is very slow today.

Rooney has held the one ring of english footballing hope for too long, his lungs foam with a yellow cud and his eyes peer out wizenedly from cronish (no not that way) sockets. Gerrard and j cole (oddly) have dwindled in thrall and wilshere is not long for this darkling world.
