in any even these were pretty okay I guess, i really liked 2 chaaaainz, he had a good mix of dopey NY punchlines ("my credit card is black and proud" !!) and laid back southern swagger. and the MMG one was pretty good, if only for meek mill shouting out gunplay
slaughterhouse one was obv the worse for having the worst smug rappers.

ross is one of the best rappers out right now and he can actually get an album out w/ no bullshit, which puts him in the class of like... five rappers

― Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:45 (twelve years ago) link
to answer shakey's question: I mean it in both of those ways (tho i would also classify "9 piece" as bullshit, but in a different way)
As for rapper qua rapper... whatever, I don't particularly feel like splitting hairs in that way atm. Best "rap artist" it w/e is fine with me. Altho plenty of ppl including myself have memorized rick ross verses. He's become a better rapper AND a better artist... rhyming iPhone and cell phone aside, he's not really still the guy from "hustlin". But we've been over this.
I bet "ross is cool" vs "ross is not cool" would split almost directly along "listens to the radio" and "doesn't listen to the radio", ship aside
― yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:46 (twelve years ago) link
i kinda like ross at times but he is still hella easy to make fun of.

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:45 (twelve years ago) link
My point is there is a machine in place via labels/mags/blogs that says 364 days a year people want shitty pop rap; and then once a year there's this REALLY POPULAR FEATURE on the BET Awards that is literally the only thing anyone knows about the BET awards where everyone acts like backpacker nerdballs and this is supposedly really novel and interesting and thrilling. And it's like, if people like this--WHICH THEY CLEARLY DO--why don't we reward people for rapping all year instead of like drowning everything in dipshitty Alex Da Kid Glee rap and Bruno hooks and hashtags
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:50 (twelve years ago) link
that's like saying "i see so many people excited on the internet about arcade fire playing on snl, why don't they sell more records than nickelback? it's a conspiracy man"
― some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:51 (twelve years ago) link

the charts have been democratized -- the machinery may want LMFAO to dominate the airwaves but the fact of the matter is people are going to iTunes and buying that shit in droves, afaik there's no way to fake that
― some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:53 (twelve years ago) link
like if you actually want people to poke holes in your incoherent swiss cheese 'argument' then post it here, if you just want people to agree and say yeah you're totally right man then uh go join all the other people on twitter who think skillz should be on bet every day
― some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:54 (twelve years ago) link
If you can't see that entertainment industry understanding the appeal of """indie culture""" like Arcade Fire is why we have shit like Juno and Two Broke Girls and Dude Where's My Pants, then you are are even more clueless than your fake avuncular act makes you appear to be on ILX
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:55 (twelve years ago) link

maybe the shaky analogy i'm looking for is people freaking out about prince's "while my guitar gently weeps" solo when it's been how many years since a top 10 hit even had a guitar solo -- i mean excitement displays of virtuosity probably gets even stronger when that particular type of skill falls out of favor in popular music
― some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 04:06 (twelve years ago) link

i think that's a good analogy, and just like these freestyles, no one really thinks it would work on the radio. not that people don't want to hear a great verse or a great guitar solo within the context of a hit, but pointed chops showcases like these makes for better internet videos than pop music.
