Hah, I didn't see Boxall's post. Only semi-misplaced faith.

rooney- pandered to, top team throughout, also hateful, disloyal & fat
Drogba- injured, shunted around, noble
Bent- unplayed, unloved, underrated, unlucky. Midtable teams supplying him
Lampard- a fucking midfielder, somewhat pandered to, constant in top team, somewhat hateful, corpulent
Ronaldo- hasn't been around for a while, constant in top four before that, somewhat hateful, not fat, a fucking midfielder, somewhat pandered to?

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

real life lols at drogba being categorized as noble.

i would seriously pay money for a dmac rothman's guide to prem footballers presented in such a fashion tbh.
Bent- unplayed, unloved, underrated, unlucky amazing.

pandemic, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:55 (twelve years ago) link

Rooney 75
Bent, Drogba 73
Tevez 69
Berbatov 68
Ronaldo, Torres 66
Lampard 65

obv Ronaldo had the best goals/season. Torres prob would've been top as well if he'd come over a season earlier.

boxall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

not totally sure it applies to Drogba but injured, shunted around, noble could absolutely describe some if not most of my fave all-time players

can't decide if a 4.4bn budget adjustment in december will leave me with less time for this stuff or leave me fulltime at this stuff, otherwise i'd be tempted tbph

I think the lack of consistent 15-20 goal scorers is interesting ... Rooney's 75 goals would put him behind Messi, Villa, Forlan and Kanoute in Spain, Di Natale and Totti in Italy, Gomez in the Bundesliga. Injuries probably a factor - maybe Prem managers also more likely to bench apparently out-of-form strikers?

Aguero is only one goal behind Rooney despite being 18 in 2006.

Cristiano scored the exact same number of goals 09-11 in Spain as 06-09 in England.

My office is very slow today.

boxall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

playing for a much better attacking team in spain tbf

Also englishes defenders allowed kick fuck out of more skillful players innit

A list of all 100/5 scorers would be interesting. Hasselbaink had 104 from '97 to '02 despite changing clubs twice.

boxall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

yeah 100/5 club poll imo

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

There can't be very many. Loads of guys like Viduka or Heskey get there through longevity. Shearer, Andy Cole, Henry are my guesses. Fowler might've got there in four.

Overestimated Fowler - 94 in 5.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

not exhaustive but

Shearer 92-97 137
C Ronaldo 06-11 132
Henry 01-06 130
Messi 06-11 112
Villa 05-10 108
Eto'o 04-09 107
Hasselbaink 97-02 104
Forlan 04-09 102

Van Nistelrooy's injury came in the very middle of all those 20+ seasons so he missed out.

league only, Kluivert OUT

boxall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

also no second-tier leagues, I guess Makaay's OK despite one of those seasons at Bayern

boxall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

Luca Toni (04-09) in, Batistuta, Rivaldo and Ronaldo out: not the best way to assess goalscorers.

shite pele (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

Di Natale needs twelve this season to do it (he already has four). I can't find Signori's career stats but he was capocannoniere in 93, 94 and 96; he must have done it.

two months pass...

Messi was on the ground after being fouled by José Callejón when Pepe appeared to deliberately tread on the left hand of the world player of the year. The referee booked Callejón but took no action against Pepe, who was on a yellow card.

The Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who had been following the match on television, tweeted: "Pepe. What an idiot."

That drew a response from the retired former Real Madrid player Guti, who wrote: "I laugh at Rooney. There are plenty of saints – in heaven. If he wants to be a saint, he should set an example. Making mistakes is human."

Why does Agüero have a ü in his name, is it some sort of Motörhead thang?

U-diaeresis

Several languages use diaeresis over the letter U to show that the letter is pronounced in its regular way, without dropping out, building diphthongs with neighbours etc.

In Spanish it is used to distinguish between "gue"/"güe" and "gui"/"güi": antigüedad (antiquity), pingüino (penguin). This is also the case for the Nicaraguan demonym, Nicaragüense. Similarly in Catalan language,

"gue~güe" are [ɡe]~[ɡwe],
"gui~güi" are [ɡi]~[ɡwi],
"que~qüe" [ke]~[kwe],
"qui~qüi" [ki]~[kwi],

as in aigües, pingüins, qüestió, adeqüi. Also ü is used to mark that vowel pairs that normally would form a diphthong must be pronounced as separate syllables, examples: Raül, diürn.
