dude has some charisma too

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

was also impressed w/ kendrick, and eminem is still just an incredible force. when you see stuff like that you understand why everyone falls over themselves to call him one of the all-time greatest

did not enjoy yelawolf, per usual

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

what was Eminem even talking about

Big KRIT's verse was very dope

lol yeah Busta was good but I was like "wait this is way longer than everyone else's"

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

Busta looks 60 and 300 pounds. Em looks dead and 100 pounds.

in any even these were pretty okay I guess, i really liked 2 chaaaainz, he had a good mix of dopey NY punchlines ("my credit card is black and proud" !!) and laid back southern swagger. and the MMG one was pretty good, if only for meek mill shouting out gunplay

slaughterhouse one was obv the worse for having the worst smug rappers.

busta needs to give it a rest -- sitcom dad OTM

oh hi dere thread police as i've heard the other ones (they were usually just posted in the rolling threads), am i allowed to also enjoy this years ones or do i have to be jaded by it all too?

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

they really missed the boat on not giving riff raff his own 6 min block -- the only true freestyler in the game

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:32 (twelve years ago) link

meek mill was def the best in the maybach music cipher. pill was typically lame

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:32 (twelve years ago) link

well ross was the best but obv that goes w/o saying

meek mill was good... but it's not exactly the best venue for his raps

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

stalley's verse was cool

and whoever Lacrae is, I liked his verse iirc

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

blind guy lol

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

i dont think ross was the best at all!

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

^^^

don't know why anyone gives Rick Ross the time of day, personally. can't stand the dude.

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

hes an ok rapper but he releases great songs. 'im a boss' will be in my top ten this year, shit sounds so good when it comes on the radio. its like a jolt of caffein

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

caffeine

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

ross is one of the best rappers out right now and he can actually get an album out w/ no bullshit, which puts him in the class of like... five rappers

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

he can actually get an album out w/ no bullshit

not sure what you mean here

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

do you mean an album that doesn't have any bullshit on it, or an album that is not subject to the usual major label shenanigans

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

'one of the best rappers out right now' -- cmon dude. one of the best rap artists maybe, but no one is memorizing ross verses

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

i mean, i dont think he's a bad rapper or anything, hes just a competent one

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

overall, competent is a good word, i think he makes the most of his talents and has good taste in expensive beats

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

also he has big titties

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

i remembered one

eeryday im hustlin
hustlin
hustlin
eeryday im hustlin
something about noriega
he owes me money honest
hustlin
im not a cop srs

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

i think he makes the most of his talents and has good taste in expensive beats

this seems about right to me - most of the time when I hear his stuff my overall reaction "wow this sounds expensive"

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

lol a hoy hoy

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

i mean im happy ross exists -- hes made pop rap good again -- no way would i say hes one of the best rapper-qua-rappers out right now tho

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

nah I agree with jordan he is one of the best rappers out right now

paints awesome imagery w/ his verses.

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:44 (twelve years ago) link

but no one is memorizing ross verses

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ygruvz2jVY

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:45 (twelve years ago) link

to answer shakey's question: I mean it in both of those ways (tho i would also classify "9 piece" as bullshit, but in a different way)

As for rapper qua rapper... whatever, I don't particularly feel like splitting hairs in that way atm. Best "rap artist" it w/e is fine with me. Altho plenty of ppl including myself have memorized rick ross verses. He's become a better rapper AND a better artist... rhyming iPhone and cell phone aside, he's not really still the guy from "hustlin". But we've been over this.

I bet "ross is cool" vs "ross is not cool" would split almost directly along "listens to the radio" and "doesn't listen to the radio", ship aside

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:46 (twelve years ago) link

i kinda like ross at times but he is still hella easy to make fun of.

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah he's not switching flows up or killingthe internal rhyme game, but dude found his voice for imagery

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

He's become a better rapper AND a better artist

do you think he uses a lot of ghost writers? i always kind of assumed he did

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

i really doubt ross has a ghost writer

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:48 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know... nozzle (leaving this autocorrect) made the point years ago about soulja boy but it IS possible to just improve as a rapper. The knee jerk assumption of rap fans to be all GHOSTWRITER!!!! when a dude gets better is weird and dispiriting. We all get better (or hope to) at creative pursuits over time, I don't think ross (or lil wayne) is exempt from that.

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

i could totally see ross having a ghostwriter. or several. not that i think this takes away from how good his songs are

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

i obvs don't get to listen to rap radio much but when i was in miami (duhh) and california earlier this year rick ross joints sound dope yeah

i didn't hear any of the MMG stuff tho (which is dope) but 'aston martin music' is such a radio banger.

racks on top of racks on top of rack on racks on racks (tpp), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

i guess it was always my impression that ghostwriting was way more common than people think, even with rappers that you wouldn't expect to use them

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:30 (twelve years ago) link

i wonder how far it goes back? i know big daddy kane ghostwrote, he was the first person i really heard it about...until like jay-z and mad skillz made a big deal abt it

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

I think "Aston Martin Music" is the only Rick Ross song I've heard on the radio here. :/

the old story is that they actually stole grandmaster caz's rhyme book right? though that sounds a little to cute/possibly apocraphyl

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

maybe the shaky analogy i'm looking for is people freaking out about prince's "while my guitar gently weeps" solo when it's been how many years since a top 10 hit even had a guitar solo -- i mean excitement displays of virtuosity probably gets even stronger when that particular type of skill falls out of favor in popular music

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 04:06 (twelve years ago) link

btw did you see the 'drum solo week' on letterman over the summer? shit was pretty wild, just the concept alone. also copeland went ham.

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 04:08 (twelve years ago) link

Eminem starting with the fake 90s backpack battle rap is fucking hilarious

i think that's a good analogy, and just like these freestyles, no one really thinks it would work on the radio. not that people don't want to hear a great verse or a great guitar solo within the context of a hit, but pointed chops showcases like these makes for better internet videos than pop music.
