don't know why anyone gives Rick Ross the time of day, personally. can't stand the dude.

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

hes an ok rapper but he releases great songs. 'im a boss' will be in my top ten this year, shit sounds so good when it comes on the radio. its like a jolt of caffein

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

caffeine

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

ross is one of the best rappers out right now and he can actually get an album out w/ no bullshit, which puts him in the class of like... five rappers

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

he can actually get an album out w/ no bullshit

not sure what you mean here

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

do you mean an album that doesn't have any bullshit on it, or an album that is not subject to the usual major label shenanigans

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

'one of the best rappers out right now' -- cmon dude. one of the best rap artists maybe, but no one is memorizing ross verses

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

i mean, i dont think he's a bad rapper or anything, hes just a competent one

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

overall, competent is a good word, i think he makes the most of his talents and has good taste in expensive beats

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

also he has big titties

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

i remembered one

eeryday im hustlin
hustlin

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

i think he makes the most of his talents and has good taste in expensive beats

this seems about right to me - most of the time when I hear his stuff my overall reaction "wow this sounds expensive"

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

lol a hoy hoy

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

i mean im happy ross exists -- hes made pop rap good again -- no way would i say hes one of the best rapper-qua-rappers out right now tho

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

nah I agree with jordan he is one of the best rappers out right now

paints awesome imagery w/ his verses.

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:44 (twelve years ago) link

but no one is memorizing ross verses

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:45 (twelve years ago) link

to answer shakey's question: I mean it in both of those ways (tho i would also classify "9 piece" as bullshit, but in a different way)

As for rapper qua rapper... whatever, I don't particularly feel like splitting hairs in that way atm. Best "rap artist" it w/e is fine with me. Altho plenty of ppl including myself have memorized rick ross verses. He's become a better rapper AND a better artist... rhyming iPhone and cell phone aside, he's not really still the guy from "hustlin". But we've been over this.

I bet "ross is cool" vs "ross is not cool" would split almost directly along "listens to the radio" and "doesn't listen to the radio", ship aside

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:46 (twelve years ago) link

i kinda like ross at times but he is still hella easy to make fun of.

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah he's not switching flows up or killingthe internal rhyme game, but dude found his voice for imagery

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

He's become a better rapper AND a better artist

do you think he uses a lot of ghost writers? i always kind of assumed he did

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

i really doubt ross has a ghost writer

Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:48 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know... nozzle (leaving this autocorrect) made the point years ago about soulja boy but it IS possible to just improve as a rapper. The knee jerk assumption of rap fans to be all GHOSTWRITER!!!! when a dude gets better is weird and dispiriting. We all get better (or hope to) at creative pursuits over time, I don't think ross (or lil wayne) is exempt from that.

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

i could totally see ross having a ghostwriter. or several. not that i think this takes away from how good his songs are

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

i obvs don't get to listen to rap radio much but when i was in miami (duhh) and california earlier this year rick ross joints sound dope yeah

i didn't hear any of the MMG stuff tho (which is dope) but 'aston martin music' is such a radio banger.

racks on top of racks on top of rack on racks on racks (tpp), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

i guess it was always my impression that ghostwriting was way more common than people think, even with rappers that you wouldn't expect to use them

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:30 (twelve years ago) link

i wonder how far it goes back? i know big daddy kane ghostwrote, he was the first person i really heard it about...until like jay-z and mad skillz made a big deal abt it

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

I think "Aston Martin Music" is the only Rick Ross song I've heard on the radio here. :/

turfin' bird (The Reverend), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

i wonder how far it goes back?

do you consider Rapper's Delight ghostwritten or just biting

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

rap stations in chicago move in blocks like -- lil wayne, ross/mmg, drake, waka

the old story is that they actually stole grandmaster caz's rhyme book right? though that sounds a little to cute/possibly apocraphyl

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

no way ross has a ghostwriter, because every single verse has the same rick ross flow

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 00:32 (twelve years ago) link

I dont understand the disconnect that everyone wants Ibiza bloodfart Bruno Mars rap 364 days of the year and then Twitter reliably jizzes their pants on the one day a year when BET lets Chris Brown act like Anticon guys going to Skribblejam.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 00:55 (twelve years ago) link

twitter users and radio listeners are both large groups of people that are not necessarily many of the same people, for one

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 01:04 (twelve years ago) link

also who is this 'everyone' you talk of whiney? because fuck off if i understand any of what you just strawmanned.

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 13 October 2011 01:46 (twelve years ago) link

Not strawmanning anyone in ILX, hoy

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 02:16 (twelve years ago) link

Blacks! Twitter! Blacks on twitter!

errant flynn, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:02 (twelve years ago) link

Man, you guys are paranoid as fuck. I meant like the billion entertainment blogs in my feed but OK

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:30 (twelve years ago) link

lots of ppl who don't give 2 shits about 90s ny rap in reality understand that it is 'worthy canonized serious music' now the way ppl fetishize dated concepts of 'soul' and thus pay deference to it in writing even if they dont actually know the diff between leaders of the new school & kwame

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:38 (twelve years ago) link

poor kwame :(

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:41 (twelve years ago) link

also is there really a 'disconnect' between people who like cheesy pop rap and people who are impressed by chris brown's rapping?

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:41 (twelve years ago) link

"i closed my eyes and i could swear he was Jermaine Dupri reincarnated...the GOAT!"

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:42 (twelve years ago) link

some dude will be fucking pedantic about anything

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:42 (twelve years ago) link

why don't you make a top 40 whiney posts you can be pedantic about and poll them

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:43 (twelve years ago) link

you know what i meant, al

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:43 (twelve years ago) link

oops i said my pedantic

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:44 (twelve years ago) link

i honestly don't know what your original rant "means" really dude, it's easier to make stupid jokes out of it than take it seriously

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:45 (twelve years ago) link

what does any of this really mean. D-40 feels me tho

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:45 (twelve years ago) link

My point is there is a machine in place via labels/mags/blogs that says 364 days a year people want shitty pop rap; and then once a year there's this REALLY POPULAR FEATURE on the BET Awards that is literally the only thing anyone knows about the BET awards where everyone acts like backpacker nerdballs and this is supposedly really novel and interesting and thrilling. And it's like, if people like this--WHICH THEY CLEARLY DO--why don't we reward people for rapping all year instead of like drowning everything in dipshitty Alex Da Kid Glee rap and Bruno hooks and hashtags

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:50 (twelve years ago) link

that's like saying "i see so many people excited on the internet about arcade fire playing on snl, why don't they sell more records than nickelback? it's a conspiracy man"

some dude, Thursday, 13 October 2011 03:51 (twelve years ago) link

west coast one is fun. i like YG's bit!

asap rocky really embarassing

t.i. standing with iggy azalea, b.o.b and trae in that pic really does underline how deeply bizarre grand hustle is in 2012

some dude, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 12:56 (eleven years ago) link

i think t.i. leaving dro out of the grand hustle cypher is the final straw for me

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 13:12 (eleven years ago) link

grand hustle has forgotten more dope rappers than most labels ever had on their roster

some dude, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 13:48 (eleven years ago) link

went straight to the West Coast one - Quik cracking me up

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:30 (eleven years ago) link

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

After Mac Miller did his thing I was thinking like ehhhh not tooo bad I guess but then Mystikal comes in and just lays waste by shear force.
