maybe the shaky analogy i'm looking for is people freaking out about prince's "while my guitar gently weeps" solo when it's been how many years since a top 10 hit even had a guitar solo -- i mean excitement displays of virtuosity probably gets even stronger when that particular type of skill falls out of favor in popular music
i think that's a good analogy, and just like these freestyles, no one really thinks it would work on the radio. not that people don't want to hear a great verse or a great guitar solo within the context of a hit, but pointed chops showcases like these makes for better internet videos than pop music.
