don't currently use an ios device, and i use spotify for my music, so i've had no need for it for a while. i deleted it a while back and didn't have a reason to get a new one until now, when i want to test out icloud stuff

markers, Thursday, 13 October 2011 06:49 (twelve years ago) link

iphone all set up and I'm up to the icloud backup setup screen where it's failing but because the language is still in CHINESE i have no idea what the fuck is going on

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 13 October 2011 08:21 (twelve years ago) link

so apparently i have an icloud problem that the other 250 million ios users haven't had

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 13 October 2011 08:37 (twelve years ago) link

mac os x lion is worth the $30. gestures and mission control are key tho: swiping from desktop to full-screen iTunes to dashboard is fundamentally easier than Expose/Spaces. I spend less time on the computer now b/c of it.

shaane, Thursday, 13 October 2011 08:55 (twelve years ago) link

Good to see Apple TV is even more packed with useless American shit that I will never ever use and cannot get rid of.

xp even apple hates the apple tv. it hardly seems worth getting excited about.

caek, Thursday, 13 October 2011 09:36 (twelve years ago) link

I never used Spaces before, so I'm still struggling to figure how to get the most of multiple desktops, etc. - I assume you put iTunes on full-screen as a separate desktop?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 13 October 2011 09:46 (twelve years ago) link

I've never understood the point of full-screen apps either. Is it to appease Windows users who are addicted to maximizing every program?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 October 2011 09:53 (twelve years ago) link

that and people who find it difficult to be alone with their thoughts

I like fullscreen on a macbook air where vertical real estate is limited

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 October 2011 10:34 (twelve years ago) link

I bet some things still creep into full-screen mode though, i.e. Growl notifications

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 October 2011 10:42 (twelve years ago) link

good to see growl is now (1) app store only (2) not free.

caek, Thursday, 13 October 2011 11:58 (twelve years ago) link

I think I sort of hate Growl

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 October 2011 11:59 (twelve years ago) link

growl is the WORST and I don't know why it needs to occupy a pane in my system prefs

2001: a based godyssey (dayo), Thursday, 13 October 2011 12:01 (twelve years ago) link

Well, uninstall it

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 October 2011 12:31 (twelve years ago) link

why is it good that it's not free?

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Thursday, 13 October 2011 12:56 (twelve years ago) link

information WANTS to be free iirc!

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Thursday, 13 October 2011 12:56 (twelve years ago) link

especially bad information

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 October 2011 13:00 (twelve years ago) link

iirc it's still open source so you can build it yourself for free if you want.

( ) (mh), Thursday, 13 October 2011 13:03 (twelve years ago) link

motherfucker

I have an old AOL account that I use as my Apple ID; apparently it is not recognized by iCloud.

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Thursday, 13 October 2011 13:44 (twelve years ago) link

You can upgrade it at appleid.apple.com iirc

stet, Thursday, 13 October 2011 14:03 (twelve years ago) link

... Where? Everywhere I've looked basically says "call Apple customer support and tell them you're canceling your AOL account"

The problem is that if your AOL account is named "bitterblackman", you can log into iTunes etc by selecting AOL and using "bitterblackman" as an ID. However, if you enter "bitterblack✧✧✧@a✧✧.c✧✧" as an Apple ID, it isn't recognized and the system will guide you into creating a new, separate Apple ID tied to that email address that is not connected to any of your apps/music. I know all of this because this is what happened to me about 3 years ago; I have been studiously avoiding my &qu✧✧✧@a✧✧.c✧✧" Apple ID in favor of my AOL account, which actually has record of all of my purchases, but now if I want to use iCloud it seems like I have little to no choice in the matter.

None of this is unsolvable, I'm just very annoyed.

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Thursday, 13 October 2011 14:19 (twelve years ago) link

In a similar situation to DJP with the difference being that as much as Apple keeps offering me the chance to fully combine email and AppleID it resolutely refuses to let me -- took forever to get the verification part done last night and now every time I do the next step it just locks up and sits there. I assume it's due to traffic overload but even so.

That said, so far everything else is going swimmingly; iOS5 runs perfectly well on my 3Gs as promised and I'll be interested to see what the Twitter integration might be best for, though I'm only poking around a bit at present. The AppleTV upgrade is nice enough, I suppose, though it seems mostly the only thing I could get out of it is hockey...yay?

You would say that.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 October 2011 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

I was annoyed that iCloud required an apple id that's an email address for use---I've had the same apple id for over a decade, but now I have to change it to an email address? ironically I used my gmail address! & then: it creates a @me.com email address for me! dumb

ha lol i am sure someone is offering it as a regular download somewhere. maybe i should submit it to the apple store and undercut them by 10c.

caek, Thursday, 13 October 2011 14:30 (twelve years ago) link

I feel like I should've killed my mobile me account first to make all this easier, since I really wasn't using it for anything other than galleries, which I'll probably just do in dropbox anyway now. Now I've got all these different addresses and confusing issues with what is syncing to what using how?

dan selzer, Thursday, 13 October 2011 14:34 (twelve years ago) link

Can't wait for @gruber's take:

After today's decision, I believe no company in the industry be able to launch any new Android-based touchscreen product in Australia anytime soon without incurring a high risk of another interim injunction. The two patents on which today's ruling is based aren't Galaxy Tab 10.1-specific at all. They will affect all Android-based smartphones and tablet computers, across all vendors.

i use Spaces a lot now, and yeah: i keep a maximized iTunes in its own pre-assigned space, ditto Lightroom.

dunno what it's like in Lion, but right now having pre-assigned Spaces for most-used apps is a tidy way for me to keep things organized (even though there's really no NEED for it)

Ah Dan sorry didn't realise it was an AOL account you'd used. That's like their old "use your BT bill as an Apple ID" kludge.

xp The audio files (word pronunciations) take up stacks of space.

Also apparently this is happening because apps are storing their replaceable files in the wrong directory or something. Marco Arment has had a big (and fair imo) whine about it.
