Updated my iPhone, and now it will not sync any music to my phone, and it wants to update 39 apps that are not actually ON my phone. Awesome. Time for a full-on factory restore, I guess...

schwantz, Thursday, 13 October 2011 16:26 (twelve years ago) link

you're SO good at detecting sarcasm

my sarcasm is REALLY FUNNY and WORTHWHILE

― caek, Thursday, October 13, 2011 10:28 AM

why is it so funny and worthwhile if i couldn't detect it?

i use Spaces a lot now, and yeah: i keep a maximized iTunes in its own pre-assigned space, ditto Lightroom.

dunno what it's like in Lion, but right now having pre-assigned Spaces for most-used apps is a tidy way for me to keep things organized (even though there's really no NEED for it)

Ah Dan sorry didn't realise it was an AOL account you'd used. That's like their old "use your BT bill as an Apple ID" kludge.

i'm using my tesco loyalty card to tweet these days, it's pretty cool

Finally got icloud backup working but like 10 seconds in it goes "YOU HAVE RUN OUT OF STORAGE"

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, make sure it's not syncing like 20gb worth of VLC films etc.

xp The audio files (word pronunciations) take up stacks of space.

Also apparently this is happening because apps are storing their replaceable files in the wrong directory or something. Marco Arment has had a big (and fair imo) whine about it.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

Josh from This is Our Next... is pissed because those are all things he posted to his blog yesterday or whatever.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 13 October 2011 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

Looks like there's nowhere for developers to store files that isn't spontaneously destroyed by cache clean-outs.

Why can’t I put newsstand in a folder?” Actually, you can! I like every other Apple Device owner, was excited about iOS 5. After installing it and getting everything set up, I was annoyed at the fact that Newsstand is not allowed to go in a folder. Honestly, it’s an app I don’t think I will ever be using. I tweeted my frustration on Twitter. Luckily I found out via a few Twitter friends it it IS possible to put Newsstand in a folder, you just need to trick your device into letting you, and you need to be quick about it. Simply follow these steps:

Take two apps and go to create a folder
The second the apps are in the folder and it’s doing the folder creation animation, drag Newsstand into the folder
As long as you’re quick enough Newsstand will go into the folder!

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 13 October 2011 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

btw that'd break Newsstand, wouldn't it? It opens like a folder so it'd open inside a folder, which wouldn't work, surely.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 13 October 2011 21:50 (twelve years ago) link

The idea is that if you don't want it cluttering up your precious home screen because you will never use it you can stick it into a folder along with the store apps and never look at it.

medium rear (silby), Thursday, 13 October 2011 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, just wondering what would happen if you opened it by accident.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 13 October 2011 21:56 (twelve years ago) link

lol it works! Newsstand is in a folder, and I can see it when I've got the folder open, but it doesn't display in the folder's icon when it's closed. Then you open the folder and open Newsstand and your phone resets itself (ha) BUT Newsstand stays in that folder.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 13 October 2011 21:58 (twelve years ago) link

Biggest hassle with new OS + new apps is (for me) having to learn a load of new words

Heh, yeah, this was a scary moment but it doesn't seem to have any lasting negative effects. And it's nice not to have it sat there all empty, saying "buy some magazines you cheapskate" every time I look at my phone.

JimD, Friday, 14 October 2011 09:14 (twelve years ago) link

has anyone tried to order an iphone over the verizon website? it doesnt look like they give you an option for applecare, which, given that apparently you need to buy it at the same time as the phone, is weird

There are... a lot of fuck-ups related to that at the minute

on the one hand that sucks

on the other hand, lol welcome to launch day, this happens every time and is why even if I was upgrading now I wouldn't have bought the phone today

i have decided not to upgrade to iOS5 because i'm concerned that my oystercard will stop tweeting my flickr account

Nerd-fun Siri things: "Beam me up", "tell me a joke", "open the pod bay doors" (keep doing this one until s/he gives in), "sing a song"

idg why I have to keep my iphone and ipad apps on my mac, and I can't find anything anywhere that says why I shouldn't delete them. Weird considering that's the second question I had about icloud. Running some tests now, seems to be okay.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 14 October 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

work just bought me a 13" MBA. stoked for the tiny fonts/tiny hard drive.

In case anybody cares, I can't get Superduper to back up over a network using AFP to save my life. However, if I use NFS it happens without a hitch. Which seems bizarre to me, but there you go.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 20 October 2011 10:40 (twelve years ago) link

I know I shouldn't be but I'm amazed by the number of Newsstand apps that are just facsimiles of print magazines. Some are great though. All the Condé Nast titles I've looked at are superb, especially the New Yorker which gets the hell out of your way and just lets you read. Project is also pretty decent. The Guardian is a bit too appy and difficult to penetrate but the idea is nice.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 22:30 (twelve years ago) link

Crap, maybe this should have been in the app thread, oh well.
