J0rdan S., Friday, 21 October 2011 02:24 (twelve years ago) link

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 21 October 2011 02:26 (twelve years ago) link

(if not u should check out their albums violet hour and strange geometry, i hear a lot of clientele in this album)

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 21 October 2011 02:27 (twelve years ago) link

and i'm also remembering before it got all LOL SHINS that oh, inverted world is actually a pretty great record

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 21 October 2011 02:27 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i haven't head much of the clientele, tho i've seen their named tossed around a bit wrt this record

& yeah the band i hear the most is the shins, esp in the vocals which is totally okay w/ me

buzza, Friday, 21 October 2011 02:29 (twelve years ago) link

really like the new record, but sometimes i wish they'd move out of their leisurely comfort zone--just a tad.

nerve_pylon, Friday, 21 October 2011 02:32 (twelve years ago) link

idk i could never imagine that

J0rdan S., Friday, 21 October 2011 02:36 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think anyone ever went "it would be nice if napalm death softened up a bit"

J0rdan S., Friday, 21 October 2011 02:38 (twelve years ago) link

lol true. i could actually see them doing some verrrrrrrrry slowwwww songs. bet they'd be great. real estate, that is.

nerve_pylon, Friday, 21 October 2011 03:02 (twelve years ago) link

really into this, even if it is p slight

bongs of a dread redeemer (Lamp), Friday, 21 October 2011 06:54 (twelve years ago) link

like the record, though they lack some sharpness sometime

nostormo, Friday, 21 October 2011 09:22 (twelve years ago) link

sometimes i wish they'd move out of their leisurely comfort zone--just a tad.

Me too. They're getting lots of attention these days--Washington Post, NPR, New York Times (and most importantly my high school age son came home talking about them) and it does not quite live up to that hype for me. Not bad, but too nice at times.

curmudgeon, Friday, 21 October 2011 14:18 (twelve years ago) link

not a bad little record.

Cindy Mancini can ride my lawnmower anytime (thebingo), Friday, 21 October 2011 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

ignored this band when they were first coming out -- i think the name did the trick -- but i am definitely digging what I've heard from the new one.
this review was bizarre, though, I thought: http://dustedmagazine.com/reviews/6738
cool that the writer has discovered OWS, but let's not go nuts.

tylerw, Friday, 21 October 2011 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

these guys are jersey-ites, right? kinda getting a feelies/only life vibe from it.

tylerw, Friday, 21 October 2011 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

i guess i feel like jangle pop is kind of slight by nature

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 21 October 2011 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

i'll take slight. this is sounding great this morning.

tylerw, Friday, 21 October 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

on the song green aisles right before the chorus, he sings "it was no so UN-wise" in this way that it so Shins, but i never really perceived the shins guy as having really distinct vocal mannerisms, but i guess he does

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 21 October 2011 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

You can get a 7" it's real for 3.99£ @ dominorecordco.com/uk/singles/16-08-11/its-real/ - such a lovely song. Regarding the byrds jangle thing tracklist includes a song called "Younger Than Yesterday".

niels, Friday, 21 October 2011 16:03 (twelve years ago) link

i think all y'll asking for less leisurely comfort zone are listening to the wrong band

J0rdan S., Friday, 21 October 2011 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

All their songs are basically remakes of the Stone Roses' "Shoot You Down", but that's fine by me.

henry s, Saturday, 22 October 2011 02:24 (twelve years ago) link

really want valuable poster SourPatchCorpse to come back and add some commentary here

Lana Cel-Ray (buzza), Saturday, 22 October 2011 03:35 (twelve years ago) link

I've been kinda down on these guys (live show is super boring imo, saw them open for Feelies in Brooklyn over the summer) but this new album is pretty great.

dmr, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

yeah they were p meh both times ive seen them live

INDIE BAND (Lamp), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

Wonder Years and All the Same are the standouts for me. the doo-doo-doo parts on Wonder Years are so jangly-80s-college rock.

dmr, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

they were pretty good a couple weeks ago at the astoria beer garden. they did a fun felt cover and the last track from days, all the same, sounded better than the record, really driving and danceable

mizzell, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

I would have liked to go to that. used to live in Astoria and always wondered why the beer garden never had bands.

dmr, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

I really like 'Green Aisles'

Muammar for the road (Michael White), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i think green aisles is my favorite track on the album
the beer garden show was fun, they're a good band to have play in sunshine.

mizzell, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 20:55 (twelve years ago) link

two weeks pass...

If anything, this is indie-rock comfort food, but so what? Pretty, almost too pretty. A fuck of a lot of bands mine a similar sound (neo-college rock?). So few get it right and make it sing that it's no wonder these guys are getting serious press.

i don't mind these guys but every single one of their songs sounds like "no rain" by blind melon with more boring vocals

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

nah, however said they were like an amerindie version of the clientele was otm. love the album.

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

they sound almost exactly like McCarthy without the politics. which rules.
they really frontloaded that second album though. the whole thing is great but the first 3 or 4 tracks just kill.

yeah they were surprisingly good live, i thought. the album is definitely very nice. the whole family likes it, which is rare!

One of the only modern records that I can't seem to get burnt out on, and I imagine it'll age really well.

Evan, Friday, 10 August 2012 03:14 (eleven years ago) link

I always semi-liked these guys but I am fully on board now after I've been listening to "Days" a ton since it came out. it's a great album and they were great live this past Saturday. covered the Clean! (Anything Could Happen)

also I never realized Alex Bleeker sings the lead vocal on Wonder Years

my three year old loves this record. and so do i!

I'm honestly not terribly familiar with Teenage Fanclub, so I'm not sure what to make of that particular comparison, but this is... different. It's hard to put my finger on it. I like it, but it's not quite what I expected.

basically Days is the only album they needed to make is how I break it down to an extent

not hearing Teenage Fanclub really at all

I'm loving this, it's their sophistipop record!

Ok, you know what youre going to get with Real Estate but I love their subtle tweaks to the melancholy summer voib on each albun

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 19:25 (four years ago) link

I've always relied on these guys for all of my jangly vitamins and minerals. New direction not really working for me.

Days is a couple months away from 10 years old. Still a classic!

I wonder if J0rdan S. ever came around to The Clientele within these last 10 years (was rereading upthread)...

the only time I engaged w/this band was seeing them at Pitchfork with J0rdan lol

three months pass...

Not sure if it "means" anything that no one had anything to share here about the new album...my impression is that there are a lot of people who likely feel this is a band whose best work is behind them. I continue to have a soft spot for Real Estate, even while being frustrated at a certain sameness that is both a weakness and strength of theirs.

Anyway--I'm enjoying the new one. "Water Underground" is definitely the most memorable, expertly composed + arranged song here and one of their best ever, I think. The little flourishes that distinguish this slightly from their others are welcome, like the pedal steel on half the tracks and the moody but propulsive rhythms of "Freeze Brain" and "You Are Here". The lyrics are mostly fine, sometimes weak, occasionally just right. I still think Martin's solo records are better than any of the last 3 Real Estate albums.

mr. milligan, Saturday, 2 March 2024 14:51 (one month ago) link

I like them a lot but yeah I think Atlas was their last really strong album. The new one is a bit mid, they always sound pleasant at least but this seems a bit inessential.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 2 March 2024 16:21 (one month ago) link

Oh meant to post about this, I've been enjoying it. Can't tell if the songs are at the level of the last album, which I loved, but Real Estate + Golden Hour producer is plenty for me, and I do really like where it goes in the last couple songs.

soup of magpies (geoffreyess), Sunday, 3 March 2024 02:52 (one month ago) link

Yeah this new one is definitely not top tier Real Estate, but I'll be damned if it still doesn't sound gorgeous.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 March 2024 18:43 (one month ago) link

Always pleasant, rarely essential.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Monday, 4 March 2024 19:13 (one month ago) link

A fragment of the video f "Water Underground" was played on the TV news in Spain last weekend. Yesterday I found out that "Atlas" is almost ten years old.
