been catching up on lots of hip-hop mixtapes this week - the young bleed album is straight-up awesome, the travis porter mixtape is pretty good but not quite as much uptempo ign'ant fun as i was expecting, reema major's mixtape is a must-hear if you liked "i'm the one" (and why wouldn't you love "i'm the one"), i'm really getting into davinci's feast or famine, rittz' white jesus is excellent but i can't get over a slight "a version of yelawolf that's just as technically good but not as charismatic" feeling about him. also, he looks like silent bob :(

oh yeah i thought t.i.'s single with pharrell, "hear ye hear ye", was embarrassing and turgid but the street single with big krit, "i'm flexin", is pretty awesome.

i assume i got jackie chain's "parked outside" from this thread but it's excellent too

and azealia banks' "212" clicked for me finally - i love the weird run-on things she does with metre, as well as I GUESS THAT CUNT GETTIN EATEN duh

Enjoying the majority of that Young Bleed as well. Holla At Uh Dog is a perfect track.

Production on the Young Bleed is really good. "Call The Police" is crazy

I think "true story" is a good mixtape if you enjoy a good beat, an effective chorus and some weird autotuned raps.

OK so there are 7 rap records I can think of coming out on the 31st or 1st. If you think of any others mention them here. Before they've dropped I'd be interested to hear predictions on relative quality. then maybe folks can post the order after they drop as well, if they feel like listening to them all. 2 chainz is the only one i'm definitely checking for but wale is the only one i'd cross the street to avoid hearing

Well the Black Milk/Danny Brown can already be heard in full. It's kinda bitty in that's there's like three proper songs on there. You can feel Danny getting a head of steam up and then it's into more mini instrumentals. "LOL" is dope though

ASAP Rocky - this should be pretty good, everything I've heard has been solid - the whole houston flow, screwed & chopped hook on every song could get tiresome though
Freddie Gibbs - don't know about this since Lil Lody is producing a lot of it, I like Gibbs though and "Rob Me A Nigga" is one of my fav songs this year (and that's on here), so definitely gonna listen to this. should have solid rapping at the very least.
LEP Bogus Boys - not heard anything from this but i liked their last mixtape
Wale - this is already leaked, it's alright from what i've heard, nice production
2 Chainz - should be dope though it definitely has the worst title out of all of these
Black Milk & Danny Brown - don't care abt this
Soulja Boy - dunno

i dont think ASAP owns his tracks enough as a rapper, there's some good song construction going on but the rapping feels fairly anonymous

I like LEP but I could see this going either way, sometimes they can underachieve. i have a soft spot for dudes though / hometown bias

freddie gibbs' stock has climbed with me, but we'll see, im looking for more dimension from him as a person; i feel like i don't really know the dude

wale, im hoping this has a couple pop songs like 600 benz or that way that make up for it being wale, who is totally a boring rapper

2 chainz i'm really undecided on, he has some really good songs but considering he's dominating atlanta in the wake of waka/gucci/jeezy/t.i. it feels like a pretty big step down for atlanta

black milk & danny brown -- i like how danny raps, i dont always like his production

soulja boy -- his last tape was straight trash minus like one song, feel like people keep bringing him up as a joke

2 chainz sometimes says actually-clever things & other times hes like "when we had sex I was in the Mercedes / and I ain't crazy but if that's my baby then we gonna have to name the lil' baby Mercedes!!!!" and hammers it home like its a punchline instead of super lame, and im like, this is the guy everyone says has got next?

his buzz feels real, but its almost like he just happened to be on the bench when Atlanta needed someone to take it over, and he'd just changed his name to something more marketable, so he took the role by default. i dunno

that said he does have a bunch of great songs so

i always thought he had some great hilarious lines back on the first playaz circle album or even on random DTP joints before that but i am kind of amazed by his ascendance, dude definitely doesn't look/seem like a star or anything. also lol @ a billboard article about him i read today saying he's 27 years old.

fat trel is the first d.c. rapper gettin played on local radio in a long time that i can stand but i haven't really checked him out too much yet

i dunno i just saw an interview with him where they were talking about pushing it back & getting it up on itunes, & dropping a mixtape of freestyles instead. kind of frustrating but i think for a lot of people there is a pretty big back catalog to get into. and the #manupbandup mixtape is definitely a well-rounded collection. the only track i wish they'd included is 'party like her' xxxp
