it isnt going to last forever.

is this because luthiers's stocks of good wood will soon be gone?

in the future everyone will be playing a soloette except in the privacy of their own home

An Outcast From Time's Feast (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 27 October 2011 02:04 (twelve years ago) link

wood is an issue, but mainly i am talking about the fact that the insanely low cost of production in china/indonesia is going to end, and that the attempts to build guitars in even more desperately poor countries (vietnam/india) have been abject failures (mostly climate related actually, its hard to dry wood in somewhere as humid as vietnam). the new rumbling is that the next step would be to try and build guitars in sub-saharan africa somewhere because basically the world is running out of people that will work for nearly no wages.

also i would respond to this thread more if it didnt keep being timestamp fuxxored :(

Thread is trying to travel back in time to Jimi Hendrix's performance of "Like a Rolling Stone" at Monterey Pop to kill Bob Dylan's grandmother

wood is an issue...

are we depleting supplies of some of the common electric git woods, too? you'd think ppl would learn after over-harvesting all the red spruce and brazilian.

arby's, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 02:29 (twelve years ago) link

two years pass...

Anyone know of a good semi-hollow body electric with a whammy bar. I hear good things about the Artcore guitars but they don't have the whammy. Gretch maybe? i needs me some whammy on my guitar.

Heez, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 23:23 (ten years ago) link

actually a ton of the artcores have bigsbys on them, and i totally vouch for them. also the hagstrom tremar series vikings and hjs, and the reverend tricky gomez and club king models. and a ton of other stuff im not thinking of probably

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 00:34 (ten years ago) link

Killer. Never heard of half of those but that's why I asked. Thanks

Heez, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 00:55 (ten years ago) link

Okay, how about what electric guitar would you buy for less than a grand?

Heez, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 23:52 (ten years ago) link

within semi hollows, or in general.

either way im going to have an endless long list for this one i think

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 00:36 (ten years ago) link

Epiphone has done a few Casinos with Bigsbys stock in the past few years. They got a couple of more rockabilly inspired semi-hollows too that have 50s style tremolos.

earlnash, Thursday, 23 January 2014 00:53 (ten years ago) link

Some of those newer Gretsch Electromatic guitars are pretty fab too, quite a few of them have Bigsbys.

earlnash, Thursday, 23 January 2014 00:55 (ten years ago) link

I'm still playing the fender strat I got when I was 16, which is fine i guess, but i like the versatility of the semi hollow. i'm playing stuff in the vein of the band/neil young type shit if that helps. not really sure what i want... i just know i need an upgrade. durability would definitely be high on the list of qualities i'm looking for.

thanks for the recs earlnash

Heez, Thursday, 23 January 2014 02:33 (ten years ago) link

What kind of amp are you using?

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 24 January 2014 09:39 (ten years ago) link

Peavey Classic 30 tube amp.

I've been looking at these G&L guitars mentioned up thread. Seems like they might fit what I'm used to, but maybe too similar to the strat I already have.

Heez, Friday, 24 January 2014 17:15 (ten years ago) link

Perhaps check out a Hagstrom Viking? If I didn't have anything and had to start from zero, I'd be tempted to go that way. All Fender here too...

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 30 January 2014 05:46 (ten years ago) link

If you're playing The Band/Neil Young-type stuff you might as well go full-on Americana and buy a Kay Jazz II

Also check out the Fender Coronado reissue

DDD, Thursday, 30 January 2014 12:29 (ten years ago) link

You didn't name a price point -- if you have money, definitely check out a Duesenberg (don't let the list price freak you out -- these are often deeply discounted).

Three Word Username, Thursday, 30 January 2014 13:08 (ten years ago) link

Aha, you snuck that "under a grand" bit in. For under a grand, there will be serious compromises to be made, I think, mostly in durability, unless you get lucky at the right pawn shop.

Three Word Username, Thursday, 30 January 2014 13:16 (ten years ago) link

I'm gonna go to some guitar shops this weekend. One is mostly used gear and the other has the reverends jjj mentioned. I'll keep y'all updated!

Heez, Thursday, 30 January 2014 15:25 (ten years ago) link

Went to a real nice guitar shop this wknd and played some reverend and prestige semi hollows. Definitely leaning more to the reverend but I need to look around a bit more.

Also, this is the first shop I've been to where they will plek your guitar. Good investment or waste of cash?

Heez, Monday, 3 February 2014 17:12 (ten years ago) link

Am so used to correcting the typical intonational weird spots on basses with my left hand automatically that the one pleked instrument I have played -- just for a couple of minutes -- was kinda weird, but I can see myself getting used to it and liking it a lot.

Three Word Username, Monday, 3 February 2014 17:32 (ten years ago) link

Played a Gretch Electromatic last night and really like it. I think it's in the lead now, but I've gotta play the Hagstrom first.

Heez, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 17:22 (ten years ago) link

The electromatic 6420s are super-nice for the buck. Dead sexy too.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 5 February 2014 22:35 (ten years ago) link

Okay any opinions re the hagstrom Viking deluxe vs the gretch electromatic 5620?

Heez, Thursday, 6 February 2014 20:42 (ten years ago) link

the 5620s are newish - never seen one in the wild but they're nice-looking. thinner than the trad gretsch. nice rock flavor. the hilotron in the neck is new too, so no notions on that but the blacktop filtertron in the bridge is legit. if they're anything like the 5420s they'll feel a little plasticky but look, play, and sound fantastic. also thumbprint fret markers rule.

no experience with hagstrom but i hear good things. kinda comes down to how it feels in your hands and if you have a preference double vs singlecut. also it costs a little more.

(meant 5420 up there obvs)

resulting post (rogermexico.), Friday, 7 February 2014 06:50 (ten years ago) link

Bought the gretsch btw. Waiting for it to ship. I figure I can return it if I'm not feeling it but I don't see that happening

Heez, Wednesday, 12 February 2014 18:36 (ten years ago) link

rad. what color?

That one is pretty. The first one is a little too cartoony/ironic martini lounge for me.

I actually went and looked at it the other day and it's a lot more RED than appears in the photo. It's like a fire-engine red.
