Don't be ashamed. I recently had a discussion with a friend where the topic was "good bands whom you associate with the worst music tastes" and Muse came out pretty much on top. As long as you don't prance around in their shirts or blather about how they're the greatest band of the decade or whatever, there's plenty to enjoy.

Other 2 albums are REALLY bad, tho
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:10 (fifteen years ago) link
Thanks. What's so bad about Black Holes.... The reviews make it sound like it's their best. Is it more electronic or something?
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:13 (fifteen years ago) link
It's got a couple of decent songs but it's by far their most facile, limp record. Grandstanding suits them, and it's no coincidence that the best songs on BHAR are the two where they REALLY go for it (Take A Bow and Knights Of Cydonia). I dunno, tho, maybe you'll like it more! Try it.
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:15 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, I'd rather hear them go for it. They sound to me like a cross between Rush and Supergrass. At least the songs I've heard so far.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:19 (fifteen years ago) link
Which songs have you heard?
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:20 (fifteen years ago) link
New Born (which I thought was the superior song) and the aforementioned Knights of Cydonia (which has good parts but is made much better by the visuals).
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:28 (fifteen years ago) link
New Born IS the superior song. It's the lead-off track on OOS, which is a fun, kick-ass album. If you liked it, you'll like the record.
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:29 (fifteen years ago) link
Cool. I'll report back after I visit my buddy at Everyday Music.

Don't be ashamed.
no, do be ashamed.
how are these mooks better/more 'groundbreaking' (whatever that means) than lcd soundsystem? im not even a big lcd guy, but srsly fuck a muse.
― Brohan Hari, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:31 (fifteen years ago) link
Fucks sake NRQ, they're totally NOT groundbreaking, stop trying to troll me
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:32 (fifteen years ago) link
Honestly, I listen to plenty of groundbreaking music. I'm just curious about Muse because I heard a song that sounded good to me.
Fuck an LCD Soundsystem.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:32 (fifteen years ago) link
basically, that. plz don't bring up last night's embarrassing rants in today's shameless funseeking!
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:34 (fifteen years ago) link
muse and queen occupy the same sphere for me: bombast that I can see why it's fun, but does nothing for me. muse are slightly less corny than queen tho, admittedly.
― rjberry, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 15:24 (fifteen years ago) link
Hellishly mastered.
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 16:33 (fifteen years ago) link
I have recently decided that Muse are quite good.

His voice is the weak link though.
Nate Carson never did get back to me.
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:31 (fourteen years ago) link
It is perhaps a mistake to sound like Jeb Fuckley on amphetamines in EVERY song, but often I find it works quite nicely.
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:32 (fourteen years ago) link
I wish he'd be a bit less breathy and squeaky.
― chap, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:37 (fourteen years ago) link
I remember being in a record shop when they were playing a Muse album, and I was like, "LOL, he sounds like Peter Hammill at 12 years old on this song, that's quite amusing... ah, hold on, he's still singing in the same voice on this song too... Jesus, he's doing it again!"
― Aw naw, no' Annoni oan noo an' aw (Tom D.), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:38 (fourteen years ago) link
Jeb Fuckley on amphetamines
Oh my god how did I not think of this description before!
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 14:21 (fourteen years ago) link
OK, I've just tried to listen to an entire album (Black Holes and Revelations) and didn't managed it without some heavy skipping. None of the songs are bad, but severe diminishing returns going on.
― chap, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link
That's their worst album. Listen to the middle two. They're much, much, much, much better.
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:06 (fourteen years ago) link
Jeb Fuckley
LOL, son of Bum Tickly (or Tickly Bum, if you prefer)

I'll give Origin of Symmetry a try in a day or two. New Born is probably my favourite single of theirs.

new Muse single sounds like Goldfrapp mixed with Dr Who mixed with Blondie Call Me mixed with T-rex

No change, then.

This band -- like the band Elbow -- sounds like they'd be as dull as ditchwater.
OTOH, "Few people would dispute that Elbow have given us the album of the year," so WTF do I know?
― Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 4 August 2009 22:19 (fourteen years ago) link
(nothing, that's what.)
lol this lot and Elbow are pretty much at polar ends of mainstream British rock
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 22:20 (fourteen years ago) link
And oddly enough, both suck.

You guys are all so wrong. Muse is one of the best bands of the past 10 years.
― Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 01:23 (fourteen years ago) link
Ned and I do not agree on everything. Sometimes, a British band comes along and my own critical faculties evaporate where his remain steadfast. It is my blessing, and my curse.
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 01:28 (fourteen years ago) link
I like these guys a lot. Still haven't heard the first album, but like the two I have heard and the live one a bunch. Looking forward to the new album.

Ok I think they're abhorrent and listening to them gives me headache but I was watching their Wembley Stadium performance from a cpuple of years ago on tv and I'll admit they seem pretty good live, manage to sound very close and maybe better than they do on record.

Widdly guitar arpeggios. Trying to pass off lyrics like "snowflakes melt into the ocean at midnight" as profound. Gets old fast.

Jeez, I never realized until right now how badly Muse has been copying The The all these years.
― Austin, Thursday, 28 June 2012 02:50 (eleven years ago) link
xxp that's so bad, they could have got Vikings era Prince to do it and he'd have come up with something better. It starts off with some anonymous national anthem, then throws in the 'ha ha ha ha' bit from 'O Superman', then some sub-Queen lyrics and a guitar solo that sounds like Brian May in a washing machine. They must surely have written this as a piss take, right? Regardless of whether they did or not, this song is probably going to be played at the opening ceremony. To a TV audience of hundreds of millions. I guess maybe the organisers wanted something more stupid than Boris Johnson at the ceremony. We could probably get Muse to represent the UK in next year's Eurovision. They'll either win outright or lose and we'll be rid of them.

If the Olympics were held in Ireland and they got Jedward to do the official song, it'd be better than this.

So Muse were the only band dumb enough or neo-Liberal enough to actually buy the whole "play for free, no need to pay you, think of the exposure" line?

It seems to be mostly cheaply made 30 minute "Then she made this movie" documentaries on various film stars, with Derek Malcolm - who I assumed was dead after watching some of these, he looks so frail - and various other talking heads.
