gbx i'd look at the cost of a mini + ipad if you've already got the monitor. recall that imac hard drives cannot be upgraded. (minis can.) of course the airs are incredibly sweet. i am biased cause i just got a mini but i have to say that after like a decade+ of using a laptop as my main computer there is something nice about not constantly plugging/unplugging/moving my main computer. it's just there. i wake it up.

Really, the perfect Apple TV box/set top box that does all television needs and connects to a display makes more sense.

But with a laptop you get all the advantages of a mini, plus you can take it around with you if you need to. Also, you have a in built secondary monitor should you need the real estate. The only disadvantage I can see is paying a larger price for that,

not my point xp. my point is that journalists writing about apple should realise what i'm sure apple do: they make more money outside the u.s. than in it (true for a couple of years now iirc), the u.s. media/telecoms markets aren't much like those in the rest of the world, and there are bigger, more profitable media companies than comcast and at&t, with regional influence.

actually found a mini benchmark, too, and the i7 is like 33% faster than the i5. hmmmm...

depends on how long you want to keep it for? $100 more over 4-6 years is not a lot.

otoh it's not gonna make chrome 33% faster, maybe just handbrake encoding or something

Lightroom? also 90 w/discount. boosting to 8gb w/aftermarket RAM would be 55. and do I need a 7200 rpm drive? etc.

basically:

for what i do--normal stuff, LR, Portal (and the like)--would i benefit more from

RAM (+55)
processor (+90)
7200rpm HD (+135)

or some combination thereof? i can get a refurb (2.5 i5, 4gb, 500gb) for 699 (v. 749 new).

whereas an i7 is 869, and 1004 w/a 7200rpm drive. part of the appeal of the mini is the economy, and coming from a 2007 MBP with (2.4 core duo, 4gb RAM, 160gb @ 5400? 7200?), p much anything is going to seem like lightning

as someone who performed surgery on his 12" powerbook to swap in a 7200 rpm drive, and who now switches between a SSD and a 5400 drive on the regular, I don't think the difference is that great - well it is if you're 18 and obsessed with spanking benchmarks, but at my ripe old age I don't really notice/care that apps are opening up faster or slower

OTM, a friend who works in the industry emailed me the other night saying exactly that.

if you have an external case and superduper, swapping hard drives at any point in the lifetime of your mac mini will be a trivial task. I wouldn't worry about it until you start bumping up against the limits xp

I recently upgraded to 8GB on my 3 year old mbp and was surprised at the difference it made in running aperture. LR is generally leaner and meaner but would probably still benefit from a boost.

btw this is the RAM I got - pointing it out because newegg has several different versions of crucial 8gb packs. the newest and latest one got shitty reviews, this one is better I think. (the newer one is blue in color)

opening up minis is a pain in the ass though. it's not that trivial. I certainly cracked my case doing it to mine (which is four or five years old now).

replacing the hd in a new mini is a fairly involved operation. the nice thing though is that it can take TWO, so in a few years when it starts feeling creaky I'm going to put in both an SSD and a big ass HD. (or possibly pay someone to do it if I'm feeling wussy)

keep in mind that for Portal and the like, a SSD will help a fair bit

Um, Portal isn't insanely graphics-intense but when you realize that some newer FPS games have GIGABYTES of texture data in each level and they dynamically load them based on where you are, it's not that much of a stretch! Plus, loading levels in Portal happens a lot more often than it does in larger games.

Wow, Siri evidently can be ported to the both the original iPhone 4 and 4th-gen iPod Touch if you hack (jailbreak) your iPod or phone. I assume then that it can theoretically run on the iPad and iPad 2 as well. I never saw any overriding need to resort to jailbreaking but this might tempt me. What I don't get is that Siri depends on Apple servers to work, and I'd think they could sniff out a rogue device trying to use it and refuse your request.

They probably will update the rogue device sniffing, as the people who have made this work admitted that they had to copy some files from an iPhone 4S to get it running.

sooooooooooo i think i'm pulling the trigger today.

i may have been convinced to get an iMac + iPad. the reason being: friend might sell me a cheap gaming console (which i have never owned), which i could plug in to my sister's display and use for games/movies. which is preferable to sitting at my desk for that stuff (FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS).

q, tho: macrumors is saying that the imac and ipad are due for updates soon. should i even give a shit?

IMO everything gets updated all the time; if you continually wait, you will never have yr new machine. If you've identified what you need and you want it now, get it.
