thx dude

actually found a mini benchmark, too, and the i7 is like 33% faster than the i5. hmmmm...

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

depends on how long you want to keep it for? $100 more over 4-6 years is not a lot.

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 18:12 (twelve years ago) link

otoh it's not gonna make chrome 33% faster, maybe just handbrake encoding or something

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

Lightroom? also 90 w/discount. boosting to 8gb w/aftermarket RAM would be 55. and do I need a 7200 rpm drive? etc.

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

basically:

for what i do--normal stuff, LR, Portal (and the like)--would i benefit more from

RAM (+55)
processor (+90)
7200rpm HD (+135)

or some combination thereof? i can get a refurb (2.5 i5, 4gb, 500gb) for 699 (v. 749 new).

whereas an i7 is 869, and 1004 w/a 7200rpm drive. part of the appeal of the mini is the economy, and coming from a 2007 MBP with (2.4 core duo, 4gb RAM, 160gb @ 5400? 7200?), p much anything is going to seem like lightning

right? sorry for shitting up this thread, again

haven't checked but feel that hard drives are gonna be expensive for a while because of the flooding in thailand

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

as someone who performed surgery on his 12" powerbook to swap in a 7200 rpm drive, and who now switches between a SSD and a 5400 drive on the regular, I don't think the difference is that great - well it is if you're 18 and obsessed with spanking benchmarks, but at my ripe old age I don't really notice/care that apps are opening up faster or slower

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, and a macworld review says "... while bumping the $599 Mac mini to 8GB of RAM and a faster, bigger hard drive through Apple will set you back $450, going the DIY route will cost as little as $150."

OTM, a friend who works in the industry emailed me the other night saying exactly that.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 October 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

if you have an external case and superduper, swapping hard drives at any point in the lifetime of your mac mini will be a trivial task. I wouldn't worry about it until you start bumping up against the limits xp

I recently upgraded to 8GB on my 3 year old mbp and was surprised at the difference it made in running aperture. LR is generally leaner and meaner but would probably still benefit from a boost.

btw this is the RAM I got - pointing it out because newegg has several different versions of crucial 8gb packs. the newest and latest one got shitty reviews, this one is better I think. (the newer one is blue in color)

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

opening up minis is a pain in the ass though. it's not that trivial. I certainly cracked my case doing it to mine (which is four or five years old now).

akm, Friday, 28 October 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

they've redesigned the enclosure, from what i understand, check the link i put upthread

also which one of you jackanapes bought that 699 mini >:[

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

replacing the hd in a new mini is a fairly involved operation. the nice thing though is that it can take TWO, so in a few years when it starts feeling creaky I'm going to put in both an SSD and a big ass HD. (or possibly pay someone to do it if I'm feeling wussy)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 28 October 2011 21:26 (twelve years ago) link

keep in mind that for Portal and the like, a SSD will help a fair bit

dayo is just full of anti-ssd sentiment :D

mh, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:18 (twelve years ago) link

is apple tv any good in the uk? Anyone got it?

owenf, Sunday, 30 October 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

wait mh how will an SSD help with portal once the game's loaded into the memory and stuff?

dayo, Sunday, 30 October 2011 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

Um, Portal isn't insanely graphics-intense but when you realize that some newer FPS games have GIGABYTES of texture data in each level and they dynamically load them based on where you are, it's not that much of a stretch! Plus, loading levels in Portal happens a lot more often than it does in larger games.

mh, Sunday, 30 October 2011 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

hey mh I already found the answer fifteen minutes ago, but thanks for pointing it out again

Wow, Siri evidently can be ported to the both the original iPhone 4 and 4th-gen iPod Touch if you hack (jailbreak) your iPod or phone. I assume then that it can theoretically run on the iPad and iPad 2 as well. I never saw any overriding need to resort to jailbreaking but this might tempt me. What I don't get is that Siri depends on Apple servers to work, and I'd think they could sniff out a rogue device trying to use it and refuse your request.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/10/30/jailbreak_hack_enables_siri_on_iphone_4_4th_gen_ipod_touch.html

Everything else is secondary (Lee626), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 05:24 (twelve years ago) link

They probably will update the rogue device sniffing, as the people who have made this work admitted that they had to copy some files from an iPhone 4S to get it running.

mh, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 13:43 (twelve years ago) link

sooooooooooo i think i'm pulling the trigger today.

i may have been convinced to get an iMac + iPad. the reason being: friend might sell me a cheap gaming console (which i have never owned), which i could plug in to my sister's display and use for games/movies. which is preferable to sitting at my desk for that stuff (FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS).

q, tho: macrumors is saying that the imac and ipad are due for updates soon. should i even give a shit?

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

what is apple tv even

cozen, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

IMO everything gets updated all the time; if you continually wait, you will never have yr new machine. If you've identified what you need and you want it now, get it.

xpost -- a handy little thing.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

id probably give a shit about the iPad upgrade

max, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:25 (twelve years ago) link

what are the alleged iPad upgrades, btw

if there's nothing listed, I wouldn't worry about it

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

ipad upgrades not likely for at least four months, going by the usual idevice cycle

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

probably a faster processor and a retina display

dayo, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:28 (twelve years ago) link

but yeah smart money's on it not coming out until after christmas

dayo, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:29 (twelve years ago) link

Likely pulling the trigger on an iPad tonight as well, and I never buy anything. Had been using a friend's early-gen iPhone until losing it (:-<) and need to take great photos tomorrow or would wait and order online and save taxes...

your way better (Eazy), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:38 (twelve years ago) link

Okay basically I have an ipad 2 and I use it seriously 800% more than I ever thought I would. The two things that really shit me about it (neither of which can be helped) and therefore put me in the ipad 3 queue on day one are (1) the weight and (2) the low-res screen. The latter encumbers Chinese text – not prohibitive, just annoying. Having said all that, if I were you I would buy an ipad 2 right now.

xp if you want to take great photos, don't buy an ipad.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

Is the camera worse/way-worse than the iPhone?

your way better (Eazy), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:54 (twelve years ago) link

The iPad camera is basically "I guess it has a camera"

mh, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

yeah pretty sure it's a lower quality camera.

I ended up not using my ipad as much as I thought I would, ended up giving it to my parents.

dayo, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

it's not very good for ilxing, awkward to hold for movie watching, games were fun though

dayo, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

The back camera is more-or-less webcam grade and the front camera is even worse. Even if it had a decent camera, it's a very bad shape and size for taking photos.

The portability of the ipad is sort of astounding. You can just slip it in whatever pack you already take around with you. It's not so heavy that you'd really notice it being in there.

eek

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

Ah, shit.

I've been on the fence about whether to get the iPhone for the complete portability (even without getting phone service with it) or the iPad. Taking photos on the fly is good for my work, but so is being able to access media apps like New Yorker...

fukkin migration assistant is going to take 4eva

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

New Yorker app is indeed great, but it's an expensive subscription if you don't already have an ipad.

xxp ^___^

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

btw migration assistant was a good idea, right? like, i'm not shooting myself in the foot by not starting from scratch? cuz i'm not sure how much of what's on my computer will play nicely with Lion, and I'd hate to have a janky machine right off the bat
