A$AP is a way better pop prospect out of the gate than anyone on Odd Future. He doesn't have the homophobia/misogyny of those guys, just has a vaguely modish sound and is a competent rapper. I like him.

Number None, Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:27 (twelve years ago) link

his buzz feels real, but its almost like he just happened to be on the bench when Atlanta needed someone to take it over, and he'd just changed his name to something more marketable, so he took the role by default. i dunno

kind of funny not just how true this is but how crucial the name change is. if he were still Tity Boi, Future would probably be the hottest atlanta rapper right now

ASAP Rocky - i haven't really been into any of his songs after "peso"... i mean he has like... 3.5 minutes of great recorded music if you take into account that 20 seconds of "purple swag" is just "peso" slowed down. so idk, i think he has a pretty good idea of who he wants to be as an artist, but his talent as a writer needs to catch up to that. the song from a few weeks ago that was him rapping over a piano beat was p lame. and "bass" is just a rehash.

Freddie Gibbs - funny, i was just thinking today about how ridiculous it is that this guy "signed" with jeezy or whatever. i mean, jeezy can't even get his own career off the ground, and now he's supposed to do something for freddie gibbs? i don't think i'll be listening to this album

LEP Bogus Boys - suspect this will be pretty solid if unspectacular. as it goes.

Wale - ha, obviously this is going to be pretty bad. i haven't seen any of the features or production on this but i can't imagine caring about this album at all. his rapping is pretty bothersome.

2 Chainz - uhh 2 chainz is cool def. probably not good enough a rapper to carry a tape front to back but i bet they'll be some banger on here. idk \(o_O)/

Black Milk & Danny Brown - heard this was only okay

Soulja Boy - will prob have one classic song to add to his 2011 greatest hits collection. i think we're up to like 6 songs from this year.

http://youtu.be/L6SHwQuo5yw

whole tape has such a playful beat selection

tpp, Sunday, 30 October 2011 09:44 (twelve years ago) link

ASAP Rocky : not a great rapper but seems able to make good songs. i'm interested to see what happens.

Freddie Gibbs : midwestcaddillacmuzik was dope, then his output beacame pretty bad, the new tape has some good producers. i'm interested to see what happens.

LEP Bogus Boys : never really cared for them, but maybe they'll make a tape i'll listen for a week.

Wale : don't care

2 Chainz : actually the project i'm more interested in. trap-a-velli & codeine cowboys were good mixtapes, expecting the same for the new one. While not the most skilled rapper his style definitely stands out. I like it.

Black Milk & Danny Brown : heard it wasn't really good. Not gonna check.

Soulja Boy : don't really care

"rush hour" off the lep with meek mill leaked, it's good but without a better chorus or bigger beat it sounds like album track material to me.

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

come on really? i can see you have a thing against this guy but its pretty obviously: to a lot of people it's way more interesting music that's why. he's got a whole team he's introducing. he's bringing two internet niche dudes into his camp with this release (clams and SGP) and putting them out into the world of missinfo and nah right. he's blending all these weird influences out of NYC. it's a whole movement with its own cryptic codes and symbols, which as proven by of and Weeknd is the new model for success when channelled through tumblr

not even gonna talk about wale and freddie gibbs...love danny brown but black milk is equally zzzz as those other two

lep bogus boys, i honestly don't know much about them i'm sure they make good music but what's the story there

and soulja and 2 chainz are mostly lol to everyone

this is how buzz happens now. it's 2011

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 00:59 (twelve years ago) link

the only people asap rocky is more popular than 2 chainz for is ny media types

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:01 (twelve years ago) link

freddie gibbs managed to get buzz back when the buzz revolved around those blogs. now it jsut doesnt originate from there anymore.

in 2012 it will work some other way. bt in 2011 it's very obvious how buzz was made over and over

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:01 (twelve years ago) link

All this has just made me realize how much I've (at least temporarily) stopped caring about keeping up with rap. Even the shit I'd probably like I can't be bothered with right now. :/

The Reverend, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:01 (twelve years ago) link

ok are we talking about popularity or buzz? buzz is a media invention. youre clearly talking about media types that you follow on twitter etc. BUZZING more about ASAP than 2 Chainz.

no one has gone on to the street and done a poll obviously. in a national popular vote 2 chainz would win. if you could measure buzz asap would win and one day he'll be MUCH more popular than fucking 2 chainz.

lol you are riding dude's jock hard. this dude's being horrendously overrated. as a rapper hes average at best man.

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:06 (twelve years ago) link

ooh hes using clams casino!! how novel!

so basically, being clued in to what stereogum considers dope rap music is more likely to make a rapper successful than building a steady grassroots fanbase over years & years?

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:07 (twelve years ago) link

ny rappers getting onto SIZZURP eight years late doesnt make something novel. max b incorporated national influences before ASAP, its nothing new

a friend of mine just now:

Senor Pants: im listening to ASAP Rocky and i was gunna say why would anyone give this guy 3 million dollars
Senor Pants: but then that reminded me of papoose calling himself the 1.5 million dollar man

1) he has a narrative that's MUCH more interesting than "earnest rapper gets signed doesnt put out music than does". blogs and magazines create naratives around these guys and then they all just line up to the pump . asap's is way more rich
2) there's a whole set of codes and a language to this guy's brand that is much more stylish than anything any of the people you listed have. this is music being sold to an audience that his much more heterogeneous than it used to be and one accustomed to music that comes with mythology. they are iconoclasts. look at every artist that broke out of tumblr in the past year and they have mystery/symbols/signs/logos/memes that look good and reward deeper engagement and so are spread around.

this is an argument about what impacts magazines, which yeah has an influence on what people buy & has forever cf the clipse, but is not even close to the whole story & discounts the influence of like Magic City or street buzz or touring or any number of other things

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

yo you're changing the argument as we're having it.

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

i'm not gonna make any proclamations about whether or not ASAP is going to be a return on an investment made by executive, but surfboards is right.

here's the shortest possible version of why ppl are on jocking asap right now: he's inherently and effortlessly, and ppl want to be around that, and always have

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 01:14 (twelve years ago) link

meek mill is a bigger rapper than asap rocky right now w/ almost any rapper i've interviewed. Every rapper wants that asap rocky buzz but how many of them listen to it & are like "yeah asap rocky is a dope rapper"? none
