Yes, it is! Promotion is integral to musics success. Sorry it just is

alright fine. i think you're looking at the wrong things, but whatever.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:04 (twelve years ago) link

Drake is not predestined to choose asap rocky! There sound only goes together because it is going together, because drake made that choice. Youre acting like this is a natural thing but he could have as easily chosen anyone

and that crappy Big Sean "My Last" got play too xxxpost

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:05 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i imagine drake spinning the same 'blog buzz' wheel to pick out his tour lineup as ross did for his label roster

some dude, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:06 (twelve years ago) link

whatever -- i think a very obvious line can be drawn from drake to ASAP that can inform why the latter is "popular" now, also why the former is taking the latter on tour

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:08 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, based on my vague understanding of asap rocky from that one video and some press i don't really see any 'obvious line' between him and drake that you couldn't draw between a thousand other pairs of names

some dude, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:10 (twelve years ago) link

I was just in Memphis and heard Webbie "What's Happenin'" about a half dozen times on the radio over the course of the weekend.

I did not hear any ASAP Rocky.

based grandpa (noz), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:11 (twelve years ago) link

and that, folks, is why yo gotti is a major pop star

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:13 (twelve years ago) link

"what's happenin" bangs but it's weird to me that webbie ever had a career, did the world really need someone who sounds like birdman if he couldn't rap on beat

some dude, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:14 (twelve years ago) link

well whatever -- you yourself called drake some kind of sea change, and i'd agree. and i think there's a lot of sonic similarities b/w drake's new stuff, the darkness and drugginess of a lot of it and a$ap's stuff. i think their images, in terms of fashion, intersect a lot, altho a$ap def attempts to have more of a street edge to him.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:16 (twelve years ago) link

Webbie is a good rapper thats crazy.

The funny thing is that asap rocky s entire aesthetic is totally street rap influences

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:17 (twelve years ago) link

i wish surfboards was still around backing me up

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:18 (twelve years ago) link

lol @ you buying the whole 'new edgy drake' thing -- whatever extent his new shit is DARK and DRUGGY isn't really any more than his old shit. i mean for better or worse his aesthetic hasn't changed or evolved one bit in the last two and a half years.

well sure, i mean he is from HARLEM after all

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:19 (twelve years ago) link

i'm being mean about webbie, he's not that bad, but he really really cannot stay on beat for two bars straight ever

some dude, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:19 (twelve years ago) link

really you don't detect any difference b/w stuff like "marvin's room" and "i'm on one" vs "forever" and "over" and "miss me" and "fancy"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:20 (twelve years ago) link

"marvin's room" doesn't seem that different from "successful" or whatever, nah. he was talking about syrup on his earlier shit too. this is a bunch of 'omg he stopped shaving' bullshit.

some dude, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:22 (twelve years ago) link

drake occasionally cursing and acting debauched is like his version of coldplay being vaguely weird and arty -- they just feel so guilty about being THAT successful just being their dorky selves that they make these perfunctory gestures towards being something else that nobody actually wants them to be or cares if they really are or not

some dude, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:26 (twelve years ago) link

...before he goes back to dropping gems like "I love your ass like Milhouse love Lisa/I love your ass like Ninja Turtles love pizza"

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:27 (twelve years ago) link

I'm confused about jordans argument that rick "big meech" ross is not street rap. Is it because he was a co?

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:42 (twelve years ago) link

j0rdan said "ross is a label creation who has very little basis in the kind of underground -> pop street rap narrative i'm talking about here," which makes perfect sense and isn't really what you're saying he said

some dude, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:45 (twelve years ago) link

i mean obviously it makes sense to mention him in the same breath as the people you mentioned him alongside, but he's also the only one for whom mixtapes account for pretty much 0% of his success

some dude, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:46 (twelve years ago) link

"label creation" is unfair, bcuz a lot of it is ross' own creation. but gtfo here if you're gonna try and sit here and compare wayne & drake's bff w/ concentration camp boosie.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:52 (twelve years ago) link

ASAP Nast is dope

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 03:55 (twelve years ago) link

Lol waynes rise was much closer to boosies though

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 05:25 (twelve years ago) link

well sure but that was a decade and a half ago -- i'm talking about jonas brother weezy

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 05:26 (twelve years ago) link

"this is probably more for the dynamic compression thread but i think the reason I prefer the Gibbs to either the ASAP or LEP albums is because its just such a better-engineered record than either"

Yeah definitely, having said that, Burn One really knows how to produce a track, his craft/sound is so pure, everything he produces is perfectly crisp. Just listening to Peso (Burn One) followed by Bass (Clams) and its so easy to hear the difference in clarity.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 05:45 (twelve years ago) link

If you don't like this, you have no value in life.

otm.

also peso isn't burn one, burn one did do my fav track at the end of the tape tho (the 2nd one he does on the tracklist i forget which)

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:06 (twelve years ago) link

i really like some of the clams casino production on liveloveasap, its a better context for his stuff than most of his other collaborations, or even solo material.

flopson, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:09 (twelve years ago) link

is it okay if i don't want to listen to dom kennedy

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:10 (twelve years ago) link

i actually disagree w/ flopson... the clams sound is so branded now, ASAP's stuff w/o him is much more distinctive

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:10 (twelve years ago) link

wassup is one of my favourites on the tape

flopson, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:12 (twelve years ago) link

Ha, oh. Yeah his 2 on there are standouts I think. Clams has clipping all over his bass, maybe on purpose but I don't feel like the overall aesthetic of his beats match the sound of his beats. I just think if you're gonna go all ott melodramatic with it, then it should sound prestine.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:19 (twelve years ago) link

"is it okay if i don't want to listen to dom kennedy"

Doesn't really matter who raps on that beat tbf.

agree completely

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:21 (twelve years ago) link

asap as a rapper has obvious weaknesses. i find his performance amateurish in some regards; the timbre of his voice is rougher than the smooth pop rap cuts but not quite hard enough when he really spits, neither is his delivery. i felt similarly about mellowype last year. regardless, my favourite moments are the slowest, with airy production. also not sure if he's always perfectly on beat, he sounds a bit sloppy. some of the flows are real strong, i think it's relatively obvious that he has potential

flopson, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:24 (twelve years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxfGk2b_cMU

i prefer cardo's fake clams here to any clams on the asap

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 07:30 (twelve years ago) link

so PRG'z and Jim Jones dropped records today too

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 07:38 (twelve years ago) link

Lol was just checking those.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 07:42 (twelve years ago) link

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 07:43 (twelve years ago) link

Tons of Sen City spots on that Jim Jones tape

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 07:44 (twelve years ago) link

This album cover is unreal
http://prgz.bandcamp.com/album/born-2-ball

The Gibbs, Asap and LEP have pretty cool art. ASAP is totally Stankonia lite though.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 07:47 (twelve years ago) link

one of the things that really stands out to me abt the peso video is that at one pt hes clearly rocking the mid 90s master p look with the glasses & at another point he & his dudes are obviously referencing cash money w/ the shirtless + black headscarf look. as a rap nerd this is what made them seem fresh, they're reviving a look before anyone else really has

more fashion than music there obv

http://rapradar.com/

also want to point out that on rapradar, which is the main hip hop rap blog anyone follows these days (RIP nahright) asap isnt even in the top 5 most popular posts, losing to (somehow) Fat Joe, as well as Gibbs and LEP -- not sure if thats because his was posted latest or by what degree, but i'm saying

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 09:11 (twelve years ago) link

not that he couldnt end up being the most popular once the buzz builds beyond fader-land, but this stuff is just not as big as it seems in our twitterverse yet

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 09:13 (twelve years ago) link

well the biggest rapper in the rap radarsphere is joe budden, so i wouldn't put much stock in it

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 14:26 (twelve years ago) link

gibbs cold day track is fucking dope

google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

i also want to point out how contradictory this is to your original claim that ASAP has the most buzz

clearly buzz is not the same as popularity.
