They probably will update the rogue device sniffing, as the people who have made this work admitted that they had to copy some files from an iPhone 4S to get it running.

sooooooooooo i think i'm pulling the trigger today.

i may have been convinced to get an iMac + iPad. the reason being: friend might sell me a cheap gaming console (which i have never owned), which i could plug in to my sister's display and use for games/movies. which is preferable to sitting at my desk for that stuff (FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS).

q, tho: macrumors is saying that the imac and ipad are due for updates soon. should i even give a shit?

what is apple tv even

cozen, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

IMO everything gets updated all the time; if you continually wait, you will never have yr new machine. If you've identified what you need and you want it now, get it.

xpost -- a handy little thing.

id probably give a shit about the iPad upgrade

max, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:25 (twelve years ago) link

what are the alleged iPad upgrades, btw

if there's nothing listed, I wouldn't worry about it

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

ipad upgrades not likely for at least four months, going by the usual idevice cycle

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

probably a faster processor and a retina display

dayo, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:28 (twelve years ago) link

but yeah smart money's on it not coming out until after christmas

dayo, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:29 (twelve years ago) link

Likely pulling the trigger on an iPad tonight as well, and I never buy anything. Had been using a friend's early-gen iPhone until losing it (:-<) and need to take great photos tomorrow or would wait and order online and save taxes...

your way better (Eazy), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:38 (twelve years ago) link

Okay basically I have an ipad 2 and I use it seriously 800% more than I ever thought I would. The two things that really shit me about it (neither of which can be helped) and therefore put me in the ipad 3 queue on day one are (1) the weight and (2) the low-res screen. The latter encumbers Chinese text – not prohibitive, just annoying. Having said all that, if I were you I would buy an ipad 2 right now.

xp if you want to take great photos, don't buy an ipad.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

Is the camera worse/way-worse than the iPhone?

your way better (Eazy), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:54 (twelve years ago) link

The iPad camera is basically "I guess it has a camera"

mh, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

yeah pretty sure it's a lower quality camera.

I ended up not using my ipad as much as I thought I would, ended up giving it to my parents.

dayo, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

it's not very good for ilxing, awkward to hold for movie watching, games were fun though

dayo, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

The back camera is more-or-less webcam grade and the front camera is even worse. Even if it had a decent camera, it's a very bad shape and size for taking photos.

The portability of the ipad is sort of astounding. You can just slip it in whatever pack you already take around with you. It's not so heavy that you'd really notice it being in there.

eek

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

Ah, shit.

I've been on the fence about whether to get the iPhone for the complete portability (even without getting phone service with it) or the iPad. Taking photos on the fly is good for my work, but so is being able to access media apps like New Yorker...

hmmmmm.

btw i am typing this on my new imac ^_^

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

fukkin migration assistant is going to take 4eva

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

New Yorker app is indeed great, but it's an expensive subscription if you don't already have an ipad.

xxp ^___^

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

btw migration assistant was a good idea, right? like, i'm not shooting myself in the foot by not starting from scratch? cuz i'm not sure how much of what's on my computer will play nicely with Lion, and I'd hate to have a janky machine right off the bat

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

I personally wouldn't bother but my computer is from 2007 so I haven't really had the option.

whoop, up the butt it goes (silby), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

welllll, it's stuff like applications/documents/media, really.

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

that should be smooth I guess? If it were me I would be worrying that it was migrating all the random unixy shit I've installed to random parts of my filesystem over the years; that would actually just make me start off with a janky computer.

whoop, up the butt it goes (silby), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:55 (twelve years ago) link

Migration assistant is superb. This machine is basically the direct descendant of my G4 which started life on OS 9, and apart from some unix settings they fucked up 10.2->10.3 all has been well.

this is precisely what i'm worried about. i've spoken with apple, and rebooted, and it looks like nothing even got moved over?

is there an easy way to check this?

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:50 (twelve years ago) link

also dude basically told me that doing it all manually would be the best bet

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:50 (twelve years ago) link

personally i start from scratch each new machine, copying stuff over manually. i feel like my chi is stronger that way.

caek, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:52 (twelve years ago) link

that is what i'm going to do from here. really hope i didn't already shit it up with that bum migration

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:56 (twelve years ago) link

If you've got a backup of your old stuff you can safely shit up anything.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:57 (twelve years ago) link

wipe and reinstall, it's the only way

dayo, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:57 (twelve years ago) link

plz tell me yr kidding

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:02 (twelve years ago) link

take it back to the shop and ask them to shoot it with a gun

caek, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:04 (twelve years ago) link

you guys are making me nervous

caek, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:05 (twelve years ago) link

caring about "getting the migration right" is so PC, no?

Euler, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:05 (twelve years ago) link

don't forget to repair your permissions

caek, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:06 (twelve years ago) link

i did actually just repair the permissions

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:07 (twelve years ago) link

i actually do copy stuff over manaully, but that says more about me than it does about the OS. just do whatever works gbx

caek, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:07 (twelve years ago) link

lol xp you monster!

caek, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:07 (twelve years ago) link

mostly what i am interested in is knowing what, if anything, got transferred

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:08 (twelve years ago) link

I would bet it just on being files, docs, and preferences

dayo, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:09 (twelve years ago) link

probably also a sense of 'sibling envy'

dayo, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:09 (twelve years ago) link

The "gotta repair permissions after you do everything" people were the bane of the os x world for the last few years

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:20 (twelve years ago) link

Did you create an account on the new computer with the same username, and then attempt to migrate over an existing account?

ROOKIE MISTAKE

It probably created an account parallel to yours named "gbx2" or something.

mh, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:25 (twelve years ago) link

(I have done this multiple times.)
