right, "grassroots" is a weird term. i do think that ASAP has been given a big shortcut to fame... he has the ear of the industry and that can still be a powerful thing. personally i don't know if he's talented enough or if his music is focused enough on being 'pop' for him to be a star etc etc

i am more interested in whether or not rap hype is going to start mirroring indie rock hype -- we'll see tho

this is a total misunderstanding of what i posted. tons of random rappers are from the projects. i thought i made it clear after -- this was w/ a debate where surfboards was like 'theres no narrative to LEP' & i was grounding his story in a specific place, and the story isnt that count was from the ickes but that he was running them, and they have a large place in chicago history much the way queensbridge might in nyc

and king louie is a brand new artist, of course hes 'obscure' -- much as asap rocky is obscure to anyone not on tumblr or in our internet rap music nerd world

in fact, the entire premise of that post is bogus. Max B would have made a much better 'national rapper' prospect than asap, as im sure even ASAP himself would admit, until he took himself out of the equation by getting arrested. id argue on purely musical terms that i think king louie is a much more promising talent than asap, although obviously with the hierarchies the way they are i might just be shouting into the wind

i just mean it's not like there are many convincing alternative as to who else deserves this slice of hype, even the rappers you rep for nowadays are either more low-key & have little or no national exposure, or halfheartedly stanning for meek mill because no one else raps

i dont see whats unconvincing about any of the rappers i rep for, and my enthusiasm for meek mill isn't really halfhearted; i like dreamchasers more than this tape too

the fact is that caramanica's thesis about ASAP being the epitome of New York as universal recipient rather than universal donor was as true / moreso with max b, and that's kind of the angle everyone's taken to with ASAP right?

i mean i like king louie & max b but they're not at a level of recognition/legal status (respectively) where it makes sense to be like 'why asap rocky got a 3m$ deal when a chicago rapper deej discovered like a month ago flounders.' not saying anything will never happen & i hope it does; i think they both make interesting music. but if u do pit asap rocky against rappers with a minimum level of recognition (wale, meek mill, 2 chains etc.) i'd say he deserves the hype

for what its worth, i would not wish ASAP levels of hype on Louie at all. I mean, I would to the extent that I think it would be good for his family to have the money to move out of woodlawn, but in terms of creating a sustained career, he's much better off working on increasing his national fanbase through creating strong relationships with non-media type audiences. so this really isn't about me wishing I was in RNT's position (particularly bad parallel because I am in no way actually invested in Louie's success beyond, as I've said, being right about his worth as an artist; i'm not tying my career to his in any way

i dont think asap rocky stands up to 2chainz or meek mill. I think he has the potential to reach those guys, but he's definitely not at that step. Thats the problem w/ these indie rock blog hype cycles, they're so concerned with being first that they jump the gun on a lot of artists

remember when they were getting hype from NYers, the blog crowd was chasing houston rappers, then hyphy

i'm not sure what your first point means or what it has to do w/ why saigon and papoose and maino and joel ortiz never had popular, sustained careers. as for b, you're right none of those guys were fashion plates, but i don't think "fashion plate" as it pertains to ASAP is a check mark in a box. it's part of a charisma that he has that those other guys didn't, which transcends BRING NY BACK hype.

as for houston rappers and hyphy being chewed up and spit out, you're definitely right and ASAP and his ppl should be concerned about how quickly he will be expected to return on that large investment. far be it from me to tell someone to turn down that much money, but he's put a ton of pressure on himself, certainly by revealing the amount, too.

btw i was watching video from his "mixtape listening party" or w/e and i'm pretty sure ryan leslie was in there wearing a mink. not that that's notable or anything (altho EVERYONE should work with ryan leslie) but it was funny bcuz no one was like "listening party ft x celeb and y celeb" so to see ryan leslie slink by the camera in a mink was p hilarious.

saigon actually has more than a couple dope songs too. his career didnt pan out for other reasons & he was never a media darling but that doesnt make him a less talented artist like you're implying
