Mos Def doesn't make money?

― clear as mud (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, November 1, 2011 5:48 PM (8 minutes ago) Bookmark

i was making a comparison b/w aston kutcher the tech investor and mos def hanging around and big upping these renegade start up rappers (feel free to ban me btw) except mos def doesn't monetarily invest in odd future or asap rocky and as such does not make money off them

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:58 (twelve years ago) link

mmmmmm that makes more sense

google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

flopson's "i wish something was just v popular & we all liked it" misunderstands that lil wayne / t.i. etc were all regional obscurities at one point, to have a sustained career in this industry afaik thats the only way to really do it

― The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 16:21 (1 hour ago) Bookmark

not so sure that was my point; i think it's important to follow regional obscurities who release great music & consider it a hobby of mine. despite the weaknesses i outlined in my post upthread i think asap rocky's aesthetic (both fashion/image & the brand of production he's equally defined by) and strong hooks puts him above dudes like meek mill, 2 chainz ito pop appeal. they are better rappers in many ways and i'm looking forward to their future output, esp 2 chainz, but besides maybe a strong single it's hard to see them having vastly diffrent trajectories than street rappers we've seen slide out of relevance the past few years (gucci, jeezy). i mean i happen to like the asap tape a lot but my argument is more about "if i had 3 million dollars but had to invest it in rap music"

flopson, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

if asap rocky has a career even a fraction as strong as gucci or jeezy's he'll be lucky. i still dont get the comparison. Jeezy was on top for a long time, and unlike Wayne and T.I. never aimed for the straight pop maneuver; and Gucci ethered his own career when he was still ascendant. I don't think there's anything limiting Meek Mill (who I think is better than 2 Chainz) from crossing over.

i dont see how clams casino production & looking like dj quik dressed up as percy miller is a fashion/image run to 'pop appeal.' Its tailor-made for a certain hip niche appeal, and that niche appeal happens to be hot with certain pop stars like Drake, but Weeknd isn't storming the charts either.

i dont even hear 'strong hooks.' purple swag is like a poor man's 'still tippin.'

how many hooks on this record are just a down-pitched voice reciting rap lyrics anyway

(i do think 'peso' has a great hook)

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

at what point was gucci's career ethered...? ice cream cone tattoo? wacka album?

clear as mud (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

just curious, I've never really been into him

clear as mud (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

one of the eight trips he made to prison in the middle of when he was supposed to be promoting an album. also possibly when he no-showed at concerts, or radio interviews, or any of the many probably-substance-related AWOL situations

(eight is a small exaggeration)

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

jewelry selection is the last great tape

flopson, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

i like the hook on kissin pink (lol) a lot

flopson, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

i'm with deej here, nobody knows what the fuck an asap rocky is, except nerds like us.

sisilafami, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think anyone is really debating that. he's also been in the public consciousness for like 3 months, it's not a huge indictment on him

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think ilx can stand for anyone but forks using "wacka". he's, like, the full quotient of representation whereby we do not simply die of embarrassment but soldier on.

lol

That Kreayshawn feature is kinda embarrassing. I think she was born to make GG and nothing more.

Does Asap have a ground-level following in NY?

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:08 (twelve years ago) link

how could he? until 2 mo. ago he had 2 songs

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:10 (twelve years ago) link

I don't see how that precludes anything.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:16 (twelve years ago) link

kreay sounds bad on this, yeah -- beat doesn't work for her

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

And I'm more interested in hearing someone from NY answer that than someone from elsewhere project his assumptions onto them. xp

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

no disrespect to the NY-based posters but i kinda doubt anyone here can speak of 'ground-level following' there vs. media bubble hype

some dude, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:34 (twelve years ago) link

Rev I dunno my understanding of what a ground level phenomenon would be involves months of legwork, doing shows, releasing tapes that build buzz... Whats yours

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 00:45 (twelve years ago) link

hi, i really like the 2 chainz album

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:24 (twelve years ago) link

I was at the show at alife when he opened for Danny brown, before XXX came Out and before ASAP had any press. It was packed.

I was also at the santos show that he headlined. Also packed. Don't remember how much press he had at this point.

He played during some juicy j thing one day I didn't go but supposedly he we t over really well.

I have nothing to do with the "hype cycle" or whatever the fuck. Do with this info whatever you may. such an NYC complex around here it's glaring. Why does a rapper get your goat

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:26 (twelve years ago) link

i do remember reading reports that the crowd went nuts when they brought him out at the dipset reunion, but that's is entirely shocking either

Number None, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:45 (twelve years ago) link

i think every song is out there except the opener w/ diddy which isn't v good

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 November 2011 01:49 (twelve years ago) link
