flames instead of flame is an acceptable variation though -- waka's in the optional pluralization category with joe budden(s) and meek mill(z)

some dude, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 02:29 (twelve years ago) link

ASAP Rocky track-by-track, * track is a highlight

Palace -- Clams' beat sounds all nastily mastered & rocky sounds kind of lost over amorphous beats like this, his rhythmic sense isn't tight enough

*Peso -- probably the best song he'll ever do

Bass -- First example of me getting really tired of the overuse of downtuned vocals for hooks / otherwise, beat is kind of lame

Wassup -- If I was to rep for a Clams beat on this, it would be this one, which is assisted by being a part of a 2:41 second song. Space-yness sounds kinda like the equiv of hanging out under orange sodium lights (dunno if that makes sense). Only part of the beat that sucks is when he does this weird unnecessary hi-hat fill.

*Brand New Guy -- downtuned voice is back, becoming a lame chorus trick. Schoolboy Q is dope on this but sorta makes other rappers on it look bad. Pretty great beat.

Purple Swag Ch 2 -- one of the most boring beats on the record. generic s&c salih williams ripoff ish

Get Lit -- again generic production, downtuned vocals are back again, rapping is dull

*Trilla -- perhaps the best beat on the record. Flows on this work nicely. I hope this gets redone by other rappers though

*Keep It G -- I will never get tired of noirish sax traxx.

Kissin Pink -- too much singing. a bit generic

Houston Old Head -- I know ppl like this but I don't think I can really deal w/ introspective Rocky.

Acid Drip -- no diss in case he's reading but the Soufein3000 beats feel like the most generic on the record

Leaf -- I don't like main attrakionz really, flows on this sound lost. Again, Clams beats dont really work here

*Roll One Up -- One of the record's best beats. Anyone could work on this, Rocky will do

Demons -- too many Clams beats, feel like im in an aural weed coma (in a restless, anxious way)

Out of this World -- I hate this drum sound, dont understand how it became so big (kanye?)

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 05:53 (twelve years ago) link

trilla is the best beat on the record. i legit thought it had to be a straight rip.

ASAP nast can rap

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 November 2011 05:59 (twelve years ago) link

i think deej and i are both in agreement that this tape would be much more interesting/better if you just eliminated clams casino from the equation entirely

"purple swag" is just about to him 1m views on youtube

while i'm a bit underwhelmed by the tape i gotta say this cover art was p ill

fav off that tape

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 07:37 (twelve years ago) link

agree that "trilla" and "peso" are great but while the overall stoned-in-your-bedroom x witch-house-spookiness vibe probably hits the spot in a certain mood it's not something i can get very excited about as a thing? also he CAN'T RAP omg, and it's not even like there's force of character to compensate à la lil b's stream of consciousness moments

lex pretend, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 07:39 (twelve years ago) link

the LEP went for a darker denser street feel than I was expecting, thought it wd have some more pop moves like the last one. there is a good retro vibe to it, like back when gangster rappers yelled about politics in a one dimensional gangster rap way and spelled america with three k's in the middle

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 07:40 (twelve years ago) link

of the recent mixtapes i've been catching up on i quite like the travis porter but kind of wish there were more super-fast bangers like "bring it back" - meek mill's is really great though, liked j0rdan's review of that, and the reema major backs up "i'm the one" pretty effectively

lex pretend, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 07:41 (twelve years ago) link

this was a highlight too
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdfAZ9BlEMM

but I like PacMan hooks & his verse on this (the last one) was p nice
I would say, if you're not feeling these two tracks, you probably will not like this tape. I do wish it was better mastered hopefully the NODJ sounds better :(

surprised i disagree w this because up until i heard this i was decidedly not a big clams casino fan but c'mon the beat on bass? that & wassup are standouts of the first half

flopson, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 07:44 (twelve years ago) link

isnt that the one that's just a stuttered biggie beat

the bigger problem on that track is the endless downtuned vocal chorus

the bo deal will probably get slept on mostly but this track is pretty amazing. ranks up with his classic 'bananas'

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 07:54 (twelve years ago) link

its a gender battle track where the dude is the one trying to get the girl pregnant, kind of a flip of the cliche

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 08:05 (twelve years ago) link

is there a rap song this year with more youtube hits than 'racks' (almost 12 million !!)

tpp, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 09:39 (twelve years ago) link

"Yonkers" and "Gucci Gucci" both have more than twice that i'm afraid

using the patented youtube views metric ASAP is certainly lagging way behind this year's other blog faves

based off 3 listens per tape 2Chainz > ASAP > Freddie Gibbs. I prefer the Travis Porter 'Music Money Magnums' to any of them (don't think that's the most recent Travis Porter tho)

pandemic, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 11:51 (twelve years ago) link

screwed hooks have been all over rap since still tippin deej. u sound a bit like "i don't like how this new rapper uses pieces of other records on the hook, what's up with that?"

zvookster, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 16:32 (twelve years ago) link

Checked out "Tony Story" off the Meek Mill thanks to JOrdan's review. Awesome

Number None, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

You should really have that meek mill imo. It's like 70% the best mixtape this year

And yeah bro I know what a screwed hook is. It just sounds cheap here and more gives feels like a reverse bee gees effect than an actual s&c hook.

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 16:55 (twelve years ago) link

The gibbs is way better than the asap imo

I'm really conflicted abt 2 chainz although it sounds p much as I expected

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 16:57 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the meek mill is excellent. I like the production on freddie gibbs better than asap for sure, it's just he has too many kinda smooth cuts for me, which isn't really my thing, so i prefer the asap cos of the style rather than the quality.

pandemic, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 17:33 (twelve years ago) link

meek mill just has that something about his voice that connects - j0rdan discussed this in his review, it's something that plenty aim for but when someone has it, it's just POW. don't even mind the generic lex luger beats really. what i find interesting is the way he crosses WAKA-style energy with complex narrative without sacrificing either.

is it just me or does he bring the best out of rawse, too? maybe it's just something about how their voices contrast that makes me more amenable to rick ross's elephantine galumphing as a foil to meek's nervous energy.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 17:41 (twelve years ago) link

i feel like codeine cowboy & trap-a-velli 2 > the new one

sisilafami, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 17:46 (twelve years ago) link

zvooks, good catch but i think i was trying to say i thought he was wack
maybe too subtle

btw, i predictably like the roots/krit collabo a lot
