Yeah definitely, just that when you hear a clams song on ASAPs tape right next to another one thats done right, the difference is apparent and distracts from the overall quality of the project.

my biggest problem is that - afaict - clams is total one-trick pony.

is the trick searching Limewire

The Uncanny Frankie Valley (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 4 November 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

i'm no clams stan by any stretch of the imagination but i think he less of a one trick pony and more a guy w/ a "sound". his good beats all sound similar but i don't think they all rely on the same trick.

J0rdan S., Friday, 4 November 2011 23:04 (twelve years ago) link

tbh after whiney said it was basically like PM Dawn beats i can't really hear it any other way

xp i think fresh prob sampled it more than once even, SOS/Jam and Lewis was like his core inspiration for a year or two there. he's moved away from that tho

i love Jeezy's voice. some days i almost feel like he could guest on a High on Fire album

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 November 2011 00:59 (twelve years ago) link

i really like the new gibbs but i'll tell u what, when jeezy's voice hits that record its a charisma/energy explosion

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 01:09 (twelve years ago) link

i spent like 2 hours yesterday just jamming every jeezy song on my ipod

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

if its part of your aesthetic, then make it sound distorted, but then release it in high bitrate so we can determine if its 'aesthetic' or 'laziness' bcuz i highly suspect the latter

― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Friday, November 4, 2011 6:02 PM (4 hours ago)

ha yeah the point is he didn't really have an aesthetic preference as much as he didn't know the difference

i discovered this random comp in my itunes (feat. the jacka, messy marv, husalah etc) and am enjoying it v much

I find this hard to believe tbh. But since he samples random mp3s on limewire, at least some of his sources are likely to be shitty bitrates anyway.

historyyy (prettylikealaindelon), Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:16 (twelve years ago) link

Clams tweet to me is kinda like when Skyler said she was doing Bettiche's (sp?) books in Quicken on Breaking Bad...seems too stupid to be true!

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 November 2011 13:00 (twelve years ago) link

this whole asap rocky thing is basically kreayshawn all over again with deej taking the opposite side of the argument tbh

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 13:52 (twelve years ago) link

deej is playing the role you all cast him in! you made him this way!!11!!!!!

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 November 2011 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

ha al otm

The Reverend, Saturday, 5 November 2011 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

Al thats totally wrong this is more the clipse than kreayahawn

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

i don't see how it has anything to do w/ clipse

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

Critics were unified in their backhanded dismissals of kreays "skills" but the phenomena of her getting 23 mill youtube hits and driving traffic for tons of readers was unavoidable.asap rocky has no more than a mil. hits on any song, big fader features and the internets busiest music critic describing his multitude of influences

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

there isn't even remotely close to the critical fandom for rocky as there were for clipse

you finding one random blog that no one has ever heard of or will ever hear from again calling asap "the nirvana of rap" isn't even remotely close to what was happening w/ the clipse circa 06 -- the whole comparison is just backwards

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

asap has important ppl behind him in the industry and in the upper reaches of the press, but that's about it. neither of those two things was true about the clipse.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

yeah a lot of this convo is about overnight success, lack of groundwork, focus on the rapper's eye-catching image/videos, getting signed off one song and a couple months of hype, things that don't really apply to the clipse

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:09 (twelve years ago) link

Asap rocky is being taken seriously in a way kreay never was. She had an actual hit that eventually made it to radio

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:10 (twelve years ago) link

'taken seriously' is all relative. a lot of doors opened for her very quickly, and a lot of them were in terms of internet/critic attention.

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

The clipse comparison is about the clipse hype during the release of the "got it 4 cheap" stuff, id say its comparable --top-down niche following bcuz they fit the right aesthetic st the right time.

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

A lot of doors opened for her because she drove tons of traffic al! No one gifted her that, it was the video

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

there are some parts of the kreayshawn comparison that don't fit (deej is right about the traffic) BUT there are some similarities in terms of having, like, literally only two songs

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

And we've discussed this but the "critic attention" was almost uniformly negative

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

you act like she should've been received like nas on live at the bbq

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

I dont but lol post

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

still think the closest comparison is odd future but w/e

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

I acted like ppl should stop bending over backwards to talk about how unskilled she was and pretending that "gucci gucci" was some kind of thing being "forced" on us when it ws rlly quite immediate

Asap has never had the same groundswell of support, now he will be that artist that even indie rock critics are voting for at year end time

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:23 (twelve years ago) link

Odd future were the new clipse except they found a big skater audience so they'll be ok after the critics forget about them as a hype cycle phenomenon, while kanye had to rescue pusha t

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

Meanwhile how many of you check for can ox material? No? Before your time?

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

i kinda doubt there's a larger % of skater kids in odd future's fanbase than in a lot of other young rap acts, that's more their image than their audience

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

new pusha sucks btw

sisilafami, Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

i disagree!

sisilafami, Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

sorry didn't see the waka thread

sisilafami, Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

i think there's a good argument to be made that the pusha album is the best major label rap album released this year

of course there's almost literally zero competition, but still
