yeah a lot of this convo is about overnight success, lack of groundwork, focus on the rapper's eye-catching image/videos, getting signed off one song and a couple months of hype, things that don't really apply to the clipse

Asap rocky is being taken seriously in a way kreay never was. She had an actual hit that eventually made it to radio

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:10 (twelve years ago) link

'taken seriously' is all relative. a lot of doors opened for her very quickly, and a lot of them were in terms of internet/critic attention.

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

The clipse comparison is about the clipse hype during the release of the "got it 4 cheap" stuff, id say its comparable --top-down niche following bcuz they fit the right aesthetic st the right time.

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

A lot of doors opened for her because she drove tons of traffic al! No one gifted her that, it was the video

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

there are some parts of the kreayshawn comparison that don't fit (deej is right about the traffic) BUT there are some similarities in terms of having, like, literally only two songs

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

And we've discussed this but the "critic attention" was almost uniformly negative

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

you act like she should've been received like nas on live at the bbq

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

I dont but lol post

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

still think the closest comparison is odd future but w/e

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

I acted like ppl should stop bending over backwards to talk about how unskilled she was and pretending that "gucci gucci" was some kind of thing being "forced" on us when it ws rlly quite immediate

Asap has never had the same groundswell of support, now he will be that artist that even indie rock critics are voting for at year end time

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:23 (twelve years ago) link

Odd future were the new clipse except they found a big skater audience so they'll be ok after the critics forget about them as a hype cycle phenomenon, while kanye had to rescue pusha t

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

Meanwhile how many of you check for can ox material? No? Before your time?

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

i kinda doubt there's a larger % of skater kids in odd future's fanbase than in a lot of other young rap acts, that's more their image than their audience

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

new pusha sucks btw

sisilafami, Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

i disagree!

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

pretty good article on lex luger

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/06/magazine/lex-luger-hip-hop-beat-maker.html?_r=1&ref=music

sisilafami, Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

sorry didn't see the waka thread

sisilafami, Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

i think there's a good argument to be made that the pusha album is the best major label rap album released this year

of course there's almost literally zero competition, but still

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

i'd take watch the throne and even gucci & waka over this.

sisilafami, Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

i forgot about WTT. pusha is better than gucci/waka

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

gucci/waka was p boring imo

johnny crunch, Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

i liked neither WTT nor gucci/waka

sisilafami, Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:43 (twelve years ago) link

pusha is pretty boring imo -- not bad but it is such a "major label rap record" in like every way

many of the beats are just aite

i think gucci/waka is a bit dull but will seem better once we've moved away from that sound

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

pusha t record is like the 2011 equiv of slim thug's 'already platinum' but w/out '3 kings'

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

im rlly curious Al, since u brought up the asap thing again, if u are really feeling this track http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/12731-palace/

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

what most ppl in the industry are wondering isnt if hes odd future or kreay but if he's the next Drake, btw

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Saturday, 5 November 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

(thats old btw)

i'm confused, did you get the idea somewhere that i LIKE asap rocky's music and was defending it?

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 23:58 (twelve years ago) link

were you feeling gucci gucci? i mean when it comes down to it, the real truth of the matter is just that 'gucci gucci' is dope & most of asap's stuff is not

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:10 (twelve years ago) link

imo

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:10 (twelve years ago) link

"gucci gucci" is a better song than "peso" sure, i agree w/ that. i have no idea what point you're trying to make or what you're trying to get me to 'admit' though. again, did you get the impression i was sticking up for rocky?

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

no, but it seemed like u were trying to point out some kind of hypocrisy or w/e in my perspective but it really is as simple as that

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

not hypocrisy, just tedious inability to understand anything beyond the worldview you've set up around your own tastes and agendas

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:17 (twelve years ago) link

idg what puts you above the same thing? or anyone on this board? arent we always expressing these kinds of things? wtf is your point?

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:28 (twelve years ago) link

i dunno it just seems like any parallel i drew between those two artists gets instantly knocked down by the objective truth of "but she's GOOD and he's NOT"

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:32 (twelve years ago) link

instantly? i didnt even mention that until the most recent post; i already made arguments abt audience, style, and relationship w/ media/critics prior to even bringing up quality, which happens to be an aspect u agree w/ me about, mr. nitpicker

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:42 (twelve years ago) link

well i think her song is mildly more listenable/quotable than his, i'm not all SONG OF THE YEAR or w/e

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:44 (twelve years ago) link

al you're just being a dick right now

J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:46 (twelve years ago) link

sorry dudes, i just didn't understand why deej was all "review this asap rocky song for me it's important"

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:47 (twelve years ago) link

i don't actually think you're being a dick, i was just making a callback to the juiceman thread

J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:50 (twelve years ago) link

lmao

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:52 (twelve years ago) link

fwiw he is being a dick & no one asked him for a 'review'

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:55 (twelve years ago) link

i really do actually want to know Al's opinion on this artist & his trajectory & etc., do u think hes the next drake etc., but he'd rather try to clown & nitpick at unimportant bullshit or malign me or my motives or opinions so

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 00:58 (twelve years ago) link

you know asking me to listen to listen to a track posted on gun sounds and offer an immediate opinion of it is a lost cause, man, i don't do that shit

but ok i've got it on -- this is better than "peso" but i dunno maybe years of hearing hundreds of local mixtapes just makes me realize how dime-a-dozen cats like this are. are people REALLY looking at him as having a Drake-type career? that makes zero sense to me, on any level.

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 01:00 (twelve years ago) link

i actually prefer peso but i think something about clams casino beats began and ended with the first few lil b tracks i heard him do

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2011 01:01 (twelve years ago) link

well i don't listen to lil meme so i'm not real familiar with this guy's sound
