iBall

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

haha

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

imo childish gambino is almost worse than mac miller in that his shallow lil wayne imitations and shrill shoutiness is considered to be somehow "good rapping" while mac is more general fun/party stuff. def watch for this dude to claim an important place in the fratrap contiuum

loving the king louie tapes recommended upthread btw, thanks for that

chilli, Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:15 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I'd agree that Mac is better than Childish Gambino, but Mac is almost a carbon copy of Wiz Khalifa for white frat houses... is that any better than being a Lil Wayne imitation?

"I know its hard to hear but I'm a Realest." (rennavate), Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:19 (twelve years ago) link

yes, if only bcuz gambino is aping the lowest point of wayne's career

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:20 (twelve years ago) link

that's the present moment right

The Uncanny Frankie Valley (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

That's what bugs me about Mac, the point in his career when he started using Wiz Khalifa as a blueprint is obvious, and that sort of cynical persona-switching never sits well with me.

"I know its hard to hear but I'm a Realest." (rennavate), Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:25 (twelve years ago) link

Childish gambino gets a lot of love for being a black nerd. I understand that more than the impulse to praise whatever mac miller is supposed to be doing

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:27 (twelve years ago) link

mac miller at least he doesn't have any pretenses about his rap ability, and i think most frat boys can see that. cg's going through all the motions to sound like a rapper in 6'7" or look at me now, but has none of the ability to back it up

chilli, Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

btw not saying artists in those songs display tons of ability, just that they have what're considered "great verses" by casual rap fans

chilli, Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

yes, shakey

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

If I want to listen to a black nerd I'll listen to Busdriver or something.

"I know its hard to hear but I'm a Realest." (rennavate), Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

Busdriver! is he still around? I liked him allright.

The Uncanny Frankie Valley (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, this summer he put out a pretty dope project with Nocando called Flash Bang Grenada.

"I know its hard to hear but I'm a Realest." (rennavate), Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but you can do the 'if i want to see a cool white kid, i'll listen to...' thing too. childish gambino's lane is less overstuffed than mac miller's right now

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Thursday, 10 November 2011 23:58 (twelve years ago) link

haha true that phenomenon is obnoxious. i guess there is a certain subset that sees mm as a genuinely "dope" artist and that's somewhat worrying

chilli, Friday, 11 November 2011 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

and ugh, if mac miller is responsible for the disaster that is "hoodie allen" i might have to reconsider. the name alone makes me physically cringe.

chilli, Friday, 11 November 2011 00:07 (twelve years ago) link

lmao did you guys know that the rapper sam adams is an actual descendant of john adams.

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Friday, 11 November 2011 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

I'd rather listen to Mac and Hoodie fucking Allen. Ugh. Never heard of Sam Adams, but this dude is a Patrick Kane-looking motherfucker.

also that louie cover is v cool

J0rdan S., Friday, 11 November 2011 01:44 (twelve years ago) link

been meaning to listen to this, i first repped for zilla almost exactly a year ago on swag cru -- POX year end song recommendations and havent heard much from him since. i listened to some earlier tapes but they were basically unlistenable, but more bc they were amateurish & very low bitrate than bc of him. i like his 11 yo gotti ft. zed zilla output though

Really liked about half of the Lloyd Banks 'Cold Corner 2' tape. Especially ' young fly flashy'. The Radiohead sample on the title track is a bit O_O tho.

Also turns out Deej was right about the Freddie Gibbs tape being way better than ASAP, really grown on me over the last few days. Still enjoying King Louie above anything else I've checked out over the last month tho, except maybe Young Bleed.

The Uncanny Frankie Valley (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 11 November 2011 16:30 (twelve years ago) link

deej - i LOVE the beat on that legendary traxstar "i ball" song...not crazy about the hook...like the rapper that does a double time flow...other guy does too many grocery bag punchlines but he's ok

but the beat does that crazy super fast bongo drum thing, really really cool

that fred the godson song is great...

im sorry tho i just cant get into g-side as rappers. i like this more than if it was a beat tape like araabmuzik's anyway

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Friday, 11 November 2011 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

'castaway' beat is nice too
