they also did a 12" called 'we want prince' but it's probably best forgotten.

I liked the SH song "Sexual Connection"... if we're talking about that six-track mini-LP. But yeah, "I Need A Freak" could have been their one hit wonder, and it all would have been the same level of Classic!-ness.

On the flip, Mtume's Juicy Fruit album is completely underrated. That entire album is great.

sorry, one release, not "one hit wonder".

So you thought that the song was about equestrian prowess? No...it is about drugs! They are suggesting Coke over Heroin...Which is the better choice? Neither frankly, but still a rockin song...that is all that matters.

So you thought that the song was about equestrian prowess? No...It is about drugs! They are suggesting Coke over Heroin...Which is the better choice? Neither frankly, but still a rockin song...that is all that matters. Only the weak minded are actually pushed to drug use. Those of us who have accepted the possibility of the experimentation and mind expansion of such are the only ones who use such substances with enough self discipline to avoid the obvious addictive effects. Addition is for the weak minded and those who don't have more than a high-school education and wait tables at Denny's.

CJ, Monday, 5 December 2005 01:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I know someone who's gonna wait a loooooong time at Denny's for their "Addition" (it does make sense in French).

People I can recall sampling this include Black Lodge, Dannii Minogue and the Black Eyed Pees.

All the time I was dancing to this in the NCO clubs while I was in the Army in my 20's, I thought this song was about promoting white girls' dating black guys. My oops. That's how naive I am about drugs.

I recently heard a song released by the Black-Eyed Peas titled "My Humps" The music reminded me so much of a song my band did back in the 1980's "I Need a Freak" so I decided to investagate if there was a connection. Much to my suprise it was written by David Payton aka Lynn Tolliver. Lynn Tolliver is the creator of Sexual Harassment. If any of you own an actual copy the the Sexual Harassment EP (the cover has a picture of two women, one is pulling the other one's hair) you'll see my name on the back cover. I'm Dale Jackson drummer and vocals for the band. I had no idea how popular we had become and now I see that our music is being re-released.

Dan Selzer - How in the world did you come across the 12 "We want Prince" we only made a few copies - that one is rare!

Sexual Harassment Releases:
1. I Need a Freak EP - Heat Records (Distributed by Montage Records)
2. I Need A Freak 12" - Heat Records (Distributed by Montage Records)
3. K.I.S.S.I.N.G 12" - Heat Records (Distributed by Montage Records)
4. We Want Prince 12" - Heat Records
5. These Are The Things That I Like 12" - Future Entertainment Records

Dale, assuming you're legit (please no offense if you are, but it's hard to tell these days with rampant anonymity/faking on the net and all), I just played "I Need A Freak" a few weeks ago to a dancefloor in Vancouver.. the song has always been above the radar but recently has been getting rediscovered. If that is your voice, it did the job damn well. :)

dali madison's nut (donut), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:36 (eighteen years ago) link

It gets played a lot in Montreal, too.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:20 (eighteen years ago) link

wow!

hey-it was stirmonster who has the We Want Prince 12", I'd never heard about it and was just joking about how ballsy it is to name a song after an influence like that! I knew Lynn Tolliver was involved because another member of this community, Lauren, found that out somehow, and being from Cleveland, was familiar with him as a Cleveland radio personality of some sort? Had no idea he was behind a Black Eyed Peas song though!

And I know I Need a Freak is classic, but I'm still all about If I Gave You A Party.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

"I need a freak" is on the Andrew Weatherall fabric mix cd.
Presumably you're aware of that Dale.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, Dali I'm legit and no offense taken. I currently live in a surburb of Cleveland, Ohio. Tynn Tolliver is the lead voice that you hear on record. When we performed live I would do the lead parts because he did want to get onstage. We all did vocals on the EP and 12" records. Thanks for your support! - Keep Sexual Harassment Alive!!!!

The group began with Lourdes Figueroa (A latina hottie who later became Mrs. Lynn Tolliver) and Myself. We later became a multi-ethnic band with a little something for everybody. Sexy, Hot and Horney - Good concept..It worked!

I have a couple of the origional radio commericals that aired back then. The audio quality is very poor because they were recorded on cassette tape. I'll try to clean them up and provide a link.

Dale Jackson, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 02:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Stirmonster sorry for the mistake on "We want Prince" I noticed that I credited the wrong person after I posted my comments. We also had a song titled "Sex Drive" that remains unreleased.

When I was tying to find a connection between the Black Eyed Peas "My Humps" and "I Need A Freak" I came across all of these links referencing our band.
I was so suprised and excited. Lynn Tolliver now works for Hot 105.7 FM WHJX in Florida as the Program Director.

I did hear preview of "I Need a Freak" on Andrew Wetherall's Fabric 19 CD. I Like the way it mixes into The Egyptian Lover – Freak-A-Holic track. I fact I e-mailed Andrew thru the Haywire website (www.haywire.co.uk)last nite. He didn't seem to have a site of his own. I also like the "If I Gave you a Party" remix by Syrup. The only other "I Need A Freak" remix release that I knew of was by rapper Too Short awhile back. To be honest with you I don't belive that Lynn is aware of all the remixes either.

Correction: When we performed live I would do the lead parts because he didn't want to get onstage.

Disco (Not Disco) 2 seconded. Not as exciting as the first volume, but unlike the first volume, you can still find it pretty easily (I got a brand-new copy for $9 from Amazon, of all places), and it has some other essential stuff ("Bostich," "Problemes d'Amour," an edit of "Let's Go Swimming," etc.)

i just listened to d(nd)2 yesterday. it's f-ing great. i wouldn't say it's not exciting, it's just a different part of the scene. way more electro. the first one was more about people not usually doing dance or disco doing disco (not disco)

It definitely is exciting, just in a different way. My issue with it is that the classic-to-dud ratio seems to be just a little lower than the first installment (I mean really, Barry Waite?).

It's the light in my eyes
It's perfection and grace

Time out of mind

Yeah, it's a drug reference.

Disco Not Disco 2 was kind of dissapointing when it came out. 2 records instead of 3 and a bunch of the tracks were stuff that most DJs already had, where it felt like 1 unearthed some rarer stuff. They're both essential and I don't leave home without them, of course.

these cds were probably one of my first exposures to this stuff and after the fact, i've found a lot more of the records of stuff on 1 than 2

jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 7 January 2006 20:49 (eighteen years ago) link

They're both good to add your own selections to. Disco Not Disco is a great tag: so many artists from dif subgenres and genres messed with elements of disco, and you can even go back and pretend you're Nicky Siano, and pick "pre"-disco, that works as disco (at least in a Nicky Siano's Legendary The Gallery, LSD=friendly ambience). Like "Marbles," from John McLaughlin's 1969 album Devotion.Kind of a warped "Time Is Tight" and/or "I Can't Turn You Loose." They're basically jamming (edited by Alan Douglas, to McL.'s distress, but it works).

They're back or something:

Danish duo Laid Back -- responsible for the massive, underground dance track "White Horse" that crossed over onto the American pop charts in 1983 -- have announced the forthcoming release of Cosyland on May 22nd, a collection of reworked old tracks, and lost recordings from the famed sessions that put them on the map.

But, of course, there's more to the Laid Back story. Back in the seventies, Tim Stahl and John Guldberg met in a band called The Starbox Band and soon found out that there was a special chemistry between them. They were always the ones left that kept on jamming when band rehearsals ended. After a disaster of a support gig for The Kinks in Copenhagen, people walked out on them... and the band split up. New technology then came: multi-track tape recorders, rhythm boxes and synthesizers, etc. In a backyard downtown Copenhagen, John had set up a small studio where they began jamming together and creating tape recordings. They soon realized that they had created a new sound, a new way of making music. The debut album Laid Back contained their first #1 hit “Maybe I'm Crazy,” and was released in 1981. The next single, “Sunshine Reggae”, was the summer hit of 1982 in Denmark. In the USA, the focus was however on another song, “White Horse”, which became a #1 Dance track and trendsetter with an influence that is still felt today. When their US record company told them “don't come, people think you are black”, Tim and John saw it as the biggest acknowledgement a musician could ever get and stayed away... and now today, “White Horse” is known for being a benchmark cornerstone of the electronic music-making in the Eighties, having been sampled over and over again and becoming a true classic.

Absolute rarities are unearthed on Cosyland, taken from original multi-track archive tapes. Recordings at the source of it all were done in 1981 with brand-new equipment such as a Roland TR-808 rhythm box, a SH-101, a Pro-One monophonic synthesizer and a GR-500 guitar controller-and-synth. Relevant tapes copied from analogue to digital have just an added drumbeat, bass and vocal ahead of mixes. All recordings were improvised for their own pleasure while experimenting with a new technology. Besides, they were mere newcomers and beginners in this context, not knowing to later end up defining a new type of trademark sound. It is something of an archaeology excavation trip, so welcome aboard on a journey to Cosyland.

Still can't get over how bad that sounds.

So, wait, that Deftones album title is about cocaine too? I thought they were chasing sales from the preteen girl demographic.

"White Horse" wasn't much of a hit outside the U.S.. "Bakerman" I first heard on Dom Joly's vanity album, but until now I'd never seen the video... it's fantastic. In five minutes, Lars von Trier makes up for his entire film career.
