New Apple Lust Objects for 2010 and onward

airplay seems to have completely stopped off my MPB, wonder if it still works off my phone or the other computer in the house....

AirPlay works great for me on a pretty new Samsung TV, iPhone and a very old Onkyo amplifier. I don't think I've ever even tried it with my computer. Would be totally pissed if it did after an hour each time.

After five years (!) with my absolutely beloved first generation core duo macbook (my first laptop after fifteen years of apple desktops, and easily the best computer I've ever owned,) I'm finally ready to upgrade. In most respects it's still doing a good job, but the wifi cuts out whenever it gets hot, the battery only gives me 45 minutes, the left speaker's gone and the screen's starting to give signs of flickering. Now, the inability to upgrade to lion and a payrise has pushed me over the edge. So.

I know the issue of 13inch pro vs air has been discussed a bit already upthread, and I'm pretty positive an air would make more sense for me (I want an ssd, don't give a shit about the optical drive, like the idea of a higher screen resolution and the increased portability is a happy bonus.) The one thing that's given me a tiny pause for thought is the ram. This might sound a bit stupid right now, but I wonder if the hardwired 4gb will feel paltry in three years' time. I don't have particularly dazzling system reqs; beyond the obvious web/mail/vlc/itunes/office stuff, I tinker a bit in photoshop and keep photos in lightroom. And that's pretty much it. This probably isn't something I need to worry about, is it..?

upgrading to 8GB really made a difference with aperture - haven't noticed much else tbh. lightroom is supposedly much leaner, right?

with the price of RAM these days I wouldn't be surprised if 8GB were introduced as standard on higher end models. sucks that you can't BTO 8GB of RAM

Haven't tried aperture but lightroom is usable (but not great) on my current machine. Yeah that's something to think about too I guess - feel like I'd be more upset if in three month's time a new machine came out with a small processor iteration but double the ram than if it was an ivy bridge machine with the same amount. 4gb just seems oddly small for the max possible configuration on the highest-end air.

But I'm aware this might be a problem of my perception from years of "a ram upgrade is the single best thing you can do for your computer" rather than any grounding in reality..

(Which also makes me wonder - would I feel any real benefit in paying an extra 85 quid for the i7 over the i5?)

probably not - increased speeds are felt at the extremes, yeah? not in day to day use

otoh if you are a "once every 5 years guy" you could justify it by saying, hey 85 quid over 5 years isn't a lot. I haven't regretted getting the middle of the road option back when I bought my mbp. I mean, you get used to it.

I definitely intend to keep this one for a similar amount of time, yeah. When I got the '06 macbook I went for the 2ghz core duo for that reason. Of course having never experienced the slightly lower-chipped one I've no idea if it's ever made a difference or not. And (circular logic time) this is I suppose the thinking that has me a bit worried about ram. Hrm.

Okay so here's a question -- my gf's iPad (first gen) is running iOS5 without a worry but she's noticed something with Photos that is leaving her a little frustrated: she'd like to prioritize her self-created folders for events and remove (hide/minimize/delete) those she doesn't need like 'last import' and 'saved photos.' I'm guessing you can't exactly do that in full but is there some way to do that in Photos for iPad or should she go for another photo app entirely?

I think you can choose which folders to sink going through the Photos tab of iTunes's iPad section (like when you plug it in). Don't know if this can be done through iCloud.

you attach a little crank to that thing and then turn it around a hundred times and your laptop turns on -- it's a neat little security feature imo

I know Apple gets praised for hardware design, but when seeing how incredibly... wrong.. some other designs are it's worth giving them some credit. I was in a conference room last week next to a guy with a HP laptop that had what looked like screws sticking out of the top of the screen. It was part of the latching mechanism and there were corresponding holes in the base below the trackpad. I don't know how you get to the part of the design process where having things sticking nearly a quarter inch out of the top of the laptop above your screen seems like a good idea.

having a notification center + imessage on my mac just makes me thing im going to get about a million redundant alerts on both my phone and computer

I don't really need to merge IM services, but getting iMessages on the desktop could be useful. I skipped Snow Leopard anyway...

I probably won't update; I really don't want my computer acting more and more like my phone.

More immediately interested in the run-up to Ivy Bridge chips from Intel later in the year as well as the wider use of Thunderbolt -- I'm pretty well due to get a new Mac this fall. (Still going desktop as well; if I ever do get a laptop it'll just be an iPad -- and I am thinking about the iPad 3...)

Very curious about this March announcement coming up. iPad 3 seems to be pretty likely, but I'm very curious about the rumors that the MacBook Air/MacBook Pro lines being merged. A 15" MBA would be pretty fantastic for me
