think I rolled out "Ultima Underworld II is older and better and better at three-dee than Doom" on some ILG challops thread, feel a bit dirty now I've read the same thing in the Edge review

though they compared it to UW1 - "where's the genuine 3D (look up and down) of Ultima Underworld" - which doesn't work as well because the UW1 3D engine is rubbish and looking up and down causes horrible nauseating fisheye distortion

and also there is a bug in UW1 where it randomly starts corrupting your inventory, which is not cool when you've finally gathered your 6 magic items to open a door or w/e and trog all the way to the door and half of them have disappeared or turned into something else

tl;dr, don't play Ultima Underworld I, play Ultima Underworld II. or Doom, if you must

See, bugs and unfinishability and all, I loved UW1 as a kid - just played the hell out of it. I can still hear half the sound effects in my head. UW2 never took hold of me at all, I wasn't into the premise and the whole "lots of little world" things just made it feel cheap and atomized.

tbf I played UW2 first and UW1 not for some years afterwards; if I had played them in the order they came out I would probably feel the same

(but I loved the other worlds of UW2! the vastness, the alien-ness, the marvelling at the remains of disappeared civilisations. it's like the different levels of UW1 but taken further and weirder and huger)
