Oblivion might be a taste thing. Buy it second-hand.

Braid looks interesting - good to see there''s still such a thing as a 2-d platformer on a highspec console.

any news about a silent hill game for 360?

the next grozart, Monday, 5 January 2009 10:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Braid is beautiful, but I had to go to youtube to solve many puzzles - but oddly this didn't harsh my mellow at all...

Psychonauts works fine as a download from XBOX LIVE i think...

ZUMA slays as a puzzle...

it's like dude you dont' even know that cat, it might be an asshole (stevie), Monday, 5 January 2009 11:17 (fifteen years ago) link

i tried playing Mass Effect but just didn't "get" it. i guess i prefer JRPGs.
Braid is an amazing game, but pretty short and (for me anyway) has zero replay value.
Psychonauts is one of the best 3D platformers ever made, get it!

zappi, Monday, 5 January 2009 11:56 (fifteen years ago) link

grozart - there are some more downloadable platforming games (with demos), for instance Bionic Commando Rearmed, MegaMan 9 and N+

There already is a Silent Hill game for the 360, called Homecoming I think. Supposed to be okay. Condemned 1 & 2 is also probably similiar in feel.

A few more non-shooting things games that come to mind are Civilization Revolution, Viva Pinata & Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts (haven't played these myself). People seem to like the downloadable board games too, like Catan.

Finally Geometry Wars 2, Ikaruga and Rez HD are games everybody should play.

is left 4 dead coming out on ps3 or is it exclusively for xbox 4 ever

choomette (sunny successor), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Seem to remember Silent Hill: Homecoming getting pretty dire reviews. I dug condemed, but the story isn't all that compelling really.

Bioshock really would be a good way to go as far as getting story/environment heavy.

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Silent Hill got average reviews...
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/silenthill5?q=homecoming%20silent

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 5 January 2009 18:06 (fifteen years ago) link

i dont know, metacritic scores tend to be fairly top-heavy (like game review scores in general), to me a 72 on metacritic is not a good sign at all.

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Monday, 5 January 2009 18:34 (fifteen years ago) link

72 is average on metacritic. like it's the median i think. that or 71 or 70.

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Monday, 5 January 2009 21:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Psychonauts is one of the best 3D platformers ever made, get it!

The irony here being that the platforming in it is not very well done, but the rest of the game (story, characters, environments) are so great it pushes it all overwhelmingly into the realm of good.

eight years pass...

i decided not to bother buying a new console because it's a bunch of money that will be better towards something like going home to scotland on vacation or whatever so i've dusted down my old xbox 360 and have started buying games i see in second-hand stores.

so far my haul is a grand total of 2 games which i enjoy but will not keep me going for very long:

tiger woods pga tour '12: road to the masters
mirrors edge

so, my question is: please suggest good single-player games for this hell console (there are some good suggestions in the thread already).

Seconding...gonna rescue mine from the closet for a couple days next week while the family’s away. I only have gta v which will tide me over but could use at least one other.

How to buy though? Can you download direct from the Xbox store? Any other avenues now that half.com is dead? I guess a local GameStop...

calstars, Tuesday, 19 December 2017 12:38 (six years ago) link

I think a massive proportion of my Xbox 360 time was spent on the Skate series and Fallout (3 and New Vegas). A perhaps controversial suggestion would be 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, which was far more fun than it had any right to be. There are loads of 'big name' games from then that I expect would be cheap - Assassin's Creed series, Batman Arkham Asylum, Borderlands/2, Gears of War series. I expect stuff like GTA and Red Dead Redemption are holding their value in Gamestop and the likes, but try eBay. You'll often find "job lots" on eBay with a good cross-section of the big-name games.

Was playing with mine for the first time in years the other week while we were staying at a friend's flat without wi-fi. Found Just Cause 2 to be a godsend, you can just jump in, fuck shit up and get out with no muss or fuss.

Also the pre: Paradise Burnouts are lots of fun too.

I've been very tempted to restart Fallout 3/New Vegas again, but I have a kid now, so there's just no way.

i think, and i might be wrong, that you have to have a paid xbox live subscription to download games. i have just been looking in thrift stores and the like where there are usually 360 games, but the pickings are usually slim.

GTA V has really held its value because of GTA online i guess.

I definitely will look out for Dark Souls, the later Skate games (I only played the first one), Borderlands, Dark Souls, Just Cause 2. These are all great suggestions. I have played and/or completed everything else suggested. thanks!

For any console you can play Just Cause 2 on, my default recommendation is always going to be Just Cause 2.

the later Skate games (I only played the first one),

2 is good, 3 is bad imo

FWIW, though, I have probably derived more laughter from Skate 3 glitch videos than from any other single cultural object. It's a marvel of brokenness.

Far Cry 3 is awesome (if you haven't already played it)! Civilization Revolution is a total time suck if you're into RTS games.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 12:50 (six years ago) link

Almost forgot! Splinter Cell: Blacklist was so great, and kind of overlooked due to it coming out in the dying days of the console (2013); it's my favorite in the series, and much better than Conviction.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 12:52 (six years ago) link

I should mention that I didn't even play SC:B until a year or so ago. It holds up.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 12:53 (six years ago) link

I slept on the Splinter Cell games way too long because, y'know, Tom Clancy. But even the early ones (which I only played for the first time a year or two ago) are good stuff.

Ooey Gooey Fresh and Frothy (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 13:01 (six years ago) link

Just ordered Splinter Cell for $6 on eBay

calstars, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 15:39 (six years ago) link

oh yeah I've never played any of the SC games but i love stealth.

remembered my bro had sent me an amazon gift card for $50 canadian a while back so just bought Burnout Paradise and GTA:V second-hand. hope they arrive soon because I'm off work all next week

I'm only keeping my 360 around in case I want to play Dark Souls again. But if they come out with a PS4 remaster, it is gone.

calstars, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 21:00 (six years ago) link

I just couldn't get into Burnout Paradise. I loved the two previous incarnations to absolute death but never found my Paradise groove. Could you still play Crash "races"? I could never seem to find them.

Re : Dark Souls, from what I've read, it seems very long/hardcore RPG.
Is it ? Since I'm not AT ALL a RPG person, I'm not sure I would appreciate it...

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 21 December 2017 11:04 (six years ago) link

it's definitely hardcore but RPG doesn't really do it justice. Dungeon crawler is the best description I guess

i watched Limmy livestream Dark Souls 3 once and it just looked really boring to me and awful. I understand everyone loves it though and that this is the wrong opinion

khat person (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 21 December 2017 17:42 (six years ago) link

It's an action rpg with the emphasis on action, I would say. The mechanics make it way more fun and interesting to me than trad rpgs. Main RPG elements have to do with modifying your character and weapon stats as you go. The big improvement over RPGs is not having to listen to anyone talk ever, if you don't want to.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 21 December 2017 17:43 (six years ago) link

Dark Souls and DS3 have become my favorite games ever though, and I still play DS3 every week ('invading' other players' worlds, which is sort of the meta-game), so I'm biased. Always happy to talk about them though (although not irl, because that would be embarrassing).

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 21 December 2017 19:55 (six years ago) link

Thanks for the Dark Souls descriptions !
Well, I think it's just not for me...
As for old 360 games I still play (beside sports) I have started the AC:Black Sails lately. Play it very occasionally but it's nice.
I prefer the ones where you can just enjoy the sightseeing in old cities, though !

^ Portal 2 is one I never got to. I'm usually into puzzlers besides the two Playdead ones, but I should make an exception for this one.

calstars, Friday, 22 December 2017 18:26 (six years ago) link

Portal 2 has a great co-op multiplayer that wouldn't really work as well on PC imo but the single player would be good on PC.

Portal 2 (and Portal, if you can get your hands on the Orange Box) is one of the greatest games ever created by humans.

paradise isn't all that great but it's pretty good for what I'm looking for, i.e. I'm only rarely able to sit down for a proper session of a video game whereas paradise is super arcadey and has the open world element so it's fun just to pick up drive around a bit, do a race or two, then turn the console off.

i accidentally purchased GTAIV instead of V online ;_; replaying 4 and, much like GTA3 vs. Vice City and San Andreas, it just pales in comparison to GTAV

i had played it when it came out and was somewhat disappointed in it, but i think the excitement i had regarding its release as well as what was, at the time, the significant improvement in graphics over earlier iterations gave me some goodwill towards it that made me more forgiving. GTAV is just so much better.

khat person (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link

IV is so joyless. Although the later DLC missions were great, esp Gay Tony.

"Taste's very strange!" (stevie), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:04 (six years ago) link

TBRR, I don't think I've ever really enjoyed playing the various GTAs as anything other than mayhem simulators with no set objectives.

i wasn't hugely fond of the lost and the damned DLC purely because it meant riding on those damn harley davidson bikes that handled corners so poorly
