GERRY READ! favourite new music of 2012 so far - that photonz track really good too - loved Aquarian Ball from a few year ago but had always sort of assumed it was a total one off

oh yeah, meant to say i'm utterly addicted to Terror Danjah's "You Make Me Feel".

i quite like it but it's kind of lol how terror danjah gave a 5-year-old track to hyperdub. it was originally on this comp

Yeah I kinda like that.

Guido stuck it in his fact mix the other day too: http://www.factmag.com/2012/01/30/fact-mix-314-guido/

Well nice, can't get enough Guido.

I didn't know that Terror track was an oldie, I never coped that comp. It deserves another outing to be fair.

that Joker remix is so out there. i like all the individual pieces, might need to listen to it a few more times to see if they all fit together

Tri Angle are really hit'n'miss. They do have a way with hype tho. So its no suprise they signed Evian Christ and Vessel recently. Vessel is the hit...

I love this remix. Feels like an early contender for 'best of 2012.' Great male vocal bout phones and so forth w very cool sample work and bassline.

Any impressions on the new Preditah EP? I like some of the sounds so far, but it's a bit uneventful for me.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

"Circles" is the best of the bunch, I'd say.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

Circles is a banger, been waiting an age for that to hit wax.

Objekt Cactus just dropped, it's a big'un.

finding "cactus" sort of a bitch to mix with, not sure what i'm doing wrong here. is it just me or is the last third totally wonky?

the late great, Monday, 20 February 2012 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

also why is livity sound vinyl-only, why peverelist, why

the late great, Monday, 20 February 2012 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

just listened to "cactus", pretty dope. it's really syncopated but it's all quantized + in time. i can imagine it would be hard to beatmatch with though.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Monday, 20 February 2012 20:15 (twelve years ago) link

it's in time but i think it adds a tiny rest at each drop so you can't just step away from it.

but yeah, what i meant was that i find the syncopation really hard to deal with, the first drop sounds pretty good with whatever (i like it under 4x4) but the two sections after don't. but then heavily swung stuff (like trad dubstep) also sounds weird in those two sections, i have to mix it like a 1/4 or 1/2-beat off and even then it sounds weird.

the late great, Monday, 20 February 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

maybe it's because the last two sections have that syncopated kick that anticipates beat 4, i could see that getting muddy over 4-on-the-floor.

I guess here's as good a place to ask as any - Is drum'n'bass dead in the water, or what? I'm always hearing about other styles of bass music these days, and hardly ever d'n'b, so I assume there isn't a lot happening any more, but there must be, right?

Alexandre Dumbass (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

footwork is the new d&b iirc

40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

d&b seems to be valued as an influence or element these days, but not as a genre

40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 17:04 (twelve years ago) link

i guess i heard some stuff last year about dbridge/instra:mental and the "drum & bass revival", but the tracks i checked out were really boring.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

the instra:mental album was more 4/4 oriented too. and very boring.

Alexandre Dumbass (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

Hospital Records nights round my way get more ppl in than any other dance events I can think of

Sylv_ebanks (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

This is the thing, because round my way I hear of a lot of d'n'b (and garage) nights, and they seem ever-popular, but it's not something I read about much on RDP or on the "trendier" part of the web.

Some tracks...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO-I_Et15dI

http://soundcloud.com/brey/brey-brasil-ep-sampler

Thats not related to the d'n'b Q mind, I really have no idea whats going on over that way bar the odd Non Plus+ or Jack Sparrow diversion to higher tempos. Rockwell & Untold did a track last year which wasn't bad: http://soundcloud.com/critical-music/rockwell-v-untold-rekohu-sunrise

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

i was going to say, drum and bass still seems really popular, given that every third or fourth fabric mix is still a drum and bass mix, but i haven't heard very much interesting stuff at the traditional 160 bpm tempo aside from ROCKWELL, who basically just sounds like an update on the classic certificate 18 steel-edged roller sound

― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, February 28, 2012 9:04 AM Bookmark

Yeah, this seems about right. Of course, dnb nights are still popular, but it hasn't really been considered on the cutting edge for about 15 years now. I did like the Rockwell EP from last year. I think getting away from the Amen break and taking influence from juke was a good look for him. I'm not really familiar with his background though.

I don't go to dnb nights, is it usually an older crowd there?

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

last year (or maybe even longer ago) i heard some new track that was based on uptempo live breaks and had this huge synth build, it sounded really fresh. i can remember what it sounds like but don't have the slightest clue who it was. almost want to say FaltyDL but i don't think that's right.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 21:50 (twelve years ago) link

That Objekt track is a mad one to mix yeah. Its just swung, broken and fuck'd tho. Its all on one tempo and all that. You just have to catch it right.

In other news...

This is killing me: the song featured in last week's Dusk & Blackdown Rinse mix that samples The Breakfast Club - "Well, if you say you haven't, you're a prude. If you say you have you're a slut. It's a trap. You want to but you can't, and when you do you wish you didn't, right?" Anybody? Thanks.

viborg, Saturday, 3 March 2012 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

I'm really enjoying that Scuba album but it seems to be pandering directly to the people who claimed dubstep was really just nu-skool breaks all along, the whole thing is so late 90s I keep expecting it to come with a subscription to Jockey Slut. Very enjoyable though.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 4 March 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

i don't dislike the scuba album (certainly not as much as some seem to) but it's like, i heard and loved better big-room electrohouse the first time round so ehhhh

lex pretend, Sunday, 4 March 2012 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

It feels more 90s maximalism than big room electrohouse to me, although that was borrowing pretty heavily from 90s maximalist crossover dance in the first place.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Monday, 5 March 2012 08:37 (twelve years ago) link

I've only heard 'Hope', and yeah I love it. I don't really care whether it's dubstep or whatever. It does have a bit of an Underworld (not sure, someone like that?) vibe, but I don't see it as a bad thing.

I was actually popping my head in to say that Burial's 'Kindred' was quietly soundtracking my weekend and boy, I'm pretty sure it's the most affecting thing he's ever done.

Alexandre Dumbass (dog latin), Monday, 5 March 2012 10:23 (twelve years ago) link

Scuba album is bad. Came at it overflowing with good faith but its done nothing for me. Prog breaks were manky in 2001, i dont want a rewind. Doesnt even have the production values that made some of it bearable.

straightola, Monday, 5 March 2012 17:59 (twelve years ago) link

i've never been too crazy about scuba - that album cover screams disaster, though. cross-reference with:

http://www.ifmusic.co.uk/images/product_images/guycelledgeraldtoallthings.jpg

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41JX2EeGMrL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

the late great, Monday, 5 March 2012 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

i don't even really like his mixes that much - the ostgut ton one is too subtle and grey, the dj kicks is somehow simultaneously hectic and bland, like "de9: closer to the edit" for the dubstep set

those first tracks, like "harpoon", were sort of brilliant in the pre-"midnight request line" era but since then it's been a whole lot of meh

i don't like the idea of splitting techno / house and partisans anymore

the late great, Saturday, 19 January 2013 17:37 (eleven years ago) link

it seems insular

the late great, Saturday, 19 January 2013 17:37 (eleven years ago) link

When I started the first partisans thread I wanted it to be for everything, then a separate thread was requested. So its fine by me.

I'm fighting a perverse desire to start a rolling EDM thread.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 January 2013 14:00 (eleven years ago) link

The finest in frat-house, bro-step and neon synth puke only.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 January 2013 14:02 (eleven years ago) link

If I recall there were originally impassioned pleas to merge the bobbins and partisans thread (since it is, y'know, pointless segregation), but the ILM massive (appropriately being dance music partisans about it) weren't having it.

Anyways, I just need somewhere to post this!

Since I'm the creator of bobbins 2013 thread, I declare that you can post "partisan stuff" there. No need to make a new thread.
