NO MARY DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE YALIE SHE'S GOT A KNIFE!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

(this is esp. funny since the Yalies I knew were among the meekest people I have met in my life)

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

(a Yale prof was stabbed to death on campus in the 80s)

Whereas at some other schools the students just kill their roommates.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

like that one chick at Harvard who stabbed her roommate?

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 22:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's the one called Sickler's and they drink martinis and her date eats frog legs and she has a chicken sandwich. Is that restaurant around?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

h: That's whom I had in mind.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Sickler's may have been a stand-in for Mory's, but I could be totally wrong as I don't recall where I heard that.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well in any case it's always fun to go to an old diner and pretend you're in a Salinger story. (NB: This explains the Wes Anderson ouevre.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well Mary could stay in NEw York and go to Grand Central and do that.

Friends don't let friends visit New Haven.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I repeat. I have been reading too many (too many) telexes.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, that could work. Sickler's is a strange name for a rest. I hope we don't run into any of those "Sarah Lawrence-Bennington types."

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boy, if you think New Haven is bad, try visiting some of the other towns on the bus route from NY to Middletown, Connecticut. Meriden and Bridgeport, f'rinstance.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mory's is known to me only for the Whiffenpoofs song Joe quoted and I'm okay with that.

I think all the small towns in Connecticut are really nice and all the "cities" really suck.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

We can take the ferry to Bridgeport! (Am. what's your CT connection?)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm mostly joking anyway. I'm sure the Centre for British Art is very nice.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mary: ...

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll bring you a postcard - make sure not to send this one away:)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Does anyone besides me know that old Folkways record where feminist collectives from New Haven and Chicago play terrible blues rawk?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

The only New Haven bands I can think of are the Saucers and Dumptruck, but those are a long time gone and there must be several thousand others.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Artie Shaw's from NH.

There were lots of New Haven doo wop groups, but um I'm forgetting the names.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ugh! New Haven is home to crap like Miracle Legion and the Butterflies of Love. Reason alone to destroy it!

I don't like New Haven, even though my mum went to Yale and I spent 3 years coming up with excuses not to have to visit her. ;-)

kate, Friday, 28 February 2003 23:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

To be fair my affection for New Haven is all tied up in nostalgia of the most unhealthy kind.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Do tell . . .

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe not "most unhealty." Just plain old unhealthy. Er, nothing interesting, I shouldn't have teased.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

does it involve bondage and co-eds?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

aw, I haven't thought about Dumptruck for a while.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

The only interesting story I have about New Haven involves my car getting busted into while attending a rock shoe at Yale. Noting that I've never visited any of the museums around the campus says more about me being a lazy boob than about the city sucking ass.

But, yeah, there's ... stuff. (And the movie theatre is right next to the Barnes & Noble co-op, isn't it?)

New Haven bands worth a damn right about now = I dunno. Once upon a time, there was 33.3 and the One AM Radio, but they skedaddled / reconfigured (and, while I like them both plenty, they aren't very "rocking") (the Positive-Negative Men rocked in a sub-Devo way, but damned if I know what happened to them) (& there was that rockin' post-rock quartet that used to be called Cassius, but renamed). Kate has no right to slag off the Butterflies or Miracle Legion, though.

And note that the best small towns to visit in CT (from what I can gather) are found on the borders of the state, or thereabouts.

I still haven't gone. I may wait for fall semester to start. Rory should be starting school by then.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 October 2003 03:05 (twenty years ago) link

How do I get from the train station to the campus (walking)? Should I just ask a nice Yalie to show me the way?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 October 2003 03:17 (twenty years ago) link

State Street Station (one of two) is at 259 State Street between Chapel and Court Streets. This map suggests that you walk (West?) on Chapel 2 blocks and hit the Green, and two blocks more gets you the Quad.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 October 2003 03:52 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks Gabnab you are a prince. A nob. That should lead right to both of the art musuems on Chapel St. (which are of course closed on Mon.) leading me to put off my trip a bit longer.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 October 2003 04:11 (twenty years ago) link

Take a cab from the train station to the Old Campus or to Cross Campus (named for someone named "Cross" not because it forms a cross in the middle of the campus). The walk from the station is depressing and a waste of energy and not a great idea at night. In the daytime it's fine, but it will just make you want to turn around and get back on the train.

No one's mentioned Grove Street Cemetery, totally cool, spooky graveyard with the motto on the gate, "The Dead Shall Be Raised." Referring to the Grateful Dead, of course, depending on whom you ask. You may not be able to get into the cemetery anymore, but it's worth a climb over the wall!

Walk through Sterling Library. A Cathedral to books.

Mory's is actually a private eating club--even though it tastes like a diner. You probably wouldn't have much trouble getting someone to take you in though, but then they'd have to pay for you because Mory's doesn't take money. Everything goes on an account.

Skottie, Monday, 20 October 2003 05:12 (twenty years ago) link

I want to hear more abou Daver's rock shoe. I imagine the checkered Vans popularized by Sean Penn in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High".

Alas it is true I mistakenly attributed home-town status of the brothers Ween to New Haven when they are in New Hopeites. Blaspheme!

REVIVE!

I'm posting this right now from Sterling Library, about to go find some of that famous NH pizza after a dizzying number of hours poring over old letters in loopy handwriting. This library truly is a cathedral to books (and manuscripts, which is why I'm here).

FAB? Anyone fancy a breakfast? Meet me at The Doodle at 8 a.m. (sharp!) tomorrow morning (Thursday)!

Hi Maria! I'm your husband! I would eat breakfast with you, but I'm on an island with the baby. We ogled girls gone wild at the beach all day. Or, um, I did. Rufus just sat in the stroller. Speaking of Geronimo's skull, too bad you probably won't have time to hang out at Sachem's Head. You could say hello to my sister and all my other dead relatives. Love you. Don't hurt your eyes reading too much.

Hi Maria! I'm your husband!

Now I imagine Scott greeting her every day with this when she wakes up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I gave up on Sally's after waiting at least an hour (the line at Pepe's was even longer) and settled for Yorkside, which was in no way disappointing, perhaps qualified by my hunger level. How do others rank it among the second tier places?

The walk there is kind of long, taking you across the West River, which looks rather nice in the dark, but the 80-year-old home of the New Haven County Cutters is a pretty great destination.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 August 2004 02:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I was in New HAven on Saturday at Ikea. I bought a coffee table.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:58 (nineteen years ago) link

the only pizza i had at new haven was at a place where the drunken owner kept making passes at my friends by saying, "hey, if the dude you with is gay, maybe you guys come over here." but he gave us free pizza.

i've been dreaming about new haven a lot lately. i miss it.

i would totally be down for a new haven Fancy-a-Breakfast, only i'm in the midwest. shame.

That's cool. I can't judge. I'd be lost w/o the Rave megaplex out there, and my partner practically lives at BJ's.

went there recently and had a good time. maria's sister graduated from YDS and we hung out all day at the div school and acted like we owned the place. then we ate our weight at frank pepe and went home! the perfect new haven experience.
