cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:22 (nineteen years ago) link

there is an insert? hah, let me look.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:22 (nineteen years ago) link

lyric sheet!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:23 (nineteen years ago) link

is this out in the states yet? the keyboardist is somewhat hot.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:25 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't think it comes out int he states until januvary.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:26 (nineteen years ago) link

No US release until the new year. I had to splurge on the Canadian import ($20 US at Amoeba).

In other news I just found out there is a video for "Elevator Love Letter" and that MuchMusic has been playing "Ageless Beauty"!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:33 (nineteen years ago) link

what's the video like?

I think "your ex lover is dead" and "reunion" and "the first five times" are my immediate faves. It's definitely more rambunctious then Heart. (I quietly and selfishly hope they never get too political.)

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 18 November 2004 03:21 (nineteen years ago) link

What exactly is "GAY" about it?

come on spencer. admittedly, stars is kinda gay

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 18 November 2004 03:28 (nineteen years ago) link

totally gay!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 18 November 2004 05:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I love 'Sleep Tonight', 'What I'm Trying To Say', and the first three songs most. 'Sleep Tonight' and 'Ageless Beauty' are way more MBV than anything they've done before, which is a nice direction for them.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 18 November 2004 06:26 (nineteen years ago) link

the female vocals allow for that last hetero shred to shine thourgh. And I love when the girl first cracks into the new album.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Still looking forward to Amy Millan solo! I'll try to get some inside info!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 November 2004 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I've recently heard the album but not yet absorbed it. It is at least as good as "Heart" but again, I haven't really sat down with it. Also, I've seen the video for "Ageless Beauty" (otherwise known as this year's "Elevator Love Letter") and I've in love with Amy Millan. Again. For the twelveth time. This year. Am I sick?

earinfections (Nick Twisp), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 22:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I like 'The Big Fight.'

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 22:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Album seems front-loaded to me too.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 22:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Not to me. Quality all the way through. Or I should say, it's not like the later half tracks are filler or anything.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 22:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm a bit dissapointed about the album. It's funny that I kind of want to like Stars but the more I listen to them, the least I like them. I've seen them live twice and they're pretty good though.

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 22:29 (nineteen years ago) link

not front loaded at all. the last song is a TEARER.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 22:30 (nineteen years ago) link

four weeks pass...
heart is more cohesive then 'syof' but has enough good tracks on it

anyway, here's a pic of some geek who met Torquil in Montreal last weekend! (photo credit: felicity redwell. Torque said they'd be in the nyc come march.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 15:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought this was going to be some sort of new game show, for wannabe celebrities for whom merely being forced to live in the Australian outback and eat raw, maggot-infested koala abortions while suspended upside down by their heels from a helicopter above a slimy pit filled with crocodiles whilst rats gnaw at their genitals on national telly for a couple of weeks just isn't enough.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 15:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I was rather hoping that Bono, Phil Collins and Sting were amongst the contestants for the first series

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 15:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Agreed with guy upthread: album of the year, slightly edging out the Blood Brothers. Shame you folks down south don't get it til February.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

it is going to be HUGE. just wait and see. Ageless Beauty will be soundtracking movie promos by the summer.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 23 December 2004 01:42 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm not just some guy upthread.. i have a name.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 23 December 2004 01:54 (nineteen years ago) link

you hurt up-thread guy's feelings.

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Thursday, 23 December 2004 02:11 (nineteen years ago) link

And yeah, this is a really good album.

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Thursday, 23 December 2004 02:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Please, stop using my good name.

Cheers!

Guy Upthread (mcutt), Thursday, 23 December 2004 02:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Ok, I can't stand it anymore. There is no US release for this thing until March 2005. I'm unwilling (and too poor) to go to amazon.ca and am not planning on visiting Canada until at least next Summer. Is there a kind soul out there willing to email this to me? email is below or 'righteousmaelstrom[at]yahoo.com'

Many thanks.

righteousmaelstrom, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 04:28 (nineteen years ago) link

i ordered it from arts and crafts, why can't you do that?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:04 (nineteen years ago) link

http://www.arts-crafts.ca

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Amoeba Hollywood had 1.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks, gents.

Either through arts & crafts or amazon, I'm looking at around $18 US which isn't bad. I'll wait til payday.

Does Amoeba do online sales? (I'm in Portland, OR y'see)

righteousmaelstrom, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I think they're sold out. This is readily available online through the usual channels if you'd like to preview it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 09:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Righteous,

Have you tried Half.com?

I got mines for $11.84 (plus $2.49 s/h).

nader (nader), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 13:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah...that's better. Thanks, nader!

righteousmaelstrom, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 16:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I really like this album. Not as good as Heart, but then few things are. Maybe I'm missing the synthpop slant.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:00 (nineteen years ago) link

What you talkin' 'bout Willis??! The synthpop is still there!

nice! now if they'd only come to new york again.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 30 December 2004 21:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I didn't expect to like this as much as I do, it's ridiculously charming.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 31 December 2004 15:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Amoeba Hollywood has a number of copies now ($20 USD).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I saw that the other day and wondered if you had bought a copy yet!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

they haven't released anything bad yet.

"the comeback EP" was pretty bad. though the disc was clear and had a pretty rainbow on it. I still like "Nightsongs" the best. and the hot keyboardist

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:01 (nineteen years ago) link

there don't seem to be any particular songs on the new album that really stand out as pop-gems like "my radio" or "elevator love letter" or the "this charming man" cover.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:06 (nineteen years ago) link

it took me the better part of ~18 months but i think the north is a p good album tbh

johnny crunch, Thursday, 14 August 2014 01:14 (nine years ago) link

one month passes...

About half of the album is very good, while the other half is pleasant enough, and only one song (the last one--Stars go techno-rave!) is a gross genre experiment on the level of "We Don't Want Your Body" from The Five Ghosts. All in all, their best since In Our Bedroom After the War.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Thursday, 9 October 2014 00:02 (nine years ago) link

noo don't get my hopes up

Nhex, Thursday, 9 October 2014 00:20 (nine years ago) link

one year passes...

i'd only heard like one or two songs from this band but devoured their whole discography last week after winning tickets to their show (which was fantastic)

kind of surprised they're not more ILX canon tbh, "no one is lost" is as good as any of my favorite albums from the last few years

gr8080, Monday, 19 October 2015 20:50 (eight years ago) link

like how is it possible that johnny fever has never posted itt

gr8080, Monday, 19 October 2015 20:51 (eight years ago) link

Amy's vocal performance on 'Are You Ok? is stunning. I think it's a great record.
Steven Hyden had this great line recently that I think applies here-"Sometimes the worst sin a band can commit is doing the same thing really well for an extended period."

campreverb, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:09 (eight years ago) link

they're kind of my comfort food of music at this point. likely my most played band of the last 10+ years.

bnw, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:21 (eight years ago) link

Set Yourself On Fire was a very, very good album and I really don't think they've matched it since.

Turrican, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:24 (eight years ago) link

"no one of lost" sounds like an ilx top 20 album, no one even nominated last year

gr8080, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:28 (eight years ago) link

"no one *is* lost"

gr8080, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:35 (eight years ago) link

No One Is Lost definitely their best album since In Our Bedroom After The War imo, though not quite as good as that one and Set Yourself On Fire. still pretty dang good though.

Nhex, Monday, 19 October 2015 23:59 (eight years ago) link

hah oh yeah, that's why cryptosicko said. i agree!

Nhex, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 00:00 (eight years ago) link

im glad that gr8080 got into stars

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 29 December 2015 23:58 (eight years ago) link

still mystified @ no johnny fever posts itt tbh

Haven't cared abot them in ages but the "Streetlights" cover is really nice. Maybe the only instance of white people covering Kanye without embarrassing themselves/the listener.

one year passes...

They have a new release, "There Is No Love In Fluorescent Light". it's good too.
8 albums in they are still churning out some consistently good-to-great albums. I mean "Are you ok?"'s new-orderism's may be one of my favorite songs in their catalogue. (also going through a break-up, so heavy rotation for Stars).
