it's not so bad that i'd quit ilx over it (i'd probably chew the tips off my fingers before i quit ilx) but i do find it deeply unpleasant and would prefer the option to turn it off

Mordy, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:48 (twelve years ago) link

i get so bogged down with my unread bookmarks i rarely look at SNA :(

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 2 February 2012 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

I tend to rely on my browser's turning a viste3d link pink/the "new posts" unfilled dot. So when the site gets rebooted and they all clear, Im completely lost haha.

One of a few reasons why I changed my name!

There was a while where pplains wasn't on 77 yet, and I'd log in as Pleasant Plains to check in. Fuck, those bookmarks stacked up fast.

Check out the blue cursor on the side to give you an idea of how far up it goes.

It's kinda like Portal or something. Or those parts in Pitfall II when you'd die and your character would literally be taken all the way back to the beginning.

I'm sorry markers, but I've had a couple days to try it out and I tried looking at it in various ways and trying to adjust, but really I just hate it.

WmC - who are you talking to? I'm sure it's useful for the right person (markers) it's just making me crazy.

Mordy, Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:39 (twelve years ago) link

just quoting Steely Dan, don't mind me

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:54 (twelve years ago) link

Can I just... I have another question - didn't ILX use to remember your css choice when you logged out?

Because now, every time I remove my cookies and forget to exclude ilxor's cookie, I have to go "i want to change the way the site looks" again after I log back in. I think I remember I didn't always have to do that?

StanM, Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

Hey Stan, if I remember rightly, and it is a few years ago now I wrote this stuff, I made the stylesheet be stored in a cookie, instead of most of your preferences, which are stored in the database.

This was so that people could set themselves up with one stylesheet at work and another at home. They might want to be more inconspicuous at work.

None of the software has changed in the past few years except what this thread is talking about.

Keith, Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

(Oh to fully answer, I think there was a day back in the beginning where I did store it in the database - it's still in there; it's just not used, but it was probably in 2007 now).

Keith, Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

I am trying to persevere with nuBookmarks and am becoming used to it. Most of the problems are down to my own impatience and random clicking that there's no need for.

The Preferenceville Horror (onimo), Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

Ok, thanks, Keith. No problem, this way I check out another stylesheet by accident once in a while :-)

StanM, Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

hi keith, while we've got you, stet asked me to ask you to disable this "flag post" function, says thanks in advance

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Thursday, 2 February 2012 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

btw the bookmark thing is still doing the thing where it goes to the top of the page

Write about grocery groin to the tune of Ernie K Doe's "Mother in Law"

earosmith (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 August 2023 05:09 (eight months ago) link

This isn't so much a question as it is an expression of puzzlement but...I just posted via Zing a short while ago and the DN displayed on my post is an older DN that is not the DN I'm currently using. Should that be happening? And might the fact of it happening have anything to do with the fact that my iPhone is old as shit (it's a 6)? I guess those last two actually were questions.

Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 00:52 (eight months ago) link

It shouldn't be happening – there's a weird situation in the code where it can keep two copies of a user around. You end up with two different sets of bookmarks and sometimes two DNs etc. I've never been able to really track the cause of it down, it's (probably) not your fault tho

stet, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 10:51 (eight months ago) link

two months pass...

I’ve just got my first iPhone and the Bookmark Post links JavaScript does not work and instead go to a form to submit instead. Is that expected?

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 15 October 2023 19:56 (six months ago) link

download Zing Touch from the app store!

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 15 October 2023 19:56 (six months ago) link

Can’t view it in my theme though :D

Speaking of which I am seeing a load of rendering bugs on the iPhone I need to fix.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 15 October 2023 20:59 (six months ago) link

Is that expected?
Yes there's some unreliability with iOS Safari that means it falls back to the non-JS version. Although that was (jesus) 10 years ago now so I should check that's still the case

stet, Thursday, 19 October 2023 10:33 (five months ago) link

Feel free to send me updates to the stylesheet!

stet, Thursday, 19 October 2023 10:33 (five months ago) link

One day! Been meaning to do it for a couple of years for general bugs.

Any idea on the bookmark bug though?

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 19 October 2023 17:27 (five months ago) link

not a bug - deliberate behaviour: there's a non-Javascript flow, which mobile devices use because they were buggy back in the day. You can see it on desktop if you disable JS in site settings

stet, Thursday, 19 October 2023 17:56 (five months ago) link

It’s always worked on Android browsers though 🤷

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 19 October 2023 22:15 (five months ago) link

Yeah, I have a vague recollection of just stopping it doing the Javascript thing on mobile at all; however, that would've been just after the first iPhone launched, so when you say it's always worked on Android, well, it's kind of always not worked on Android, as when I wrote that bit of code, Android didn't exist, so it seems whatever mechanism I used to filter it out didn't work once Android appeared.

Keith, Thursday, 19 October 2023 22:31 (five months ago) link

FWIW, I was definitely using Android to read ilx every day for like two years before Android officially existed and it worked fine so thanks!

fajita seas, Friday, 20 October 2023 02:44 (five months ago) link

I’m happy to take a look and suggest code to get the experience on iPhone up to par :)

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 20 October 2023 07:21 (five months ago) link

We need an “ILX is better in the app” popup apparently they’re all the rage

stet, Friday, 20 October 2023 11:09 (five months ago) link

Ah yes, sorry, I had forgotten about the shareholder value :)
