i'll bet people who lie to god are more fun than honest to god folk.

The word "group" starts to look really weird with overuse.

Semantic saturation is a cognitive neuroscience phenomenon where intense repetition causes a word or phrase to temporarily lose meaning for the listener, who can only process the speech as repeated meaningless sounds.

Thanks, Johnny Linguist.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Buscemi went bluer than I've ever seen him last night.

I was reminded of this by the word "linguist."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha.

I'd like to see that dude. Good comedians are hard to find.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

is there such a thing as a good sports bar? is there anyplace in chicago i can go to watch a game, say tomorrow's bc/clemson game for instance, and not be surrounded by backwards ballcapped steakheads? i just want to watch the game, have a couple of beers and maybe a burger.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes. I know there is. Let me consult Mr. Party Time Country Female and get back to you.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Crew?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:52 (seventeen years ago) link

this wouldn't be a problem if wls would show the goddamn best game of the timeslot instead of the craptacular iowa @ syracuse matchup.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:58 (seventeen years ago) link

and not be surrounded by backwards ballcapped steakheads?

Crew still has those, but they are gay, and many of them are in "steakhead" drag (meaning, the frat-boy look is more a costume than a default look).

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Friday, 8 September 2006 16:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Crew. That's actually the bar I was thinking of.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Friday, 8 September 2006 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

crew is also a long-assed way away from my house.

I've been taking a lot of photos of my morning commute in the last two days, but probably the best one was one I didn't take: a craggy-looking man in a Hawaiian shirt driving a station wagon at the corner of Lawrence and Hermitage. May have had a cigarette in his mouth, don't remember.

need one haircut. no longer possible to keep my locks out of my peepers. annoying x 1000.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 8 September 2006 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Kevin - take the western bus all the way north to the Candlelite, at Western & Touhy. They'll take care of you, with plenty of TV screens and garlic fries and no mooks.

Thirsty Thursday was way fun - I'd never been in Old Timers before and had always been curious.

Jordan, thanks - guess I'd better build an argument for P. Barber. I agree with you that she's more outstanding as a pianist than a vocalist.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 8 September 2006 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

At first I thought you were recommending him a haircut place, which would be incredible.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 16:52 (seventeen years ago) link

haircuts and garlic fries do not belong in the same place.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Friday, 8 September 2006 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Does the Western Bus go all the way to Touhy?

I need a hair cut too. I may just have my friend K@tie do it, although she butchered the hair of the last person she tried that on.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Friday, 8 September 2006 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

HAIRCUTS (cheap)= GABBY'S

Barber shop. $12. Good cuts.

I recommend either Kathy or the young guy with the buzzed hair whose name starts with an R...(Ringo? Rocco? Roscoe? Rimbaud? Ricardo Montevon? Ricky Lake???)

On Clark Street, about 3 blocks north of Diversey, on the West side of the street.

Feeling Shaggy?
Go see Gabby!!!!!

(so reads their door).

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Friday, 8 September 2006 17:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Western bus goes to Touhy, but you have to catch a further-north bus at the Brown Line western stop.

I would Love to have a night of pizza and garlic fries and beers with you all at the Candlelite sometime.

There's a guy's salon in Minneapolis called Tommy's - used to be called Schmidty's - that is kind of an Entourage/Swingers-type place, with espresso and a pool table.

There are two places in Chicago that have try to do the same thing - State Street Barbers (in Old Town and on Armitage in Lincoln Park - I went there once, and a pretty lady put a hot towel on my face) - and Belmont Barbershop: http://www.belmontbarbershop.com/

I couldn't remember the name, and in looking it up I came across this diverting Minneapolis blog:

not a freudian slip, it's what me and my ex-old lady used to call them. it's still with me even if she's not.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 8 September 2006 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

the last couple times i've had my hair cut i've gone to big hair. it's cheap but the hours are teh suck and it's always crowded on weekends.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 8 September 2006 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmmm There is also a place downtown somewhere that is a "guy's salon." $20 haircut, and you get beer and a guyish salon that is non-metrosexual. Not too helpful I know, but it sounded nice when my mgr at the restaurant told me.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Friday, 8 September 2006 17:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Gabby's is open 7-7 I think. Closed Mondays.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Friday, 8 September 2006 17:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Beer w/haircut is awesome (except I almost always go get mine cut during lunch).

This Stylus article on songs with surprise endings really should have included D'Angelo's "untitled". Or it should have been called "Top 10 Indie Rock Songs with Weird Endings".

i got my first chicago haircut in the tribune tower!

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, I have finished my big project for the day and I am very reluctant to start another. Friday afternoon boredom/wanderlust is here.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I WAS JUST FIRED FROM THE SITE OK

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, sorry dude.

Was it because you don't listen to Led Zep?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, that's right. It was because I don't write enough, which is fair enough but still a major bummer. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link

That's too bad. At least they evidently liked your writing, though.

Yeah, dude said as much in the e-mail. I just feel so cut off now. Password no longer works on the staff board.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:08 (seventeen years ago) link

You can get fired from Stylus?

When is Todd going to figure out that he's not hot shit?

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

So they don't use freelancers?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I like Todd and have never ever gotten the impression that he thinks he's hot shit. He's actually pretty modest, I think.

Anyway, I wasn't "fired." I'm just not part of the staff anymore. He said I can still pitch articles on a one-off basis. And I can still do singles reviews, presumably, since that feature relies on contributors that aren't technically on staff. But I still feel pretty shitty.
