Her music is not my thing, but Adele herself seems charming and appealing as a person.I listen to the radio kind of a lot in the car. I love singing to pop hits in the car! No one can hear me.

rollin in the deep is great, but the other stuff i've heard is pretty boring even though it has the best drummer in the world (chris dave).

Ohhhhhh hey, Alannah Myles. Maybe that's part of the problem for me. Adele's particular brand of pop reminds me of pop songs I hated in the past.
I normally don't put this much thought into why I don't like something but seriously, outside of you all (which maybe I should have come to you with this first) it seems like everybody I know loves this woman's music.
Fun fact: I won that Alannah Myles tape from a radio station when I was in high school. It was the least offensive thing on offer in their "prize closet" (not a euphemism).

Yeah, I don't care who wins the Grammys, but it was fun to watch the over-the-top and/or batshit performances -- which, let's be honest, constitutes most of the ceremony -- and acceptance speeches. (Bon Iver's speech basically carried the subtext that the Grammys are kind of bullshit.)
― jaymc, Monday, 13 February 2012 18:13 (twelve years ago) link
i think with the grammys i end up getting a little enraged by the vision of popular music presented by the show and how off it seems?
This was basically Bon Iver's point, if I understood him correctly.

yes but he annoyed me too

i was talking with sarah the other week about how it's weird how people describe certain songs as "unescapable" (like rollin in the deep) and i have almost never heard them. i didn't hear RITD until curiosity led me to pull it up on youtube. basically because i never listen to radio or watch music television.
Yeah. It's funny how everyone has different yardsticks when it comes to this stuff. Like, in my experience, "Rolling in the Deep" was pretty GD popular. But a few weeks ago on ILM, people were SHOCKED that I had never heard the latest (supposedly inescapable) Chris Brown or DJ Khaled tracks, and I was like, sorry!
― jaymc, Monday, 13 February 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link
I never hear anything unless I actively seek it out on the internets. I did hear rolling in the deep once in the car though, and I liked it. People who think certain songs are actually literally inescapable are probably just assholes.
― the glass of beer (askance johnson), Monday, 13 February 2012 18:22 (twelve years ago) link
i think it depends on which radio station you listen to/if you listen to radio stations at all. the only tolerable station in buffalo is the r&b/rap one so chris brown and dj khaled are inescapable but i hadn't heard rolling in the deep until i saw it performed on lol glee.
― horseshoe, Monday, 13 February 2012 18:24 (twelve years ago) link
i'm going to be honest: i often daydream about winning a big award like a grammy or oscar so i can imagine how i would turn down that award. like just not show up? make a long annoying speech? or go weird, like marlon brando?
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 February 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago) link
"accidentally" break it?
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 February 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link
just seems like it would be fun. you've got to pick your moment though, it's pretty much something you can do once and then expect to never get nominated for anything else again.
you could plan a wardrobe "malfunction"
― the glass of beer (askance johnson), Monday, 13 February 2012 18:32 (twelve years ago) link
Go balls out and refuse the award. Literally. With your balls out.
re: Bon Iver, and I know I've mentioned this before here, it makes me think of a Jeanine Garaffolo bit (that I think was aired as a commercial on MTV? which is p lol all things considered) in which she gave Eddie Vedder the business for going to some awards show and making a bit show of how he thought the award sucked instead of just staying home.
― carl agatha, Monday, 13 February 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, I only listen to the radio when I'm driving, and I pretty much only drive on weekends, and most of the time I'm flipping between WXRT (the AAA station) and B96/Kiss 103.5 (Top 40). So there's plenty of stuff I miss. (NB: B96 is a "rhythmic Top 40" station, which means that their playlists definitely lean way more R&B/rap than anything else, but I think that there are a bunch of songs in those genres that you're far more likely to encounter on actual genre-specific stations like Power 92 or WGCI.)
― jaymc, Monday, 13 February 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago) link
I did read that bon iver was invited to perform at the grammys but he declined or something
― the glass of beer (askance johnson), Monday, 13 February 2012 18:34 (twelve years ago) link
Earlier this month, Vernon told Billboard magazine that he refused to play at the Grammys because the executives — who were generally "awesome people" — had asked them to do a collaboration, while he’d intended to perform original music."F—in' rock n' roll should not be decided by people that have that job," he told the magazine. "Rock ’n’ roll should be f—ing people with guitars around their backs."

I don't understand how you could miss Rolling in the Deep if you have been in a grocery store, bar, restaurant, gym, office, Best Buy, or any other store in the last year. It is playing on Muzak everywhere, all the time.

Go up there in a silver hooded jumpsuit and then strip down to a pink leotard and black tightsoh wait
And yeah, I hear these songs out and about too, like in the grocery store, etc. I do a lot of errands though. I was just thinking that my main accomplishment in life may be "she carried many heavy bags of stuff from one place to another".
― Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Monday, 13 February 2012 18:54 (twelve years ago) link
strack and van til mainly seems to play hits of the 80s and 90s, trader joes plays 60s soul jams and 80s hits. also i don't go out a lot. sometimes i "hear" these songs without knowing that i've heard them until i listen on youtube and say "oh yeah i've heard this song" but RITD didn't sound familiar at all when i finally listened.
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 February 2012 19:09 (twelve years ago) link
