idk the paul mac thing does bespeak a pretty high level of cultural ignorance
― tanuki, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 13:53 (twelve years ago) link
I agree, but I'm also not surprised.
I would see Paul McCartney instead of Lil B because I only know about the latter as an ILX punchline. I'm sure his music is lovely.
I am still confused as to how Skrillex and Burial are both dubstep.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:11 (twelve years ago) link
Sure, but of whose culture?
― carl agatha, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:15 (twelve years ago) link
I just don't think Paul McCartney is culturally relevant anymore. I'm not sure the Beatles are either.
― carl agatha, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:17 (twelve years ago) link
point, I've never knowingly heard Lil B so there you go
― tanuki, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:18 (twelve years ago) link
I just really hate young people tbh
― tanuki, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:21 (twelve years ago) link
there are...two dubsteps
― the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago) link
Haha me too but I bet lots of my students wouldn't know who Paul McCartney is and they are a bright and lovely lot so I feel defensive of young ppl who aren't familiar with elderly rock stars.

super reductive dubstep primer for jaymc:
it started off with uk stuff basically like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMR5K2QWfJk
and then branched off into strains that either prized the atmosphere (like burial, zomby, etc) or the crazy lfo modulation (rusko and then everyone in the u.s.). and now it's all a post-everything bass music stew (or it's brostep).
― the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:37 (twelve years ago) link
Ah, that makes sense. Thx! I obv. like the atmospheric stuff better.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:42 (twelve years ago) link
me too, of course. although tonight i have to go program some brostep basslines for a friend who runs a competitive high school drumline. apparently they can use synthesizers now.
― the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:45 (twelve years ago) link
Lol I read all posts since Dan's pic thinking this was the secretly fascist thread. Makes more sense to me now.
― garbage corn fan (Je55e), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:48 (twelve years ago) link
the little bits of skrillex i've heard sounded alright. pretty simplistic but i get the appeal, it's basically like a boilerplate loud-quiet-loud alternative rock song but played on synths
― congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 16:41 (twelve years ago) link
there are some really nice pop hooks in there too, which are really what set him apart from everyone else doing big aggro drops.

we stayed right across the street from there on friday

Great Lake's the bomb. Just follow the Hot Doug's/Schwa/Alinea protocols and play by their rules.

Yeah, we've had it before, so we were looking forward to it. I think we're just going to go to Hopleaf instead and hope it's not too crowded.

for all of my yakking about romance, i don't really celebrate valentine's day
― Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 19:17 (twelve years ago) link
we're not doing anything special today tomorrow or yesterday
yeah I should say our plans for tomorrow are not really vday related, just the best opportunity for our dinner companions to get a sitter and escape their 11 month old for a while
― long duk dan (dan m), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 19:19 (twelve years ago) link
For us, it's mostly just an excuse to go out for a low-key weeknight date. Nothing candle-lit or rose-petaled, and no stuffed animals or Mylar balloons.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 19:25 (twelve years ago) link
we do a low-key v day as well - our tradition is to make cupcakes (which we did in springfield this past weekend) - tonight we're making dinner and dessert and we'll probably watch a movie or something.
but friday is our first ever date where we'll be hiring a paid babysitter to watch evie. i think we're going to go to the bar/pie place on lincoln to eat pie and drink.
there's a new bar/pizza place around the corner from my house. their website isn't updated yet though. they just opened on sunday: http://brickschicago.com/BigBricks/

It's a Walgreens. State and Randolph in the same building as the Joffrey Ballet.

Oh! There's a Bricks on Lincoln and Armitage with a basement entrance that does not look like a place where you should be going. Their pizza is really good. I'm glad that the Big Bricks is open now.

no v-day plans here either, just our regular tuesday night potluck with friends.

Jeff's in Houston (and I think he might have been traveling this time last year, too) but even if he weren't, the day would likely pass by unremarked.

This will be the third v day in a row where we have stayed home and made a recipe called "hot date with a chicken". A tradition is born.

I didn't know until recently that you can't copyright recipes, so like every one ever is available online
― long duk dan (dan m), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 20:49 (twelve years ago) link
somehow the fact that you can't copyright recipes was one of the first things I learned in library school.
― the glass of beer (askance johnson), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 20:58 (twelve years ago) link
I had no idea. I guess this is why people can reproduce Cook's Illustrated recipes on 1,000,000 internet blogs.
― carl agatha, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 21:00 (twelve years ago) link
you can't copyright recipes only secret ingredients
― the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 21:05 (twelve years ago) link
you can't copyright ... a feeling
