My brain is just not working today. But the mix is worth bumping again. It's A++.

real nice

that's not bad but i find him a lot less interesting when he's doing straight rap shit like that

J0rdan S., Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

IMO the more guest vocalists he gets, the better

Rare Dâm-Funk interview on collabos and the upcoming singles and album Invite The Light. Including unusual sharp words on 'Niggas In Paris' / Tyler The Creator from 5:30 on

http://www.mixcloud.com/Sterrenplaten/dam-funk-interview-dour-festival-2012

maarten, Friday, 20 July 2012 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

^ Extract from the interview with Damon:

"I'm tired of people making songs like 'Niggas in Paris'. You got millionaires like Kanye and Jay-Z who still have the nerve to use that kind of word and have the whole world running around talking about niggas in Paris. What are you doing? You got millions, fool. What are you doing making my race look bad? You don't ever hear people say 'Kikes in Paris', 'Chinks in Paris', 'Wetbacks in Paris'? So why do you degrade my race and my people? I'm tired of it, I'm not degrading my black people in my music, I won't. I won't be like those other coons doing it right now."

not sure if i'll ever listen to another dam funk record but i will always have time for toeachizown

een, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 00:33 (ten years ago) link

oh guys the Steve Arrington collab is brilliant, this new one with Snoop isn't as brilliant but still sweet, i could live in Damon's woozy head-world forever tbh

this is pretty great

My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 19:18 (ten years ago) link

some hipster dude told me it's better than snoop's first album to which my response was LOL

the late great, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 19:20 (ten years ago) link

still it made me excited to hear it

the late great, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 19:20 (ten years ago) link

did he actually use the phrase "snoop's first album"

☞ (brimstead), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link

actually, i think he said "early snoop"

the late great, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 21:24 (ten years ago) link

it's definitely the best thing (at least that i've heard) that snoop has done in awhile, just because i think dam-funk's sort of drifting clouds of synth funk sort of fit what snoop can do now, just be a sort of amiable presence and do some nice sing-songy routines and stuff

it's real dreamy sounding

My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 21:40 (ten years ago) link

yo, you guys heard snoop's FIRST album?

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 21:46 (ten years ago) link

he produced a snoop dogg album?

flopson, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 21:46 (ten years ago) link

5 years from now people will be talking shit in this thread

there's still time people

Noodzilla (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link

it really seems like a natural pairing, psyched to listen.

ugh not feeling

|$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:09 (ten years ago) link

snoop just needs to make an album with quik or dre or just retire already

|$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:10 (ten years ago) link

I thought Quick retired

My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:11 (ten years ago) link

he should go play golf with quik

|$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:13 (ten years ago) link

I think he coaches youth football

My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:18 (ten years ago) link

This is kinda low key nice. Nothing v exciting tho. Every song holds the same tempo, pretty weak drums too. The synths sound super. idk just made me want to listen to the new Dom Kennedy album which I think is in the same lane but much better.

Al He Miola (Spottie), Thursday, 5 December 2013 06:10 (ten years ago) link

yeah, this starts really well (certainly hearing snoop sound fantastic and urgent in 2013 is a shock, anyway) and ends low-key nice. pleasant little curio to end the year with, i'm happy with it

like deej my 2010 love for d-f has otherwise completely and inexplicably dissipated

lex pretend, Thursday, 5 December 2013 09:46 (ten years ago) link

I guess DF was always just kind of a dreamy, vibey thing without a lot of substance to me...cumulus clouds of funk, this didn't really feel that different

My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 December 2013 14:36 (ten years ago) link

Always felt like he needed an MC or at least someone else to bring his music into a bit more focus, so I'm looking forward to this.

Matt DC, Thursday, 5 December 2013 14:38 (ten years ago) link

didn't really like "Faden Away." some moments on this are a little better than that but overall this album is a mild disappointment. snoop's voice doesn't sound very interesting. also they took all the funkiest parts out of "Feels So Real"!!!!

yeah basically the trick lasted for about a year or two for me, scratched an itch, didn't really move anywhere

rap steve gadd (D-40), Thursday, 5 December 2013 15:35 (ten years ago) link

i think i'm benefitting from only having listened to one of those early mixtapes quite a bit and i kind of forgot so i never really burned out on it

My Chief Keef Keef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 December 2013 15:49 (ten years ago) link

I can totally see that, I'm sure this stuff is as good as the earlier stuff, which seems like the nature of his work in general. there's no risk of failure, really

rap steve gadd (D-40), Thursday, 5 December 2013 15:55 (ten years ago) link

Its all a little too comfortable for repeat listening.

Al He Miola (Spottie), Thursday, 5 December 2013 16:01 (ten years ago) link

i'm all about comfort and repetition tbh

Noodzilla (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 December 2013 16:17 (ten years ago) link

then enjoy!

Al He Miola (Spottie), Thursday, 5 December 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

i agree his aesthetic is pretty narrow and unchanging but the guest vocalists he's used add a little salt to the mix and i think the whole thing is designed to create a certain woozy flow as discussed upthread, but you cd also mix this with the harder lockgrooves of classic G-Funk if you wanted

Noodzilla (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 December 2013 16:38 (ten years ago) link

photo in the op is a 10/10 classic
