Not all messages are displayed: show all messages (16745 of them)

super confusing, the caller ID is a fucking mess, some outgoing messages randomly don't sync to other devices, high risk of coming back to your mac hours later to see what the other person thought was a text you would get on your phone. whole thing is a total shitshow

stet, Friday, 17 February 2012 00:43 (twelve years ago) link

I sent a message to my iPad from my mbp & it was received about 10 seconds later; fwiw I don't usually get texts on my iPad so I can't say if I'm missing messages or not

Euler, Friday, 17 February 2012 00:45 (twelve years ago) link

id be a lot less paranoid if imessage wasnt also effectively an SMS replacement for me. i dont mind missing IMs but i need texts!

max, Friday, 17 February 2012 00:47 (twelve years ago) link

is it possible to uninstall it

max, Friday, 17 February 2012 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

doesn't look like it

stet, Friday, 17 February 2012 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

Drag app to trash?

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Friday, 17 February 2012 00:52 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, but then if you had iMessage still active on the Mac and turned off on your iPhone, when people using it on their iPhones tried to text you, their text would go to the Mac and you'd never know about it

stet, Friday, 17 February 2012 00:55 (twelve years ago) link

see the tortured sentences they have reduced us to

stet, Friday, 17 February 2012 00:55 (twelve years ago) link

theres an uninstall option under the imessages menu thank god

max, Friday, 17 February 2012 00:56 (twelve years ago) link

lol just coming to post that

stet, Friday, 17 February 2012 00:56 (twelve years ago) link

isn't the whole point of icloud etc. that everything gets pushed everywhere? like incoming iMessages should push to both your phone and mac?

Nhex, Friday, 17 February 2012 05:12 (twelve years ago) link

it's because of how the "Caller ID" for iMessage works on iPhones vs. all other devices.

The way to make everything work properly is to set your iMessage caller ID on all devices including your iPhone to the same email address.

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:17 (twelve years ago) link

this seems like a fairly simple thing that they really shouldnt roll out w/o figuring out:

if you have an account open on 1-3 devices at once, do they all get the messages all the time? annoying!
but if they DON'T, and imessage mis-guesses which device you're using, you risk losing messages - worse than annoying!

it's a tough one.

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:41 (twelve years ago) link

They should all get them, and when you read a message it should be marked as read on every device. Sounds really really simple to me, unless I'm missing something.

(the guy standing behind you)

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:45 (twelve years ago) link

but actually, if i was messaging someone on my computer, and my phone was in my pocket, or on my desk, and it buzzed every time i got a message, i would not be happy about that situation

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:45 (twelve years ago) link

iMessages are just like texts though, aren't they? So wouldn't the fact of 'Messages' being on Macs be the problem, rather than how the actual messages are rolled out?

Wub wub wub wubwubwubwub wub Pzzzzzzz WUBB wubwub (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:48 (twelve years ago) link

the fact of... i don't understand the question

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:51 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i'm not quite seeing the problem here unless you lose messages between devices

Nhex, Friday, 17 February 2012 05:52 (twelve years ago) link

It's hard when Apple gives common-noun names to all its apps xp

Wub wub wub wubwubwubwub wub Pzzzzzzz WUBB wubwub (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:53 (twelve years ago) link

i don't understand how you don't understand what i'm saying is the problem here

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:55 (twelve years ago) link

What I mean is that 'buzzing every time you get a message' is what messages have done since dinosaurs, therefore idg your beef with the buzzing every time thing.

Wub wub wub wubwubwubwub wub Pzzzzzzz WUBB wubwub (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:55 (twelve years ago) link

because apple just rolled out this thing that allows you to 'imessage' (which effectively replaces texting 80% of the time on your phone) for the desktop.

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:56 (twelve years ago) link

they've rolled into ichat, so it overlaps with IMing now. so if you are having a sesh with a friend on your desktop, every time your friend replies, your phone will also buzz.

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:57 (twelve years ago) link

ohhhh I see what you mean

Wub wub wub wubwubwubwub wub Pzzzzzzz WUBB wubwub (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 17 February 2012 05:59 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe that's why they rolled out the beta six months early

Wub wub wub wubwubwubwub wub Pzzzzzzz WUBB wubwub (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 17 February 2012 06:02 (twelve years ago) link

still it's not so much a technical problem as a practical one

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 February 2012 06:07 (twelve years ago) link

yep

Wub wub wub wubwubwubwub wub Pzzzzzzz WUBB wubwub (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 17 February 2012 06:20 (twelve years ago) link

I suppose the word 'spaz' is okay now that Apple has started using it officially

So the fan on my Old Apple Crust Object for 2006 is kaput. Do fans totally die like that? I'm wondering if I should take the keyboard off to see if there's something blocking it (because even when I skoosh compressed air through the vents I can't hear it spinning around) - does this sound likely?

Sorry if this should more properly go in I Hate Apple. I don't blame them!

sktsh, Friday, 17 February 2012 09:56 (twelve years ago) link

haha CRUST OBJECT that's exactly what my 2008 MBP is turning into

the late great, Friday, 17 February 2012 16:25 (twelve years ago) link

bad thing: my mac pro may not be supported in mountain lion

neutral thing: I really like it, but it's not really necessary since it's just an excuse for me to play with upgrading it and the majority of its use is completely unnecessary anyway and a time/money sink

end result: I end up figuring out my priorities better anyway

btw I have a magic trackpad and the lion gesture crap is pretty damn addictive

I find myself trying to swipe to go "back" in the Finder, and it doesn't work, and I get annoyed x 100000000

The way to make everything work properly is to set your iMessage caller ID on all devices including your iPhone to the same email address.

Yes, but *that* breaks the SMS fallback, which means when you have no data (eg abroad) you miss another load of messages.

stet, Friday, 17 February 2012 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

Tracer three-finger back swipe works in Finder if you enable it.

FWIW it's in System Prefs - Trackpad - More Gestures - Swipe Between Pages - "Swipe With Two or Three Fingers"

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 17 February 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

omg there's an option to turn the three-finger gestures (mission control, swipe b/n workspaces) into four! Cheers stet!

Been hoping every with every iPad/iPod touch announcement that the carriers will loosen their SMS-silo mentality a bit.

Really the Messages app thing just needs the concept of what the "current" device is. Send notifications to that one, if it can't determine which one is current then send to all, and once a message is read in one spot mark that device as current and then mark it read everywhere

there are so many cases where this wouldn't work unless you had to 'sign in' on every device which would be a king-size drag

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 17 February 2012 23:40 (twelve years ago) link

How so? I guess this is trickier for multi-user, but otherwise, pick the non-idle device?

valleys of your mind (mh), Friday, 17 February 2012 23:42 (twelve years ago) link

It should send all messages to all devices everywhere *including* outgoing messages, always.

What it should optionally do is only *alert* on a device you're actively using, or all devices if you're not using any.

Reading or clearing an alert on one device should clear it on all of them.
