Oh cut it out with all the snark. Most responses are way off the mark here - dude wasn't saying he hated synths or even synth washes as a rule. Overused production device = aesthetic laziness = legitimate complaint fodder.
― wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link
an unfocused generic rant isn't particularly worth anyone's time
like, what exactly are we supposed to do with "[x] makes me barf" with no examples of [x] and no actual topic to converse about? my answer is "make fun of it"
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago) link
Your complaint is justified, of course. But you get to choose how to handle it - do you ignore the thread, add snark, or explore the topic in a more intelligent manner.

How much more focused do you want it, man? I even gave you the sound of the annoying synths. Gag me with a spoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if Donna Haraway's thoughts on cyborgism and a "powerful infidel heteroglossia" has informed all this stuff. So many post-Silent Shout girls with technology that's almost the 10s equivalent of Lilith Fair, trying to say something new and important and using fresh, seemingly-innovative tools to produce their message.
But probably I'm over-thinking it and it's just the ease of access and familiarity of texture that informs it.

Synthy retreads will probably give way to grungy retreads p soon fwiw. At least a handful of bands in PF's last best of 2011 sounded like Dinasaur Jr cover bands.

Also the question of the title: never has a question made me prouder to be a 20-something. Now the past eight years were worth something. I had nothing to do really with all these whooshy synths but I will gladly take responsibility for them. Hanging out in a Radio Shack pressing the "demo" button on every mass-market synth, pretending to be Enya at age 10 FINALLY PAYS OFF.

This thread, for various reasons, is why I'm going 'troll.'
fwiw, kornrulez, I'm with you. I can't wait till jazz is suddenly popular again and there are like, four bands left in the whole world, because 1) no one knows how to play anything, and 2) no one knows how to be in a band and communicate with actual human beings 'irl.'
I anticipate the customary gifs of old men complaining and whatnot, and I will preemptively say FYM ASMD. Stacy Q and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam being referenced in reviews POSITIVELY and you're all stroking your beards and nodding in agreement? For shame. Come back, Babyshambles, all is forgiven.

dull post-rock washes made with synths are just as inauthentic as dull post-rock washes made with guitars, though.

Synths are popular because you can get great sounds out of them without a lot of time-consuming lessons or practice. That's not a snark and not a dis on a generation, it's just a fact.
"I Wonder If I Take You Home" by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam is one of the best records of the '80s, fyi.
