wait, what's wrong with stacy q and lisa lisa and cult jam exactly?

yeah, what?

hey sixtysomethings: what's with all the synths?
― geeta, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 00:16 (twelve years ago) link
I anticipate the customary gifs of old men complaining and whatnot, and I will preemptively say FYM ASMD. Stacy Q and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam being referenced in reviews POSITIVELY and you're all stroking your beards and nodding in agreement? For shame. Come back, Babyshambles, all is forgiven.

synth haters can lick my actual sac
Is that a quote from Panda Bear?
At this point, I'd be happy to go back to everybody trying to sound like Sufjan Stevens Illinois record. Come on musicians. Enough with the chillwave fer crying out loud.

dull post-rock washes made with synths are just as inauthentic as dull post-rock washes made with guitars, though.

Synths are popular because you can get great sounds out of them without a lot of time-consuming lessons or practice. That's not a snark and not a dis on a generation, it's just a fact.
"I Wonder If I Take You Home" by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam is one of the best records of the '80s, fyi.

hate to imagine what kind of dull, reactionary response there might be to all this awesomeness. howabout yet another return of garage rock?
― Chris S, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 06:51 (twelve years ago) link
actual garage rock being made right now is pretty awesome
― Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 06:52 (twelve years ago) link
eh, it does what it does, but I had to endure this West Coast garage scene for the last 12 or so years and the bands basically all sound like Hunx & His Punx
― Chris S, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 06:55 (twelve years ago) link
not that I don't enjoy the stuff sometimes, but I guess I'm a little more psych/experimental/ethereal at heart
although, I guess the thing about nowadays is you have all these different musical cults for every possible disposition happening simultaneously
― Chris S, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 06:59 (twelve years ago) link
all these different musical cults for every possible disposition happening simultaneously
picturing all these playing at once and imagining it sounds like the A.C. 88 Song EP

― Little GTFO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 08:53 (twelve years ago) link
thing about garage proper is there's only one garage, it's not exactly the most open-minded form
― Chris S, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 08:55 (twelve years ago) link
i know, i've been a garage fan since milkshakes/nomads years. if the dirtbombs can cover old detroit house tracks, then synthpunk can be revisted as "garage rock". otherwise it IS stagnant bullshit, and fuck that.
― Little GTFO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 09:06 (twelve years ago) link
1st wave hozac shit = doing something interesting w garage rock, and i'm all in favor of that
― Little GTFO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 09:07 (twelve years ago) link
synthpunk can be revisted as "garage rock". otherwise it IS stagnant bullshit, and fuck that.
uh, no, just because the garage rock umbrella doesn't cover synthpunk that sounds nothing like garage rock (punk is not garage rock) doesn't mean that garage rock is "stagnant bullshit."

I can't wait till jazz is suddenly popular again and there are like, four bands left in the whole world, because 1) no one knows how to play anything, and 2) no one knows how to be in a band and communicate with actual human beings 'irl.'
haha how do you go from this to dissing ppl who have been irrelevant for 20 years
