I really don't want Abby to leave, I have such a crush on her. First they took away Casey Wilson, although she managed to bounce back pretty well, but I don't like losing all my SNL crushes.

i'm more into nasim and vanessa

some dude, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, they actually have pretty cute cast right now tbh. I think my infatuation with Abby just comes from looking at her dad and thinking, "that came from that?".

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

Abby is just a low-rent Kate Hudson, right? That's why Fox wants her.

Nasim and Vanessa can be, at times, the funniest cast member on SNL. I've never once thought that about Abby Elliott.

Casey Wilson was so-so on SNL, and is near-brilliant on Happy Endings, so I'd say things worked out for everyone. I was really bummed with they axed Michaela Watkins, though. I thought she had major potential, and while I may be the only one, I loved her "Biiiitch, pleeeaase..." blogger character.

RIP Tina Tina Chaneuse

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 18:43 (twelve years ago) link

Oh yeah, I miss her. And yeah you are 100% otm with things working out great for Casey Wilson, but it wasn't looking that promising when she first got the ax from Lorne. Also, I was just bitter about the rumors that it was because she was "too fat".

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 18:44 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the "too fat" thing was fucked up, and also something I would totally expect from Lorne Michaels.

Yeah, sometimes (as in the cases of Casey Wilson and Jimmy Fallon) it isn't so much that a cast member is actively shitty as it is they're maybe just not the best fit for SNL. As evidenced by their success in other venues that better suit them.

I've kinda been saying this for years about Kristen Wiig, and Bridesmaids more or less confirmed it for me. I think she has a solid career ahead of her once she shakes off the wacky characters.

Offal Waffle (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't think Casey Wilson was funny on SNL and the writers did not seem to know what to do with her -- I don't watch or care for Happy Endings, but it sounds like a better fit.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 19:23 (twelve years ago) link

xp: you know that Kristen Wiig did 22 movies before "Bridesmaids", right

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 19:47 (twelve years ago) link

She was great in Knocked Up.

no where you find infromations about kirsten wigs movies before kirsten wigs first movie birdsmades pleas

Gorilla Moustache Hoarder (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

I wanna say there's a slight difference between her involvement in Bridesmaids and, for instance, her role in Date Night, but I can't quite articulate what it is...

Seriously, though. She's been great in most of her supporting film roles, but Bridesmaids showed her range and capability as a film lead/creative force.

Gorilla Moustache Hoarder (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:59 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i mean i've seen over a dozen of Wiig's pre-Bridesmaids movies but i'll be damned if i could remember what she did in any of them besides Knocked Up off the top of my head until consulting google. it's like pointing out that Will Ferrell was in movies before Old School.

some dude, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

She was great in Macgruber!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

(maybe that doesn't count since it's an SNL spinoff anyway)

Seriously w/r/t Will F? Zoolander + Austin Powers + Dick.

s.clover, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

she was good in macgruber but it's not the kind of movie i readily remember the very existence of when discussing anyone besides will forte

some dude, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

He was so great in Dick omg

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

I love everyone and everything about that movie, though.

Seriously w/r/t Will F? Zoolander + Austin Powers + Dick.

not paying enough attention to reading, made me think "Was Will Forte really in Dick?"

pplains, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:11 (twelve years ago) link

Zoolander was Ferrell's only bigger-than-a-cameo role in a movie that made a decent amount of money before Old School, i'd say his pre-2002 filmography is pretty comparable to Wiig's pre-2011

but then we're in a crazy world where people apparently remember Dick, so

some dude, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:12 (twelve years ago) link

I was a little surprised nobody nominated Dick for the comedy poll (haven't seen it myself).

Gorilla Moustache Hoarder (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:12 (twelve years ago) link

Beyond being solidly entertaining, it has the best use of a Yes song I've ever seen in a movie.

we can be gyros just for one day (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:13 (twelve years ago) link

It just seems weird to say that someone who has been in 22 movies, many of which have been commercially successful, can now finally have a good post-SNL career now that they've been nominated for a screenwriting Oscar. It's like saying Clint Eastwood's career started with "Unforgiven".

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, it's weird that Clint Eastwood never had a leading role in a movie prior to Unforgiven.

Gorilla Moustache Hoarder (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:17 (twelve years ago) link

lol

some dude, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/dd/Mattwalshcomedy.jpg

this guy has been in a shit ton of successful comedy movies but if he ever got top billing in a movie that made $200 million i would be comfortable in saying it was a breakout role without going 'omg but he was in other movies before that!'

some dude, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

plus, in terms of what Deric was saying to begin with, most of Wiig's previous movie roles were pretty wacky and were practically little sketch-like scenes within those movies anyway

some dude, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

xp the difference being that UCB and SNL aren't even on the same level of exposure. Matt Walsh is just an "oh, that guy!" and Kristen Wiig is "oh, Kristen Wiig!".

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:24 (twelve years ago) link

But I think some dude's point is that pre-Knocked Up, Wiig was probably an "oh, that girl!" for those who didn't really keep close tabs on SNL.

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, and SNL superstardom doesn't necessarily translate into film superstardom (although it's possible that Master of Disguise did much better overseas than I realize).

Gorilla Moustache Hoarder (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

Beyond being solidly entertaining, it has the best use of a Yes song I've ever seen in a movie.

I didn't like the movie, but "Heart of the Sunrise" in Buffalo 66 inches past "Seen All Good People".

pplains, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't watch SNL when Fallon was on, but I did recently watch SNL's Best of Jimmy Fallon on Netflix and found most of it pretty funny. Maybe my love for Late Night has made me predisposed to like him, though.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 23:40 (twelve years ago) link

That was one loose and freewheelin' and ramshackle show. But it was a pretty fun episode of The Jonah and Kristen Experience, all told.

I don't know why I loved the Liza Minelli sketch so much, but I did.

This probably means little to most of you at the moment (and it may turn out to not mean anything, period), but Jet Eveleth has apparently gotten a callback for a possible cast slot at SNL. If she gets hired, that'll make her the third cast member to come out of iO Chicago (after Vanessa Bayer and Paul Brittain) in a very short time. I reeeeally should'a stuck it out there...

It means something to me -- for a little while Jet dated the friend of mine through whom I met Paul B. (Wondering now if you know the friend: M@rk P13b3nga.)

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Monday, 12 March 2012 00:43 (twelve years ago) link

Hmmm, no...a quick Facebook stalk-a-rama suggests that we might know some of the same people, but that whole crew is a "generation" or three ahead of my peers (who started 5B shows tonight...sigh) and I.
