the other challenge that competitors face is matching apple's product costs. it sounds weird because the ipad costs more than the fire, but if the fire had the ipad's specs it would cost a lot more than an ipad. similar to the influence mcdonald's has over the commodity price of potatoes, apple is wielding a huge amount of power when it comes to the R&D and production of mobile components, even shipping routes. for instance:

apple's total control of the tablet supply chain is really what's going to keep them in the catbird's seat for at least a few years. that and the massive app library they've got going.

A lot of the components used in an iPhone or iPad are just unavailable to other companies, due to Apple purchasing the entire supply or ownership of key assets.

On the other hand, a lot of materials and processes that haven't traditionally been used in consumer electronics have caught on due to Apple. Corning's Gorilla Glass being the most obvious example. Developed in the 1960s, virtually mothballed for several decades, and now in 20% of the world's mobile handsets and back in active development.

i did some "back of envelope" calculations driving home and i figured that a 300 ppi 15" monitor would be like 3x the resolution of a 1440 x 900, i.e. something like 4320 x 2700 ... does that sound right?

It depends how far away from your face they're claiming. I guess distance is figured in somehow? I don't know, we're talking friggin huge resolutions in any case.

I have a 27" (yeah, yeah I blew too much money last year) monitor on my desktop and I am kind of scared by what resolution it'd be to be a "retina display"

by 'retina' they mean 'snake' and by display they mean 'we think you are morons'

you mean the term or the actual high-DPI screen tech?

the terminology is all their marketing department afaik, but the high dpi displays are made by others with heavy investment from Apple

It's a bit like how the iOs5.1 update changes the display to show '4G' instead of '3G' without actually changing anything, a bit like how a year or two back they were found out displaying four or five bars even when the reception was low.

eh, the bar thing makes some sense in that there's no "here is what the bars mean on the cell phone" guide

the screen is actually changed, though. the current one has pixels like lego blocks, the new one has pixels so small you need a decent macro lens to see them.

It's really depressing, having both an iPhone 4S and a first generation iPad right next to you and continually using the iPhone to read things and browse the web because the iPad seems so slow and painfully blocky in comparison
