iPad spock

valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

I enjoyed the claim during the launch that ipad is the consumer's favorite device for email. email on the ipad is a total abortion.

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

"favorite" meaning they read a shitload of email on it, maybe

My coworkers sure like to respond to email during meetings on theirs

valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

it's like saying my favorite browser is the one on my phone because I use it a lot

butthurt comments over milquetoast headline

apple store is responding now...

Choose a network carrier.

Your iPad will work only with the carrier you choose.

AT&T Delivers on March 16
AT&T Delivers on March 16

Both the ATT and Verizon model of iPad can roam worldwide on GSM/UMTS networks. In countries without compatible 4G LTE networks, the new iPad will operate on GSM network technologies such as HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA. When you travel internationally, you can use a micro-SIM card from a local carrier.

currently installing ios 5.1, my first wifi OS update

I'll let you know later if this was an error in judgment

Still can't get to the pre-order page. Apple enjoys making nerds obsessively refresh, hoping they can get through, don't they?

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

Anybody know what the EPP discount on the new iPad is?

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

oh shit I forgot to check out through eppstore

just a sec, I will check and then register my annoyance

valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

2% xp

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

"starting at $489"

prices range $489 - $812 instead of whatever. So, probably between $10 and $17.

Some kind of new new Apple logo. Next year's will have a retina display, though.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:30 (twelve years ago) link

can't decide if the last/new or the Aqua (middle) logo is the worst

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:37 (twelve years ago) link

That middle looks more like graphite. I <3 graphite. 4 is the worst imo

stet, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

I like new one

valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:43 (twelve years ago) link

the new one doesn't really read for me as a whole object. the first two are obviously the best.

jed_, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

The new one looks like one of Andy Warhol's urine paintings.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

Is this actually a new logo, orjustone they messed with for the slides? They have done that a lot in the past, including for all the iPod ads.

Apple legal's logo is still the all-red one they used to use on manuals, too.

stet, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 23:04 (twelve years ago) link

Ordered the 64 GB this time, fuggit

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 23:12 (twelve years ago) link

If they really wanted to be retro they could go back to their original logo effort:

everything else is secondary (Lee626), Thursday, 8 March 2012 00:25 (twelve years ago) link

what would be the resolution of a 15" retina screen?

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 00:29 (twelve years ago) link

new one isn't a whole object, it only becomes whole on the side of an Apple product

namaste

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 00:59 (twelve years ago) link

i did some "back of envelope" calculations driving home and i figured that a 300 ppi 15" monitor would be like 3x the resolution of a 1440 x 900, i.e. something like 4320 x 2700 ... does that sound right?

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 01:15 (twelve years ago) link

It depends how far away from your face they're claiming. I guess distance is figured in somehow? I don't know, we're talking friggin huge resolutions in any case.

I have a 27" (yeah, yeah I blew too much money last year) monitor on my desktop and I am kind of scared by what resolution it'd be to be a "retina display"

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 01:31 (twelve years ago) link

have they invented this 'retina display' bullshit or what

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

by 'retina' they mean 'snake' and by display they mean 'we think you are morons'

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

you mean the term or the actual high-DPI screen tech?

stet, Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:41 (twelve years ago) link

the terminology is all their marketing department afaik, but the high dpi displays are made by others with heavy investment from Apple

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 14:00 (twelve years ago) link

It's a bit like how the iOs5.1 update changes the display to show '4G' instead of '3G' without actually changing anything, a bit like how a year or two back they were found out displaying four or five bars even when the reception was low.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 8 March 2012 15:00 (twelve years ago) link

eh, the bar thing makes some sense in that there's no "here is what the bars mean on the cell phone" guide

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 15:02 (twelve years ago) link

the screen is actually changed, though. the current one has pixels like lego blocks, the new one has pixels so small you need a decent macro lens to see them.

stet, Thursday, 8 March 2012 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

It's really depressing, having both an iPhone 4S and a first generation iPad right next to you and continually using the iPhone to read things and browse the web because the iPad seems so slow and painfully blocky in comparison

/mega first world problem

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

ppl with 1st gen ipads are the most disgusting savages

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 8 March 2012 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

how often should you change an iPad

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Thursday, 8 March 2012 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 8 March 2012 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

Every year.

Jeff, Thursday, 8 March 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

mh that is probably the first-worldest first-world problem i've ever heard

that said i relate entirely

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

think I'm finally going to get an iPad (work is paying) - what else do I need? smart cover? a case? screen protector?

toby, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

idg people who buy screen protectors etc. for their apple iProducts

flagp∞st (dayo), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

steve jobs did not fall upon his own sword for antennagate so that you could put your iPhone in a condom

flagp∞st (dayo), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

I have a screen protector for my iphone why because I cannot afford another iphone and it goes in a pocket w/ my keys

iatee, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

The smart cover is pretty sick though, have you seen it in action? Frankly I wish I had one for my iPhone solely for the times I want to prop it up (i.e. the airplane)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

iatee why would you put your phone in the same pocket as your keys???

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

I can only afford pants w/ one pocket because apple products cost so much

iatee, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

yes and anyway how can you fit an iphone and keys in skintight purple jeans and why aren't your keys on a carabiner?

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

keys go on your carabiner, iphone goes in your bike messenger bag or your hoodie pockets

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:22 (twelve years ago) link

ehh iPhone screens are made of glass, even if they get scratched (mine cretainly has a few) you can't notice them when the device is on (same goes for dirt inside the screen etc.)

flagp∞st (dayo), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:22 (twelve years ago) link
