They don't but I think AT&T throw in unlimited data access through their hotspots.

thanks dudes. my brain hurts when i try to work money shit out.

BUT

My iphone said it was on 4G today! Am I the only one who didnt know about this. I did a speed test (directly outside my work building so not the best reception) and registered download speed 7.75mbps

The new update makes 4GS (and maybe 4G) phones say 4G instead of 3G, even though nothing really changed. Apple just decided that they were willing to call their download speeds 4G now.

It's only on the 4S -- its chipset can do HSPA+, which T-Mobile has been calling 4G for a long time.

valleys of your mind (mh), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 00:02 (twelve years ago) link

That is, HSPA+ is about twice as fast as HSPA (fastest GSM 3G network available to older iPhone 4 on AT&T) or CDMA (fastest current 3G service from Verizon or Sprint, even on iPhone 4S).

can someone on 3g do a speed test pls

you'd have to do a test on both in the same location, though

iPhone 4S: AT&T vs. Sprint vs. Verizon

Extensive test of all three US iPhone carriers conducted throughout California in several urban and rural locations. AT&T's pseudo-4G HSPA+ is indeed the fastest, averaging more than twice as fast as Verizon and almost three times faster than Sprint.

Fastest... on an iPhone. It'd be interesting to see the same tests with an iPad/LTE.

xp That's because the last dozen or so posts are about using an iPhone as a hotspot, along with a wifi-only iPad. We'll have to wait a few more days (16 March) for the new iPad to ship, and probably a few more days after that for tech sites to compare the two carriers' speed. Both AT&T and Verizon's 4G should be blazingly fast, but neither has 4G coverage outside of some cities. And here, Verizon is far ahead of AT&T in building out their 4G LTE network:

http://www.verizonwireless.com/images_b2c/ipad/overlays/MapOverlay_att.jpg

However, if you're in one of the many areas where there's no 4G coverage, you fall back on 3G where AT&T is sometimes twice as fast as Verizon's 3G (but not always, since AT&T doesn't have HSPA+ everywhere). Both carriers are continuing to add more 4G coverage.

everything else is secondary (Lee626), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

and by 4G we mean LTE which still isn't true 4G

mh, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

There's no true 4G yet (as you no doubt know), but LTE as it now exists is vastly faster than any of the 3G technologies. How are they going to distinguish real 4G when it becomes available?

ba-zing

I do like Apple's equality on these things, though.

"I've always wanted to be the one that's on the edge of technological curve. I always wanted to be ahead of everybody else. The great Steve Jobs, rest in peace, when the iPhone was first coming out, I used to call him every other day. Can I please get one first? Can I please get one first? He never gave me one. He said, 'Shaq, I can't, I can't, I can't.' He was a great guy."

Sparrow for iPhone has been released, seems pretty cool so far. A lot like the desktop version only with the slide left/right navigation that apps seem to find hip these days

iPad came. All I can guarantee right now is that it comes in a box.

screen is fucking amazing

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 04:59 (twelve years ago) link

if you hold it close enough to your face you can only just discern pixels, but in ordinary use you would never do that

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 05:00 (twelve years ago) link

weight and thickness almost indiscernible btw, you really have to be working hard in order to see or feel the difference

markers i can't run a wall-bounce test until icloud backup is restored (50 mins remaining)

- 90% to 0% battery in just under six hours, with screen constantly on at 100% brightness, downloading ~20 GB of apps and doing some moderate gfx
- pdfs look incredible
- new yorker looks like shit

i'm starting to think that the billions and billions of 72ppi images out there on the web are going to have to be replaced, one by one

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:11 (twelve years ago) link

i mean either that or all the images out there are going to look really, really small

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:17 (twelve years ago) link

put that way, are web designers actually keeping everything at 72 but just making all their images larger?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:18 (twelve years ago) link

surely the browser engine scales things up appropriately? or does it really honor pixel measurements and make all web pages 1/4 of the size? that would be nuts.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:27 (twelve years ago) link

well i don't really know, but an image on a 264ppi screen will be half the apparent size as the same image on a 132ppi screen, right?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:45 (twelve years ago) link

you would think, but then the same would happen to text specified in pixels - not uncommon practice in css - which would render it unreadable. so i would guess (oh for an ipad 3 of my own) that apple must scale things up to some theoretical non-minuscule 'pixel' size which is bigger than an actual pixel? idk. it's complicated.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:54 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i would imagine there would be a hard lower bound of say 7pt effective size. web designers have had like a decade to use ems at this point though.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 12:04 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but when images are in pixels it's understandable that they still get used as a universal measure. What do you do when you want text and images to match up? Somewhere I can hear the tinny voice of a web designer screaming "THE WEB IS NOT PRINT!" but looking at many sites these days you could easily be fooled; I think that voice is getting quieter and quieter.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 12:11 (twelve years ago) link

i honestly don't know! i've been away from the coalface too long.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

same here tbh.
