I will not get to experience the wonder till next week. How dare my wife get me a present but wait too long to get the first batch!

EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

dope present imo

markers, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:32 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, she's the bomb.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

So apparently there's no way to get iPhoto albums on your iPad without syncing all your apps to the Mac as well. I tried doing it without syncing apps and it fucking deleted all my apps. SO angry right now

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

Give us the best screen in the universe and NO WAY to get our photos on there, good one Apple you divs

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

i think you're supposed to grab an iphone w/ ios 5 installed & then bring up each individual picture on your mac's screen, take a picture of it, then wait for it to go up into icloud and once you've done this for all your pictures you can put them into albums on yr ipad

markers, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

that's ridiculous

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

No help on Google at all, it's like the fanboys just suck it up

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

nobody knows what you're talking about

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 16 March 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

If you want to put iPhoto albums on your iPad, you can only do it through iTunes, and iTunes either transfers all your iOS apps to your Mac (wtfffff) or deletes all your apps off your iPad. I bought the PhotoSync app which does the simple thing that Apple is apparently too thick to implement.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

who cares if yr apps are synced to yr Mac tho? Why is that a problem?

Clay, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

Because (a) they don't do anything on a Mac (b) I don't have enough drive space for 13 GB of apps

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

I just want to put my photos on my iPad, that's all

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

latest iPhoto should support photostream, right?

dan selzer, Saturday, 17 March 2012 00:34 (twelve years ago) link

mac version? yes. i'd assume the new ios version does too

markers, Saturday, 17 March 2012 02:08 (twelve years ago) link

This display, it is nice.

Jeff, Saturday, 17 March 2012 02:08 (twelve years ago) link

xpost eh not sure about the ios version tbh

markers, Saturday, 17 March 2012 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

but we have iphoto for the mac here and photo stream is built into it iirc

markers, Saturday, 17 March 2012 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

O damn. Flipboard kind of justifies the existence of the iPad.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 17 March 2012 05:35 (twelve years ago) link

Readability is a+, kind of see myself ditching Instapaper for now.

mh, Saturday, 17 March 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link

I am seriously going to have to slap Mark Daisey. He comes across so badly, as such a weasel on the TAL interviews. He keeps answering very direct "did this happen?" questions with answers like "I stand by truth of my story in the theatrical sense."

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Saturday, 17 March 2012 17:44 (twelve years ago) link

flipboard is so great

Photostream is close but it's not what I'm after. I want old holiday albums on the iPad. Anyway, the PhotoSync app does the job.

Autumn Almanac, Saturday, 17 March 2012 21:25 (twelve years ago) link

xxpost we heard it in the car this morning and were loling; Daisey came off so badly. And YES all of his answers were longwinded bullshitty non-answers.
But the overall tone, and Glass's approach reminded me of being a kid:
'Why did you steal that?'
*silence*
'Well? Are you going to tell me?'
'I don't know...'
''I don't know' is not an answer. I'm going to sit here until you give me an answer'
*cries*

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 17 March 2012 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

I get his theater thing, but he completely fucked this up in so many ways by interfacing with a journalism program. On stage, he can claim artistic license or say it's a pastiche or whatever, but he completely failed to say that! And presented things as facts on a factual show! He kind of makes me feel angry for every person I know in the dramatic arts because he's so utterly fucked what he does, and sank a valid journalistic angle at the same time.

I feel bad, but I kind of hope someone does pursue him because the journalism/"truth" line he has blurred is objectively no better than what Fox News does!

mh, Sunday, 18 March 2012 04:57 (twelve years ago) link

I agree. I find his cowardice/naivete kind of loathsome, tbqh.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 18 March 2012 05:01 (twelve years ago) link

so, i want to stream music from itunes wirelessly to my stereo

which airport express do i need?

do i need the g / draft-N version? is there any difference between a late 2008 model with g/N and a newer model from 2009, 2010, 2011 or 2012? do all versions have optical out? does the optical out break easily like the one on the old santa rosa macbook pro?

the late great, Sunday, 18 March 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

They all have optical out. I have the very first model and it's still functional, although occasionally glitchy and you have to install the older version of the utility to tweak it -- which isn't a big deal, because Apple basically is maintaining both pieces of software: the new one as a more user-friendly one based on the iOS GUI, and the old one as a more feature-rich one.

That said, pretty much any one you'd find will be newer. If I can get the oldest one to still work, they'd probably all be fine. I've never hooked mine up with optical out, but it uses the mini-jack version and should be functional.

On a random note: if you don't need the USB port for a printer or have a need to extend your wireless network (or set one up), I'd recommend getting an Apple TV instead! Pretty much exact same functionality -- streaming to it for airplay audio doesn't require a display -- and it's getting software updates. It's priced the same as an Airport Express, and you can probably get a used one now that the 1080p ones are out.

mh, Sunday, 18 March 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

any reason i get an apple tv instead if i don't have a tv?

the late great, Sunday, 18 March 2012 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

i mean i guess i could get a tv if i got an apple tv ... but then i'd want to wait and get an actual apple tv once those come out next year

the late great, Sunday, 18 March 2012 22:58 (twelve years ago) link

late great i have used airport express for streaming for like 4-5 years now and it has been a half-decade of heartache and frustration :(

if you have any interference in your house or your router is far from your computer you may experience the same.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:00 (twelve years ago) link

Meh, not really, I guess. It seems like more of an audio device to me than the airport express, but it's pretty much a wash if you'll never connect a screen.

mh, Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

hmm well i would be within 20 feet of the express at any given time and it would either be line-of-sight or through one wall

also the extreme would be like 10 feet away from the express, on the other side of a thin interior wall

does that sound okay?

the late great, Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:09 (twelve years ago) link

i am picking up like ten different wireless networks right now though

the late great, Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:09 (twelve years ago) link

its possible, i spent so much time figuring out solutions to this shit and sometimes it just seems random. is there a wireless phone or a microwave in your house or nearby? those seemed to be trouble. i used to hear my neighbour's phone ring through the wall and as soon as she picked up the sound would cut out.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:11 (twelve years ago) link

I think the new ones are better than the old. If you're in the 2.4GHz spectrum, then microwaves and cordless phones will hound you! I think it you have all N equipment and use the 5GHz range it's better.

cash call

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:26 (twelve years ago) link

the wireless network my dad set up inside his house involves an airport extreme and two airports express being used as 'extenders' -- if you pick up a signal from one of the extenders instead of from the airport extreme (which you will if you're closer to an express, even if there's still a strong signal from the extreme) there are really noticeable and annoying speed differences

max, Monday, 19 March 2012 11:39 (twelve years ago) link

extenders halve the available bandwidth by the way they work, iirc

stet, Monday, 19 March 2012 12:06 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, that sounds about right. i dont know if its possible to turn off the "extending" capability of the express, but if it is, you should

max, Monday, 19 March 2012 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, you can. The way I've always used it is as a client on the network.

mh, Monday, 19 March 2012 13:09 (twelve years ago) link

tHe NeW iPaD is truly amazing but every old low-res app looks like arse. Reading text in newsstand and newsstand-alike apps is giving me the shits.

nhex-ane (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 March 2012 22:50 (twelve years ago) link

The ones that used high-res images look good! I have The Wire, NYTimes, and (lol) The Daily in Newsstand and they all look OK.

Readability is good, as is flipboard

mh, Monday, 19 March 2012 22:59 (twelve years ago) link

i saw a new one today and it was sharp and had good contrast but it didn't really seem like a game changer

in fact i didn't really see a difference except when we were looking at enlarged 1080p photos

the late great, Monday, 19 March 2012 23:42 (twelve years ago) link

I use Zing in iPad bc I care a lot more about handy quote and formatting buttons than I do about looks. Good thing bc it looks like utter crap.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Monday, 19 March 2012 23:57 (twelve years ago) link

Biggest difference is in text, for me. I could never comfortably read a website or article on the old iPads, but the new one is fantastic.
