The non-game retina apps aren't really that big. And even the big game ones can be re-downloaded. The vast majority of usage on my phone is music, which I'm not really going to keep on the iPad. 32GB isn't really large enough for a movie library so I'll probably just watch and delete if I'm flying or whatever.

I just feel like going over $500 for one of these things is getting into a more serious price-point and then I should be thinking about a macbook air or whatever.

Swap it now for an Air while you still can. What's the window? 14 days?

TURPS-DEFCON1.jpg (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 21:13 (twelve years ago) link

Upgraded from a first gen ipad to the new one. I was at a construction site visit today and pulling up photos and websites in the field over the LTE connection was crazy fast.

Most amazing finding there re battery life etc. is the iPads' power consumption at maximum brightness – 2nd gen 2.7 W v 3rd gen 7 W. The retina iPad is smashing more light through the higher-density display to achieve the same effective brightness.

xxpost, yeah 14 days. Air is tough for me to design on, have a 13" MBP which is great. Just wanted the iPad at home to save my eyes from constant iPhone-ing.

ipad is a great kitchen device imo

laptop takes up too much space on counter

otm, the epicurious ipad app is great

The best iPad apps are ones that wouldn't be that great on a laptop, imo

mh, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

iPad is still my favorite device for reading stuff on the web, even without the new display. I rarely browse web on my laptop now unless I am context-switching from work or chat or just want a keyboard.

Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

i think the iPad makes more sense to me as i've gotten less and less enchanted w/ my laptop

laptops are awesome in college when you're highly mobile, don't have a lot of space and still think its possible to work productively in a cafe

as an adult, i now w

well i meant to erase that and say

now that i'm done w/ college, i get laptops from my bosses and if i need to do work stuff i do it on that

i do some hobbyist stuff w/ illustrator and indesign too, but given the choice I'd much rather do that on an iMac at a desk w/ a nice big display. ditto gaming.

if I want to check mail, read ebooks or magazines, look at webpages, etc then i'd rather do it with something simpler than a laptop

the only thing I need a laptop for is digital dj'ing

the late great, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:27 (twelve years ago) link

like i guess what i'm getting at is that i no longer want an all-in-one solution, i want boundaries between work and fun, and even then i want boundaries between different types of work and fun

the late great, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

tabbed browsing on laptop >>>>> the same on ipad

individual webpage browsing (eg reading the paper) is better on ipad tho

tabbed browsing = black hole of time wasting

the late great, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:35 (twelve years ago) link

I still use my PC for online shopping and general research, and long emails because honestly fuck typing on an ipad

ipad good for ilxing during football games :D

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

I do design work on an iMac 27", but sometimes I have to do smaller things away from home and I still can't do that on the iPad. That's why it's still more of a toy (and why I have a problem spending $$$$ for it). That said, I'll give it a chance. I'm sure I'll like it more when I get a proper case and I'm not baby-ing it.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

I still feel like it's more of a 'I'm too lazy to get up and go to the computer' device for me than anything. I don't use it half as much as I feel I should, given the $$

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago) link

Babying electronic devices is a great way to not get any use out of them imo

Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago) link

Portability. The iPad goes everywhere, and I keep a wireless keyboard at work.

iOS DJ. Wave of the future! Djay on iPhone is pretty awesome. For what it is.

Is there a good Word-compatible word processing app for iPad? Preferably free.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 00:35 (twelve years ago) link

Not really. Most obvious is Pages, which is Apple's own, costs US$10 and opens & saves .doc files. There's also stuff like QuickOffice.

TURPS-DEFCON1.jpg (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 00:41 (twelve years ago) link

OK. $10 might be do-able if I wind up needing it. Maybe I can get work to pay for it.

Definitely a school-expense tax write off.

oops, out of place hypen

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 00:43 (twelve years ago) link

Biggest problem is that you can't test iOS Pages to see whether it'll do what you need. It's pretty average as word processors go.

i'd love it if I could do legitimate web development on something like an ipad. I have feeling they are speedier and less of a pain in the ass than my laptop has become (slowness caused by firefox and flash, i think). I still don't have an ipad but getting one is starting to feel like an inevitability.

akm, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 02:33 (twelve years ago) link

I used to write in a sort of journal or diary every day, but I haven't done so in ages, partly b/c I've abandoned pen and paper and b/c I'm never around a keyboard when I want to write (also b/c ILX and FB bleed off my potential posts). But I've tapped out a couple things on my iPad that seem like blog/journal stuff. I hope it's a catalyst for more personal writing b/c I don't like existing w/out documentation.

Draw Something is literally the only computer game I've ever been interested in.

Except You Don't Know Jack. That was good for a while, but when I started living alone I dropped it.

seems like 3rd gen ipad is getting positioned as the moment when apple hopes to leap that gap and take the device from a consumption vehicle to a creation vehicle. they spent a lot of time during the launch event talking about photo and video editing, and the ability to do high quality art like this:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/edwardiii/phptkErEpDSC_1300.jpg

still not the greatest for long writing jags but a wireless keyboard goes a long way towards offsetting that issue, I'm a big fan of the combo case/keyboard thingys.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

and with their control of the component supply chain and the massive amounts of cash they can pour into R&D (prolly more than any other company on earth at this point), apple will be able to make massive processing power and storage breakthroughs in the next few years. if they don't miserably fuck everything up w/o jobs around to mind the shop.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:39 (twelve years ago) link

They haven't really done the storage work themselves! The processing power thing is now in their court since they've absorbed a lot of the ARM development groups, but as far as displays, storage, and battery technology go they're either buying up the entire stocks of the best-of-breed stuff or are pushing external companies to produce to their specs.

mh, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

that's kinda what I mean by control of the supply chain - obv they don't own all the pieces but they are the vendor to whom a lot of suppliers are now beholden

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

i think the consumption/creation argument is just... who cares. most people use their 'regular' computers for the same kind of 'consumption' anyway

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:55 (twelve years ago) link

^troo, tho if you're not interested in talking about how much current and future ipads will be able to eat into laptop usage in a play for device dominance then you might be in the wrong thread

also my new ipad has been delivered and is somewhere in the building *anticipates*
