Biggest problem is that you can't test iOS Pages to see whether it'll do what you need. It's pretty average as word processors go.

Google Docs was arse on an iPad last time I used it

i'd love it if I could do legitimate web development on something like an ipad. I have feeling they are speedier and less of a pain in the ass than my laptop has become (slowness caused by firefox and flash, i think). I still don't have an ipad but getting one is starting to feel like an inevitability.

akm, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 02:33 (twelve years ago) link

I used to write in a sort of journal or diary every day, but I haven't done so in ages, partly b/c I've abandoned pen and paper and b/c I'm never around a keyboard when I want to write (also b/c ILX and FB bleed off my potential posts). But I've tapped out a couple things on my iPad that seem like blog/journal stuff. I hope it's a catalyst for more personal writing b/c I don't like existing w/out documentation.

an iPad is more of a "consumption" device than a "creation" device imo

Draw Something is literally the only computer game I've ever been interested in.

Except You Don't Know Jack. That was good for a while, but when I started living alone I dropped it.

seems like 3rd gen ipad is getting positioned as the moment when apple hopes to leap that gap and take the device from a consumption vehicle to a creation vehicle. they spent a lot of time during the launch event talking about photo and video editing, and the ability to do high quality art like this:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/edwardiii/phptkErEpDSC_1300.jpg

still not the greatest for long writing jags but a wireless keyboard goes a long way towards offsetting that issue, I'm a big fan of the combo case/keyboard thingys.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

and with their control of the component supply chain and the massive amounts of cash they can pour into R&D (prolly more than any other company on earth at this point), apple will be able to make massive processing power and storage breakthroughs in the next few years. if they don't miserably fuck everything up w/o jobs around to mind the shop.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:39 (twelve years ago) link

They haven't really done the storage work themselves! The processing power thing is now in their court since they've absorbed a lot of the ARM development groups, but as far as displays, storage, and battery technology go they're either buying up the entire stocks of the best-of-breed stuff or are pushing external companies to produce to their specs.

mh, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

that's kinda what I mean by control of the supply chain - obv they don't own all the pieces but they are the vendor to whom a lot of suppliers are now beholden

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

i think the consumption/creation argument is just... who cares. most people use their 'regular' computers for the same kind of 'consumption' anyway

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 14:55 (twelve years ago) link

^troo, tho if you're not interested in talking about how much current and future ipads will be able to eat into laptop usage in a play for device dominance then you might be in the wrong thread

also my new ipad has been delivered and is somewhere in the building *anticipates*

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 15:00 (twelve years ago) link

why did they hide it??

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 15:00 (twelve years ago) link

it's a big building and the package must wend its way through a complex series of causeways checkpoints and delivery tubes fyi I work in the matrix

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

I think the whole creation/consumption thing is bullshit because the argument is basically "I can't create the same things I could create on my laptop" which of course you can't, it's a different sort of thing. I am not going to be creating candid snapshots with my laptop, but I would with my iPhone.

I was watching an old school star trek episode a couple weeks ago and noticed one of the engineers had a touchpad device similar to ipad, wonder if jobs saw it as a kid and just got stuck on building one for himself

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

it's been pretty acknowledged that the fake tech of star trek has inspired a lot of real stuff, design interfaces, cell phones... transparent aluminum... well, maybe not that one, that was just a coincidence

2001 notably has the same sort of thing going on, I think?

There's an entertaining correlation between late 80s/early 90s work at Xerox PARC that involved devices called tabs, pads, and boards. The pad was 9"x11", the tab was 2"x3", and the board was pretty much a whiteboard. The idea was that with ubiquitous computing, you'd have a variety of devices that would serve different roles.

I've found myself context switching if I have an iPad and iPhone handy. If I'm watching something on the iPad, I'll check email on my phone. If I'm checking my calendar, I'll pull out my phone but if I'm planning multiple events I'll walk over to my computer or pull out my iPad.

star trek was a documentary beamed back to the 60s to ensure creation of the ipad

finally somebody is making sense in this thread

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 15:38 (twelve years ago) link

see that is what I was saying

mh, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think it's a bullshit thing at all

i'm just saying that i don't think of a computer, a tablet and a smartphone as different ways to accomplish the same core functions ... i think a laptop computer and a desktop computer share the same core functions, but a phone and a tablet are fundamentally different from the first two

i think a lot of the "mobile" functions of a laptop (ie surfing the web at the coffee shop or checking your email in the airport) are pretty well handled by a smartphone or tablet at this point

the late great, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

ya i agree with that for sure, i just dont think the line is between 'creating' and 'consuming' necc

popping in with a couple of qs...

i am trying to decide between buying an ipad 2 16gb refurb model (i'm guessing ex-display) and a new ipad. the refurb is €349, price for the new one hasn't been released yet (i'm in Ireland) but i'm guessing will be around €500. i'm poorish but in the mood to splash out (just got made full-time at my job for the next year, having spent the last year working half-time). i'm leaning towards the refurb, what do you folks reckon?

second q is re those combined keyb/covers that Edward mentioned upthread, any specific recommendations?

thanks folks

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

I got a refurbished ipad 2 16gb fairly recently and I dig it, I dunno if I have any advice w/r/t the difference between the two.

after a lot of price/spec research I got this to go with it:
http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-IMP39B-Bluetooth-adjustable/dp/B0050M92CU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332354181&sr=8-1 and think it does the job quite well for the price.

second q is re those combined keyb/covers that Edward mentioned upthread, any specific recommendations?

having tried a number of these, my favorite is the targus versavu, but it doesn't look like the keyboard model is available in the UK based on a cursory search of amazon.co.uk.

second best is the zaggmate, tho there may be a preferable local alternative.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

I think I've made a thing of this before but I use my iPad loads at work, to whit:

- planning work with a mindmapping thingo
- screen mockups with my client sitting next to me
- taking notes when collecting information from chatterbox clients (wireless kb => no need for full laptop)
- draggy flowcharts
- annotating other people's work and emailing it back to them (had to do this urgently a few weeks ago; it was a Friday night on the tram, paper would not have cut it)

Also Chinese study (writing characters on a tablet >>>>>>> scrawling with a mouse or digitiser wotsit).

ymmv but fuck me if this isn't the most useful, portable and productive laptop I've ever owned.
