This is my time to shine.

Light reflecting off the sweat, amirite?

dan m, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

And I actually don't think this is too bad at all, it just gives me the willies that it's happening in March.

dan m, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

Jesse, I definitely did not like the heat of NC (I remember one notable birthday of mine when it was in the 80s and I was just super depressed about it) but everything was airconditioned thoroughly and we all drove cars so it didn't seem as bad.

I'd whine less of we had the window unit running in the bedroom, but it's locked in a shed and it's supposed to cool off this weekend so, hot sweaty sleep it is.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:14 (twelve years ago) link

thank god that xp allowed me to not make a joke about willies

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:14 (twelve years ago) link

Ha - I thought "beware the willies of march," but it's not that great a joke.

but everything was airconditioned thoroughly and we all drove cars so it didn't seem as bad.

That is important. That's why I say that living in New Orleans from May-November was easier for me than spending a summer here. Mostly because we walk so much here.

willies of March combined with jizz trees... I'm stopping right there

dan m, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

BTW guys -- this is a dogwood (I don't think this is the same tree you guys claim smells like crotch)

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

Are the crotch trees also the jizz trees? I always wanted to smell the jizz trees but now I never will. :(

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:27 (twelve years ago) link

I have never identified the smell of a plant as either of those things, so I have no idea.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

God, know what is the best smell?! BASIL.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

There are many dogwood trees from the train station to my house. I don't know if these smell like crotch, but I strongly dislike the way they smell.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

One of my favorite commutes ever was a 15 min walk past tons and tons of jasmine and gardenia plants. It was dreamy.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

That sounds nice. One of the places we lived when I was growing up had a yard full of lily of the valley. And honey suckle is always going to smell like my elementary school's playground in summer (we would walk there to hang out when school was out).

carl agatha, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

I would just like to say that the dogwood trees down south are so freaking beautiful right now. In a week they'll be invisible again.

I took a side street home from the bus stop yesterday and the entire street and a lot of the cross streets were lined with dogwoods, forsythia bushes, and some beautiful tree w/ flowers that look like magnolia but aren't, I think. What an amazing time of year.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

Spring is the best.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

I'm glad I don't have any problems with spring pollen (knock dogwood).

any major prude will tell you (WmC), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

if you don't smell the jizz on the breeze....

Cummer breeze/Makes me feel fine

cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

I demand a tree that smells like a pretty girl after you've been having sex for an hour and then ordered pizza and are sitting naked on the bed together eating it.

cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

THAT'S spring, yo.

cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

What if the girl is kinda homely but super nice?

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

What if you are eating bowls of dry Crispix?

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

xp Define "nice".

cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

If "nice" = "a total freak in bed," she's guaranteed by Marxist science to smell even better.

I flinch, I shy, when the lass with the delicate air goes by
I smile, I grin, when the gal with a touch of sin walks in.
I hope, and I pray, for a Hester to win just one more "A"
The sadder-but-wiser girl's the girl for me.

I wasn't trying to encourage you.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

I always liked those biggest-sweet-potato-in-the-world trees.

any major prude will tell you (WmC), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

I wasn't trying to encourage you.

That's what she said. And I said, "But it's spring!"

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

We met at a chicago beer tweet-up. Sounds so lame, but there was a lot of free beer. It was at Half Acre!

The KFW show was good. It was basically in two parts... the recording of the 80 channel thing he did in Paris (played in 4-channel of course) and then he played around with his electronic box thing he has at most of the shows I have been to.

I personally prefer more of his drone-y stuff, so the first part was quite good. The second part was more IDM-y if you will. But I can not complain, it was free!

t0dd sw1ss, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 20:36 (twelve years ago) link

While I was eating lunch this fairly attractive college-aged guy was making jokes about "fingering chicks" and drinking beer and he was surrounded by a bevy of girls laughing really, really hard and telling him how "hilarious" he is, but it was kinda obvious it was because they all found him hot. I wanted to walk by and shout, "DON'T TELL HIM HE'S FUNNY, THAT ONLY ENCOURAGES HIM AND THATS HOW WE GET DANE COOK".

i listened to the radiolab on patient zero ... pretty good! not crazy about the narration and editing/production but most of the stories were interesting (the cowboy hat thing was dumb but the rest were good). i don't really get why it's a distinct thing from This American Life, it seems exactly the same.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

Radiolab is supposed to be science-oriented, and their topics aren't necessarily in keeping with news and current events. Also sometimes TAL does fiction segments and Radiolab doesn't do that.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

"DON'T TELL HIM HE'S FUNNY, THAT ONLY ENCOURAGES HIM AND THATS HOW WE GET DANE COOK".

Audible LOL at this, btw.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

Haha

Man, Radiolab's editing makes me want to throw the radio against the wall.

I listened to the Patient Zero ep. and I was very surprised that their account of how he got to be called that was not just wrong (per the common knowledge debunking of the notion that he was called that b/c he was the equivalent of "Ground Zero") but also one I'd never heard before. They said that patients were randomly assigned numbers and he just happened to be assigned 0. It totally called into question everything else they said.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

they didn't say they were randomly assigned numbers, my impression was that they called him patient zero because when they tracked everything back he appeared to be the starting place. but they didn't really say that either.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

Are you sure they didn't say they were randomly assigned numbers? It's pretty fresh in my mind grapes....

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

but i also don't really know what the "right reason" is you're implying. i don't know much about it at all.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

I've never listened to Radiolab before, but that one sounds like a decent place to start.

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

they were unclear about the number assignments - they might have suggested the numbers were random (at least for the non-patient zeros) but i don't think they said it straight-out - anyway it would be a pretty big coincidence for the first guy to just happen to be patient zero so i think that choice in particular was non-random

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link

The last radiolab I listened to was something on why people do endurance events.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link

i haven't heard the radiolab episode, but afaik the whole "patient zero" thing, at least as regards gaetan dugas, has been widely critiqued/debunked as inaccurate and somewhat homophobic. maybe the radiolab episode deals with this

1staethyr, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:57 (twelve years ago) link

wikipedia says 'He was called "Patient Zero" because at least 40 of the 248 people known to be infected by AIDS in 1983 had had sexual intercourse with him, or with someone who had sexual intercourse with him.'
