We met at a chicago beer tweet-up. Sounds so lame, but there was a lot of free beer. It was at Half Acre!
The KFW show was good. It was basically in two parts... the recording of the 80 channel thing he did in Paris (played in 4-channel of course) and then he played around with his electronic box thing he has at most of the shows I have been to.
I personally prefer more of his drone-y stuff, so the first part was quite good. The second part was more IDM-y if you will. But I can not complain, it was free!

While I was eating lunch this fairly attractive college-aged guy was making jokes about "fingering chicks" and drinking beer and he was surrounded by a bevy of girls laughing really, really hard and telling him how "hilarious" he is, but it was kinda obvious it was because they all found him hot. I wanted to walk by and shout, "DON'T TELL HIM HE'S FUNNY, THAT ONLY ENCOURAGES HIM AND THATS HOW WE GET DANE COOK".

i listened to the radiolab on patient zero ... pretty good! not crazy about the narration and editing/production but most of the stories were interesting (the cowboy hat thing was dumb but the rest were good). i don't really get why it's a distinct thing from This American Life, it seems exactly the same.
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:38 (twelve years ago) link
Radiolab is supposed to be science-oriented, and their topics aren't necessarily in keeping with news and current events. Also sometimes TAL does fiction segments and Radiolab doesn't do that.

"DON'T TELL HIM HE'S FUNNY, THAT ONLY ENCOURAGES HIM AND THATS HOW WE GET DANE COOK".
Audible LOL at this, btw.
Haha
Man, Radiolab's editing makes me want to throw the radio against the wall.
I listened to the Patient Zero ep. and I was very surprised that their account of how he got to be called that was not just wrong (per the common knowledge debunking of the notion that he was called that b/c he was the equivalent of "Ground Zero") but also one I'd never heard before. They said that patients were randomly assigned numbers and he just happened to be assigned 0. It totally called into question everything else they said.
― free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago) link
they didn't say they were randomly assigned numbers, my impression was that they called him patient zero because when they tracked everything back he appeared to be the starting place. but they didn't really say that either.
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link
Are you sure they didn't say they were randomly assigned numbers? It's pretty fresh in my mind grapes....
― free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link
but i also don't really know what the "right reason" is you're implying. i don't know much about it at all.
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link
I've never listened to Radiolab before, but that one sounds like a decent place to start.
― stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link
they were unclear about the number assignments - they might have suggested the numbers were random (at least for the non-patient zeros) but i don't think they said it straight-out - anyway it would be a pretty big coincidence for the first guy to just happen to be patient zero so i think that choice in particular was non-random
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link
The last radiolab I listened to was something on why people do endurance events.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link
i haven't heard the radiolab episode, but afaik the whole "patient zero" thing, at least as regards gaetan dugas, has been widely critiqued/debunked as inaccurate and somewhat homophobic. maybe the radiolab episode deals with this
― 1staethyr, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:57 (twelve years ago) link
wikipedia says 'He was called "Patient Zero" because at least 40 of the 248 people known to be infected by AIDS in 1983 had had sexual intercourse with him, or with someone who had sexual intercourse with him.'
― 1staethyr, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:58 (twelve years ago) link
There has often been an allusion to a "patient zero" who introduced AIDS to the gay community of California. In fact, the patient was not called zero at all but was designated by the letter O (for Out of California) but the name patient zero persisted.
In 1984 Dr. William Darrow and colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) published the results of a study they had conducted in The American Journal of Medicine. This epidemiological study from San Francisco showed how 'Patient O' ("oh," the letter, for "Out of California") had given HIV to multiple partners.... The press mistakenly interpreted the designation as Patient 0 (i.e. zero) rather than O.
Randy Shilts wrote about this in And The Band Played On and it's pretty widely known.

Those were just two of a ton of references to this error.

Yeh, they appear to be from the same day.
I am playing it and they just said that the CDC created a diagram of who had sex w/ whom and numbered everyone "NY 7, LA 12" and Gaetan's number just *happened* to be numbered 0 "and as far as we know, that's the first time you get the term 'Patient Zero.'"
