I just smashed my ipad 2 with a hammer based on your 'insights', Edward.

NOW WHAT.

now that you're all thoroughly discounting whatever I say, I'll note that I'm not seeing too much quality difference between the ipad 2 and ipad 3 screenshots

however

ipad 2 = 968 KB
ipad 3 = 3.20 MB

this is the type of stuff that has the potential to affect 16GB users, unless you're sir cloud or something

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 23:39 (twelve years ago) link

flagging all of your posts from now on, fyi

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 23:41 (twelve years ago) link

Not seeing a diff in the iPads, or in the screenshots viewed on another device? You also have to realize you are scaling up the video on iPad 3 and scaling it down on iPad 2.

mh, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 23:44 (twelve years ago) link

That is, assuming you downloaded a 1080p one. If it's off YouTube, you are probbably viewing a lower res.

mh, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 23:44 (twelve years ago) link

Edward III is not to be trusted

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 23:49 (twelve years ago) link

lol

in the screenshots on a different device (to eliminate the display diff between the ipads)

the trailer was the same 1080 mp4 file loaded to both ipads, not youtube

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

I respect your testing methodology

mh, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 23:56 (twelve years ago) link

btw if you're viewing them on a diff device then it completely negates the fact we're talking about whether the iPad screen looks good, not whether it can render things to static files better than iPad 2, sheesh

mh, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 23:56 (twelve years ago) link

because I am insane I loaded the screenshots to both ipads, I can see a slight diff between the two (minor pixelation) if I zoom in on details (like on the thing that looks like an old pushmower on the left hand side of the capture)

and I'm not so much interested in the quality difference as in the potential for organic file bloat, just something to take into consideration if folks are trying to make the 16/32/64 decision

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 22 March 2012 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I'm sort of terrified to see the file size of the first retina new yorker

TURPS-DEFCON1.jpg (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 22 March 2012 00:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah... I appreciate that file sizes relative to terrible -> good -> great -> excellent quality pix is not an equal distribution, high quality chews up disk space disproportionately... I'm not sure if apple does tho. too early to tell really, but the next iteration of ipad might need to support 32/64/128 if something like a native screenshot is going to increase 3x going from ipad 2 -> ipad 3... and what that means for app developers....

but that's kinda why I got the 16GB... I'll be yr guinea pig thx

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 22 March 2012 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

thanks for the help ilxers, just ordered the refurb. woo hoo!

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Thursday, 22 March 2012 01:16 (twelve years ago) link

pdf rendering/drawing can be painfully slow, omfg

TURPS-DEFCON1.jpg (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 22 March 2012 03:33 (twelve years ago) link

my annotation app is completely up the shithole

TURPS-DEFCON1.jpg (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 22 March 2012 03:33 (twelve years ago) link

what were you using? been kinda wanting an annotation app, tho I guess if it's up the shithole the point is moot.

really pleased w/ battery life. not exactly nonstop use but have brought it to several hour+ meetings and done the odd netflixing (and screen capturing obv ha), still at 57% after two days.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 23 March 2012 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

So I'm going to have to buy a new laptop in the next month or two, and I was wondering if you guys know anything about the rumors that Apple might drop the cd/dvd drive from their laptop and make most of the the Air versions? Has any used a macbook air, what are the shortcomings? I can live without a dvd drive as long as I have plenty of storage. The processors seem smaller than the macbook pros and I'm wondering if they are slower? I'm wondering if they release a 15" macbook air will they increase the chips to quads and how will the price run?

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 04:00 (twelve years ago) link

I like the screen better, it's an old-style glossy screen rather than covered with a sheet of glass as Apple does with the MBPs.
No slower for most things than a MBP, but for design/photo/video work they're probably not as good.

If they drop the Superdrive from most MBPs, I'd expect the specs to remain similar to current MBPs, they'll just try to save some weight/thickness by going SSD and not having the SD.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 04:03 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I do miss those older screens.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 04:06 (twelve years ago) link

I'll mainly use my computer for ripping records and scanning, and I saw the air comes with two usb ports and a headphone jack, so that's all I need but I'm should I worry about cpu capacity or shortcomings?

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 04:11 (twelve years ago) link

I... don't think so? I've never really pushed laptops, except when I was using a 15" MBP as my main computer with Lightroom and everything.

All new Apples come with a Thunderbolt port, which would make putting ripped records on external drives much faster (you'd have to get TBolt drives, though).

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 04:14 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks, I dread buying a new computer in the next month and then in the summer apple releases new laptops. But I can't wait around...

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 04:23 (twelve years ago) link

The 13" is pretty neat for using on the couch or w/e, but it can actually be a bit awkward for typing because it's so light (the screen half seems to weigh more). Carrying in a bag for school/work and then at home, I'd probably prefer the MBP line overall. The added weight is negligible IMO.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 04:27 (twelve years ago) link

That's what I just had, but I lost it to coffee, my um forth mac to lose to liquids. I have no complaints aside from it getting hot on the bottom. Just thought I might try something new.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 04:30 (twelve years ago) link

i just migrated from a ~2yr old top of the line MBP to a new top of the line MBA. for "normal use" (web, video, even lightroom), the MBA probably feels faster (via SSD). i take it to/from work every day, and travel a lot, and the weight/size difference is really noticable.

for "serious use" (which for me is number crunching) the MBP is slightly faster, but it's not a deal breaker.

the consensus seems to be that the MBP and MBA lines are about to merge (and effectively all become airs), probably some time in the next couple of months: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook_Pro.

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 12:45 (twelve years ago) link

maybe they'll keep around the 17". feel like they must keep something with a mechanical (i.e. v large) hard drive

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 12:46 (twelve years ago) link

also fwiw the 15" MBP and the 13" MBA have the same display resolution, so you don't feel much more cramped on the A.

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 12:48 (twelve years ago) link

We have an 11" MBA and I love it, but it's nowhere near to being a main computer (typing at a 20" iMac).

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 13:05 (twelve years ago) link

i have a 13" air and it feels like everything a laptop should be

I want "getting the beachball" to be some kind of new sex slang

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:15 (twelve years ago) link

How much memory and hard disk space do you have in it? In my experience it's either low memory or low disk space that does that.

mh, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

sort of been happening to me too ever since i upgraded to lion :( i have 8gb of memory and over 100gb of hard disk space. also got a couple of what appeared to be kernel panics (screen blacked out and computer was unresponsive)

:(

I had weird crap like that and it ended up being a weird mouse driver I'd installed previously? Not sure, stuff like that always seems to be old kernel extensions that the new OS doesn't get along with.

mh, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

Didn't Michael Hutchence "get the beach ball" just before he croaked?
