i. i am starting to enjoy how much of a 'thing' the study-room shops are becoming, always as cold opens or immediately following the creditsii. but it makes for very slow/measured openings, which is ... maybe a mistake for a show perpetually on the verge of cancellationiii. although maybe just the 'welcome back you guys!!' stuff threw meiv. dean crawling was greatv. so was jeff hulking outvi. but being too proud of themselves to set the gag up properly really suckedvii. actually structurally the whole celebrities sequence was a little off, like they'd gone 'they'll all be dressed as celebrities! and then ... stuff happens!' viii. although i have no idea who french stewart is so maybe that was whyix. chevy still great

i like/don't like how they avoid idiot ball stuff with the 'who is being a caricature this week' schtick
― thomp, Saturday, 24 March 2012 12:01 (twelve years ago) link
I assume everyone caught that when Jeff was coming down on the side of the road, shirtless in his torn pants, they were playing the sad Hulk piano music?
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 24 March 2012 13:00 (twelve years ago) link
i did but only, i suspected, from having seen family guy (?) use that gag.
i did think the welcome back stuff was confusing. weren't they just already back?

Last week's episode was meant to be third in this season re-start, but they pushed it up because they felt it would be a bit more indicative of how the group dynamic works and it was a little more...normal.

Pre-WWII style cartoon of the Dean is maybe one of my favorite things from the whole series. If I were getting a tattoo (ever), I would consider using it.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 March 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link
I thought this one missed the mark quite a bit but the scene with the Dean was awesome, also Britte as Jacko. Think part of the reason Chang is less funny now is that he's just off to the side doing his own thing rather than interacting with the other characters, they haven't managed to make the security guard thing work with the rest of the cast, which is weird because it had immense comic potential.
Felt like this ep was just setting a load of stuff up for later on? All the in-episode graphics were a bit weird.
GEEKY LINE OF CONVERSATION THE WRITERS OBVIOUSLY WANT PEOPLE TO HAVE ON INTERNET FORUMS: The Abed in this timeline has never thought about or seen Evil Abed before, right? Are they *actually* doing Evil Troy & Evil Abed crossing over to destroy the good versions of themselves? Seeing Evil Abed is always a joy though.
― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 25 March 2012 17:44 (twelve years ago) link
He has a weird *feeling* while eating cereal w/ Troy in the same timeline time as the creation of ET&A and when Troy asks him about it he says its "nothing".
― Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 25 March 2012 18:09 (twelve years ago) link
If we ever see anyone else interact with Evil Troy, then we would know he and Evil Abed are real. But in theory, Evil Abed and Evil Troy both could still be a figment of Abed's imagination. Would be great if the show ended with a collision of parallel dimensions. Beats "it was all a dream."
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 March 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link
Sadly, I think the Law & Order ep will never live up to what I imagine: Detective Munch walking in to investigate the crime in Greendale; Troy and Abed recoiling in horror as they realise they're part of the Westphall universe and spending the episode trying to prove that this isn't the real Munch...

OH - great episode. The Britta-1984 romance plot was excellent.

Yeah, that's him.
Loved this week's Magnitude appearance, and this is definitely one of the better product placement workarounds I've seen.

The 'get my coat' exchange was the best.
I figured as much last week, but I feel much more certain at this point that pieces are being positioned in anticipation of a season(ish)-long story arc of some sort.

in some pre-season interviews Harmon talked a bit about watching the wire all summer and wondering if you could do big long arcs like that on a sitcom and that it was his goal to try, so yeah, probably.

He also said somewhere that serialization is a crutch.
Anyway, "Britta Unfiltered" "I get it!"

I dug this ep. I loved the sword noises and gunshots during the fight scene at the end
Watched the last two eps tonight:
We know that they can bridge universes b/c that's what happened in model U.N./Crisis Alert ep. Evil Abed showing up and Chang building his personal guard of 13-year-old jewish kids were nice little set-ups for the rest of the season. I enjoyed all the meta-Seacrest jokes, including the ones that chimed in with those Joel himself makes on The Soup. Also, nice Incredible Hulk tv-show ending ref at the end.
Curious to see if John Oliver makes an appearance at all.

Imma be completely honest with y'all: I thought the coat exchange was just a non-sequitur and pretty funny on that level. It didn't occur to me that there were layers, I guess because my mind isn't in the gutter.
― Brock Peuchk (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 March 2012 13:52 (twelve years ago) link
the best part of that whole exchange was the Dean's face as he looked from the dude to the coat rack and back

Thinking out loud: this was better than last week's, more like decent Simpsons as opposed to crap Simpsons, but I still feel like something has been lost. Like, it was clever that they did the whole 1984 thing but the 'corpo-humanoid student' idea just seemed kind of dumb and contrived to begin with. If it was supposed to be some kind of satirical comment on corporate power (?), it's too OTT and not pointed enough. If it's not, it's just ... trying too hard for a laugh? I dunno, something like the chicken fingers mafia worked because i) it actually illuminated things about the characters and their relationships ii) it was funny because I could totally imagine people being really desperate for the one edible thing in a college cafeteria. Same with e.g. Abed's stop-motion wonderland. I liked the 'Kim' thing though.
Btw, I only expect great things from Community because it delivered them so consistently in the first two seasons. If it really were just a simple sitcom with nothing to it beyond jokes, I don't think there would be such a long thread about it (any more than there would be for Modern Family or Big Bang Theory).

we're really not getting enough meta ilx laughs out of the fact that the fast food chain Subway is a sinister force in recent episodes of "Community"
